Save the ZIP file and open it to access the text data. If you cannot find it, check your Downloads folder or search your device for the downloaded filename.

Ancestry’s standard guide describes a dated ZIP file, while its account-data download instructions describe a file named AncestryDNA.txt. The filename or route may differ by account interface, so follow the current download page and the email rather than relying on one expected name. Who can download a test’s data?
The test owner and a manager designated by the owner can download its DNA data. A DNA match or someone invited only to view the test cannot. You also cannot download data for a test you neither own nor manage.
What the downloaded file contains
The standard export is machine-readable genetic data, not your ethnicity estimate, DNA match list, or a narrative report. Ancestry describes the text file’s fields as an rsID (Reference SNP cluster ID), chromosome, position, and genotype. Genotypes are reported on the genomic forward strand, and standard SNPs are referenced to the GRCh37 human reference genome. Some chromosome labels may appear as 23 and 24 for X and Y.
Ancestry says DNA match lists cannot currently be downloaded or exported. The standard DNA-data download is also distinct from a broader account-data export, which can include account, billing, device, and communication records. Ancestry’s account-data guide says the DNA portion may include data, a registration code, registration date, and DNA purchase date.

Standard text data or an NGS VCF?
Some customers whose samples were analyzed with next-generation sequencing (NGS) may see a separate VCF download option. It is not a replacement that every test owner can choose; availability depends on the sample.

The link has expired or was already used: Start a new download request from DNA Settings and use the new email link.

The file will not download: Ancestry recommends clearing your browser’s cache and cookies and checking that your device has enough available memory.

You cannot see the download option: Confirm that you are signed in as the test owner or an authorized manager and have selected the correct test.

Protect the downloaded genetic data
The download creates a copy outside Ancestry’s security protections. Keep it somewhere you control and consider who can access the device or storage location where you save it.
Uploading the file to another service is optional. Before sharing it, Ancestry recommends checking whether the service has a privacy policy, independent ethical-review oversight, a way to delete your data, and a password-protected website using SSL. A raw genotype file is not a medical report; do not use it by itself to draw medical or legal conclusions.
