To delete a page with content in Microsoft Word, select the page’s contents and press Delete. To remove a blank page, first show formatting marks and identify what is creating it: a manual page break, a section break, pagination settings, or Word’s required final paragraph mark. The right fix depends on the cause, especially when section formatting is involved.
Delete a page that contains content
Word does not treat a page as a separate object to remove; delete the content that occupies it. Microsoft documents a Go To shortcut that selects the current page’s content in Word for Microsoft 365 and listed desktop releases from Word 2016 through Word 2024 on Windows and Mac. Microsoft’s page-deletion instructions describe the selection method.

- Click or tap anywhere on the page you want to remove.
- On Windows, press Ctrl+G. On Mac, press Option+Command+G.
- In the page-number box, type
page, then press Enter. - Close the Go To dialog. Check that the page’s content is selected, then press Delete.
You can also select the text, images, and other content on the page directly and press Delete. If a page remains, inspect the nearby page for a break or paragraph mark that is keeping it in the layout.
Find the cause of a blank page
A blank page is often created by formatting that is not visible in the normal document view. Turn on formatting marks to reveal paragraph marks and breaks: press Ctrl+Shift+8 on Windows or Command+8 on Mac. Microsoft’s blank-page guidance and formatting-mark instructions cover the common causes.
#1 Best Overall
Manual page break
A manual page break appears as a labeled break when formatting marks are on. Select that break and press Delete. This removes the forced page start, allowing the following content to move up.
Automatic page break
Word creates automatic page breaks as text flows onto the next page; they are not removable objects. Microsoft states, “You can’t remove automatic page breaks, but you can adjust where they occur.” Review the affected paragraph’s pagination settings, such as Keep with next, Keep lines together, and Widow/Orphan control, and adjust the setting causing the content to move. See Microsoft’s page-break instructions.

Required paragraph at the end of the document
Word requires a final paragraph mark, so it cannot simply be deleted. If it has been pushed onto an extra page, select the final paragraph mark and set its font size to 1 point so it fits on the preceding page. If that is not enough, Microsoft suggests reducing the bottom margin. When the final paragraph has a square bullet, check whether Page break before is enabled.

Section break
Next Page, Odd Page, and Even Page section breaks can create an apparently empty page. If the break is at the end of the document, placing the cursor directly before it and pressing Delete can remove it. In the middle of a document, use caution: deleting a section break merges the sections, and the merged section takes its formatting from the section that followed the break. If you need to keep separate section formatting, consider changing the break type to Continuous instead. Microsoft explains the layout effects in its section-break instructions and section-break options.

Locate a page before editing
In Word for Windows, open the Navigation Pane with Ctrl+F or select View > Navigation Pane. Choose Pages and click the page thumbnail to move to it. Microsoft notes that Navigation Pane behavior differs in Word for Mac and Word for the web, so the same controls may not be available there. See Microsoft’s Navigation Pane guidance.

The core distinction still applies: remove content to delete a filled page, and identify the cause of a blank one. For a manually inserted page break in Editing View, select the break and press Backspace. Microsoft’s cited page-break guidance also covers Word for the web. Desktop keyboard shortcuts and menu paths may differ between versions and platforms.
