A self-destruct password can mean two very different things: a phone may react to repeated incorrect lock-screen entries, or an owner may deliberately enter a special duress credential to erase the device. The Galaxy Note experience described in the headline does not identify a model or software version, so it cannot establish which Samsung behavior occurred. GrapheneOS documents its duress credential as the second kind: an intentionally entered PIN or password that irreversibly wipes the device.
Does Samsung erase your phone after too many wrong passwords?
Samsung’s current US guidance for One UI 9 says repeated incorrect lock-screen entries lead to escalating delays. After the 13th failed attempt, the device is permanently locked and must be factory reset before it can be used again. That describes the One UI 9 policy on Samsung’s support page; it does not establish what happened on an unspecified older Galaxy Note. Samsung cautions that features and settings vary by model and software version. Samsung’s One UI 9 lock-screen guidance

A factory reset makes the device usable again, but it does not recover the old lock-screen credential or the data protected by it. Samsung says it cannot remotely view, retrieve, or recover a local lock-screen PIN, pattern, or password. After a reset, the Google and Samsung accounts previously registered on the phone may be required to clear Factory Reset Protection. Samsung also says Android’s Strong Authentication requires entering the backup PIN, pattern, or password at least once every 72 hours, even if you usually unlock with biometrics.

GrapheneOS lets a user configure a separate duress PIN or password. Entering that credential where the device asks for credentials—such as the lock screen or a credential prompt in the operating system—triggers an irreversible wipe of the device and any installed eSIMs. This is a deliberate action, not an automatic response to a certain number of mistakes. If the duress credential is the same as the regular unlock credential, the normal unlock takes precedence and no wipe occurs. GrapheneOS’s feature overview

The practical distinction is the trigger: Samsung’s documented One UI 9 lockout follows repeated failed attempts and requires a factory reset for reuse; GrapheneOS’s duress wipe follows entry of a configured credential. A duress credential is therefore not a way to recover a forgotten password or a routine lockout setting. It is a destructive emergency measure, and anyone configuring it should understand that its intended result is loss of the device’s local data.
How GrapheneOS handles failed attempts and locked devices
Failed-attempt throttling
GrapheneOS separately applies increasing delays after incorrect credential attempts. Its FAQ lists a one-minute delay after attempt 5, five minutes after 6, 15 minutes after 7, 30 minutes after 8, 90 minutes after 9, four hours after 10, 12 hours after 11, 36 hours after 12, four days after 13, 13 days after 14, 41 days after 15, 123 days after 16, one year after 17, three years after 18, and nine years after 19. It allows no further attempts after attempt 20. These are throttling rules, not a duress-triggered wipe. GrapheneOS FAQ

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Locked-device auto-reboot
GrapheneOS also offers a configurable auto-reboot feature for a device that remains locked. Its purpose is to reboot the locked device so data is put at rest. It is time-based, not activated by a special credential or a run of wrong guesses. GrapheneOS’s feature overview

Can you install GrapheneOS on a Samsung Galaxy Note?
GrapheneOS’s official support is limited to its supported devices; the project’s FAQ says it officially supports devices with Weaver, a hardware security capability. The FAQ explains that hardware and firmware on most devices prevent the project from providing a reasonably secure platform. Its requirements for future devices reflect a broader security and support policy—not a restriction created solely by the duress-wipe feature.

Accordingly, a Samsung Galaxy Note should not be assumed to support GrapheneOS. Check the project’s current supported-device information and installation documentation for the exact model before making a decision. A compatible operating system is not just a question of whether an installer runs: hardware and firmware capabilities, verified boot, attestation, and ongoing security updates all matter. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before choosing a phone for GrapheneOS
- Official support: Confirm that the exact model is currently listed by GrapheneOS rather than assuming compatibility from a brand or product family.
- Bootloader unlockability: Check the exact model and carrier variant. GrapheneOS warns that some carrier variants prevent bootloader unlocking.
- Security capabilities: Verify that the device supports the hardware-backed security, verified-boot, and attestation features relevant to the project’s requirements.
- Update support: Consider how long and how reliably the manufacturer delivers firmware and security updates.
If you want to try GrapheneOS, the project recommends buying a supported device and installing the operating system yourself. Follow its web installer instructions for the exact device. This is an operating-system installation, not an app install: unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone’s data, and the guide includes relocking it after installation. Back up anything you need before beginning, and do not buy a carrier variant until you have confirmed that its bootloader can be unlocked.
