The quickest checks are the affected app’s background and battery settings, Sleep standby optimization, notification channels, background data, and network access. There is no single fix: the delay may come from OxygenOS power management, Android’s idle delivery rules, the app’s server, or the network.
First identify what is actually late
“Delayed notification” can describe several different failures. Send a test message from another account, note its send time, and compare when the alert appears.

- Late push delivery: the phone receives the alert minutes or hours after it was sent.
- Late synchronization: the push arrives, but the app fetches the new content later.
- Presentation delay: Android received the notification, but it is hidden, grouped, silent, or absent from the lock screen.
- Sound or vibration failure: the alert appears on time but produces no audible or tactile signal.
- Idle-only delay: delivery is prompt with the screen on but late after the phone has been locked.
- App-specific delay: only WhatsApp, Discord, Gmail, a bank, or another app is affected.
- System-wide delay: several unrelated apps fail together.
Check Settings > Notifications > Notification history (use Settings search if the path differs). If history shows the notification at the expected time, the problem is presentation, sound, vibration, or lock-screen policy rather than push transport.

- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app] and enable notifications and every required channel. Set the channel to Alert rather than Silent if sound is needed; allow lock-screen, banner, status-bar, and badge display as appropriate.
- Open the app’s App info > Battery usage page. Choose Allow background activity, Unrestricted, Don’t optimize, or the equivalent least-restrictive option. Avoid Restrict.
- In battery-optimization settings, exclude only apps where timely delivery matters. OnePlus documents that restricting background activity can delay notifications: OxygenOS 14 user manual.
- Search Settings for Sleep standby optimization and turn it off while testing. OnePlus says this feature reduces push-notification frequency to save power.
- Temporarily disable Battery Saver, Super power saving, extreme-saving profiles, app hibernation, and “pause activity if unused” controls.
- Allow background data. Turn off Data Saver for the test, or grant the app unrestricted data access.
- Check Do Not Disturb, Bedtime or Driving modes, work-profile schedules, the Alert Slider, sound profile, notification cooldown, and “Deliver quietly” settings.
- Restart the phone, then repeat a controlled test before changing more settings.
Menu names vary across OxygenOS 12–16, Android versions, regions, carriers, and models. Settings search terms such as background activity, battery optimization, app battery management, unrestricted data, and notification history are often more reliable than a single published path.

Why battery settings help—but do not explain every case
OxygenOS can restrict an app’s background work, and Sleep standby optimization can reduce push frequency while the phone is idle. Those settings are especially suspect when alerts arrive immediately after unlocking. Allowing background activity can improve reliability, but it may increase standby drain, heat, and background data, so apply it selectively to messaging, email, authentication, banking, work, security-camera, health, or safety apps.
Android’s Doze and App Standby rules are another variable. During deep idle, normal-priority Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) messages may wait for a maintenance window; high-priority messages are intended for time-sensitive, user-visible alerts but are not an absolute instant-delivery guarantee. See Android’s Doze and App Standby documentation. The app’s server and push implementation therefore matter as much as the phone’s settings.

Run a test that separates phone, app, and network causes
- Send a message or email from another device and record the sender’s timestamp.
- Leave the OnePlus locked for 10–15 minutes, then record arrival time. Repeat once with the screen active.
- Repeat on Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Compare the affected app with an unrelated app that normally delivers promptly.
- Open the affected app only after recording the notification time. If opening it releases a batch, background wake-up or push handling is implicated.
- Check whether the new content was already visible in the app, and whether Notification history recorded an earlier alert.
This pattern is more useful than assuming that every late alert is an OxygenOS bug.

- Confirm Wi-Fi has internet access and is not waiting for a captive-portal sign-in.
- Test without a VPN, firewall, ad blocker, or custom Private DNS; enterprise profiles can also filter push traffic.
- Install available OxygenOS, affected-app, Google Play system, and Google Play services updates. Record the exact model, Android version, OxygenOS build, app version, region or carrier, and the date the problem began.
- If many unrelated apps fail, investigate Google Play services and system networking instead of changing every app individually. Do not clear Google Play services data casually; it can affect account synchronization and device registrations.
Official model manuals are listed at OnePlus’s user-manual directory. It does not establish one notification fix for every OxygenOS build.

Refresh one affected app safely
- Force-stop the app once and reopen it. A force-stopped app may not receive notifications again until opened, so this is a test, not a permanent setting.
- Clear its cache and restart the phone.
- Recheck notification permissions and channels after the restart.
- Reinstall only after confirming backups, account recovery, two-factor authentication, recovery codes, and device-registration requirements. Messaging and banking apps can store important data locally.
If only one service is affected, check its status page and support channel. Its server may send pushes late, use normal-priority FCM, or rely on polling rather than real-time push.
Use the symptom to choose the next investigation

What not to do first
- Do not disable optimization globally. It can shorten battery life, increase data use, and create heat without fixing an app-server or network fault.
- Do not assume swiping an app from Recents always stops notifications. User reports describe such behavior on some devices, but Recents and push processing are not identical. See reports from OnePlus Community and a OnePlus Reddit discussion.
- Do not start with unofficial “Doze stopper” or notification-cleaner apps. They may require accessibility, VPN, root, or other powerful permissions and can increase battery and security risk.
- Do not factory-reset before controlled tests and complete backups. A reset can remove corrupt settings, but cannot guarantee a fix for an OxygenOS, network, or server defect.
When reports point to an OxygenOS problem
User reports describe batched or idle-only notifications on OnePlus 12, 12R, 13, and newer devices, including financial-app alerts. These reports establish a recurring user-visible pattern, not a confirmed defect affecting every model. Examples include OnePlus 12 batch-delivery reports, 12/12R reliability reports, and a OnePlus 13 idle notification report.

Contact the app developer or OnePlus when multiple unrelated apps are delayed, the behavior began after a particular update, it occurs on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, or it survives unrestricted battery settings and a clean app setup. Supply timestamps, screenshots, notification-history evidence, model, build number, app versions, network details, and exact reproduction steps. Protect critical alerts
Do not rely on one push channel for emergencies, fraud prevention, medical monitoring, or work-critical messages. Where available, enable a second route such as SMS, email, phone call, or a hardware alert. If a banking or authentication app is reinstalled, confirm backup and recovery access before removing the old installation.

The Bottom Line
Start with selective per-app background access, battery-optimization exclusions, Sleep standby optimization, notification channels, background data, and a controlled Wi-Fi/mobile-data test. If delays remain across several apps or began with a specific build, document the pattern and escalate rather than disabling every power-saving feature or assuming a factory reset will help.
