Codenamed “db,” it combined Debian, Linux kernel 6.12, KDE Plasma-based NX Desktop, an immutable root filesystem and OpenRC instead of systemd. That makes it an interesting alternative operating system for technically confident Windows users—not a drop-in replacement for Windows 11.
For ordinary use, download the current release listed at nxos.org. Treat 3.8.0 as a historical snapshot, a reproducibility target or a controlled experiment.
What Nitrux 3.8.0 was
Nitrux 3.8.0, announced on December 3, 2024 under the codename “db,” was a Debian-based Linux distribution built around KDE Plasma and Nitrux’s customized NX Desktop. Its system root was immutable by default, and it used OpenRC rather than systemd. The Calamares graphical installer handled installation.
This was an intentionally opinionated workstation. Applications were expected to come through AppImages or AppBoxes, Flatpak and Distrobox rather than treating the base system as a conventional, freely editable Debian installation. Nitrux also bundled Maui applications including Index, Nota, Station, Pix, VVave and Shelf.

Why a Windows 11 user might consider Nitrux
- No operating-system licence fee: Nitrux can be downloaded and used without buying a Windows licence, although hardware, backups and replacement applications can still cost money.
- A different desktop model: NX Desktop provided panels, launchers, windows and file management familiar enough to make the first session approachable.
- Controlled base system: An immutable root can reduce accidental modification of core files and support recovery-oriented maintenance when the documented layout is followed.
- Systemd-free architecture: OpenRC appeals to users who specifically prefer a smaller alternative to systemd.
- Open-source ecosystem: Linux applications, Flatpaks, AppImages/AppBoxes and containerized software offer broad choice without depending on one commercial desktop vendor.
Those are design advantages, not proof that Nitrux is automatically faster, safer or more private than Windows 11. Those claims depend on hardware, configuration and the software being used.

Where it differs sharply from Windows 11
| Area | Nitrux 3.8.0 | Windows 11 |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free to download and use | Licensing and activation vary by device and edition |
| Base system | Debian-based Linux with immutable root and OpenRC | Conventional writable Windows installation |
| Desktop | KDE Plasma-based NX Desktop | Windows 11 shell and desktop |
| Applications | Linux software, AppImages/AppBoxes, Flatpak and supported containers | Win32, Microsoft Store and web applications |
| Hardware support | Depends on Linux kernel, Mesa and available vendor drivers | Broad OEM and vendor Windows-driver support |
| Gaming | Steam and compatible titles can work; compatibility varies | Generally stronger support for Windows-native games and anti-cheat |
| Administration | Requires learning Nitrux-specific workflows | More familiar to existing Windows users |
| Updates and recovery | Immutable design can limit base-system drift, but documented Nitrux workflows matter | Windows Update, recovery tools and conventional maintenance |
Microsoft Office desktop features, Adobe Creative Cloud, proprietary enterprise tools, specialized peripherals and some anti-cheat games may be unavailable or require workarounds. Check every essential application before replacing Windows.

The following are current Nitrux requirements, not a version-specific specification for 3.8.0. They are an important warning for anyone considering an older Windows PC.
Current minimum guidance
- 64-bit x86 processor with AVX2 support, described as x86-64-v3.
- 4 GB RAM for a standard desktop experience.
- At least 512 MB of VRAM.
- 64 GB of storage.
- EFI/UEFI firmware and USB boot support.
- Working Mesa GBM/KMS support or supported NVIDIA open kernel modules.
See the complete minimum requirements.
Current recommended profile
- 8 GB RAM recommended; Nitrux says its optimizations have greater impact at 16 GB or more.
- Intel 8th-generation Core/Coffee Lake or newer, or AMD Ryzen 1000-series or newer.
- 2 GB VRAM, NVMe storage and a modern GPU are recommended.
- AMD RDNA-or-newer, Intel Xe/Arc or NVIDIA Turing-or-newer hardware is preferred.
Consult the recommended profile before downloading. Current Nitrux also validates GPU compatibility; an unsuitable image or unsupported acceleration can cause validation to fail and reboot the computer.

How to try Nitrux safely
- Back up personal files and create Windows recovery media. Confirm you can restore Windows before changing partitions.
- Check that the machine uses UEFI/GPT, supports USB boot and meets the current CPU and GPU requirements.
- Download the appropriate official ISO using Nitrux’s ISO guidance. Do not use an unverified mirror for an old 3.8.0 image.
- Verify the image as documented, then create a bootable USB with Rufus, Ventoy, ROSA Image Writer or
dd. - If using Linux or another Unix-like system, the documented command is:
sudo dd if=nitrux.iso of=/dev/sdX oflag=sync bs=4M status=progress
Replace /dev/sdX with the correct whole USB device, never a partition such as /dev/sdX1. Choosing the wrong device can destroy data. Ventoy also erases the selected USB during installation and has a documented low-memory caveat when booting below 4 GB RAM; follow its official instructions.
- Boot the live environment and test Wi-Fi, audio, display brightness, suspend, touchpad, Bluetooth, external monitors and GPU acceleration.
- Only then install. Automated partitioning is safer unless you understand the documented manual layout, encryption options and boot process.
- For dual boot, disable or account for Windows Fast Startup, select the correct disk and preserve a recovery path. Partitioning or encryption mistakes can make Windows unbootable.
Why Nitrux’s immutable design matters during installation
Current documentation recommends separating root and home because the root directory is immutable. For manual layouts it recommends XFS for root and F2FS for home and /var/lib, with at least 7.5 GB free for root (10 GB recommended) and at least 7 GB for /var/lib. Swap guidance is 1× RAM for suspend or 2× RAM for suspend plus hibernation. A single-partition layout can remove upgrade, rollback or rescue functionality.
These are current installation guidelines, not proof that the 3.8.0 installer used exactly the same layout. Read the full manual partitioning documentation before choosing custom partitions.

Is it beginner-friendly?
The graphical installer and prepared desktop make Nitrux easy to boot and explore. Administration is another matter. New users must understand an immutable root, alternative application formats, Nitrux-specific update mechanisms, hardware validation and Linux compatibility limits. Nitrux describes itself as a specialized workstation system rather than a traditional zero-learning-curve desktop.
The practical verdict is: easy to try, less easy to administer if you expect Ubuntu or Windows conventions.
Who should use it—and who should avoid it?
Good fit
- Users who want an open-source alternative and do not rely on Windows-only software.
- Technically confident users interested in OpenRC and an immutable base.
- People with modern UEFI hardware willing to test from a live USB.
- Linux enthusiasts who accept a specialized application-delivery model.
Poor fit
- Users dependent on Adobe Creative Cloud, Office desktop macros or proprietary corporate tools.
- Owners of legacy BIOS-only systems, unsupported GPUs or CPUs without AVX2.
- Competitive gamers requiring maximum anti-cheat compatibility.
- Anyone expecting unrestricted Debian package installation or a zero-training Windows replacement.
Should you install 3.8.0 today?
As of August 18, 2026, the official Nitrux site lists 6.1.0 as the latest release, and current documentation describes a newer Hyprland, Waybar and Crystal Dock desktop rather than the KDE Plasma-based NX Desktop associated with 3.8.0. Use the current desktop documentation to understand that change.
Install the current release for a normal system. Choose 3.8.0 only when you have a specific archival, historical or reproducibility reason, and understand that an old ISO may lack current security fixes and hardware support.
