Defold Adds Free Xbox Development Support in Version 1.14.0

Defold 1.14.0 adds Xbox development support at no charge for Microsoft-approved developers, but access to Defold resources and Microsoft’s console tools is restricted.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Defold added Xbox console development support in version 1.14.0, announced October 12, 2026. The support is free for developers approved by Microsoft, but it is not open to every Defold user: developers must first obtain Xbox approval, then request Defold’s Xbox resources through Microsoft’s Xbox middleware page.

What Defold’s Xbox support adds

The Defold Foundation says Xbox support completes its coverage of three major console platform families: Xbox, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch. That is the Foundation’s characterization; the announcement does not compare the platforms’ costs, performance, or publishing timelines.

For developers with the required access, Defold provides an Xbox extension, setup and workflow instructions for building, bundling, and testing, and Xbox-specific developer support. Game logic and assets can be shared across supported targets, but platform integrations may need separate implementation. Xbox user-management and game-save functions are provided through the Xbox extension and may require platform-specific code.

This marks a change from February 2026, when Defold described Xbox support as work in progress. The October announcement confirms availability in Defold 1.14.0 for approved developers; it does not announce a release date for any particular game.

What “free” covers—and what it does not

The announcement says Defold’s Xbox support and documentation are free of charge for approved Xbox developers. Defold describes its engine as free to use and source available; its license and policy information says the Foundation will not charge subscription, royalty, or licensing fees to access the main product. The policy also distinguishes source availability from permission for third parties to commercialize Defold itself, while allowing developers to sell their games and plugins.

  • Projects using prebuilt dmSDK libraries need to rebuild them.
  • The option to disable a shared Lua state was removed.
  • 32-bit Windows artifacts are no longer built or distributed.

These changes are particularly relevant to teams maintaining native extensions or older project build scripts. Read the complete Defold 1.14.0 release notes and assess project dependencies before upgrading.

Microsoft’s requirements still apply

Engine support is not the same as passing certification. Microsoft’s Xbox Requirements page identifies policy, technical, and product-component requirements. Its current page identifies Console version 16.4 and records changes dated August 6, 2026.

Among the stated expectations, a title must be fully functional and testable, stable, and free of serious defects. Console navigation must work with a controller. Titles targeting Xbox Series X|S must support the whole device family for that generation. Developers need to design, implement, and test for the applicable requirements; Defold’s support does not automate certification or guarantee approval.

What developers should weigh before starting

  • Eligibility: This route is for developers approved by Microsoft, followed by verification for Defold access—not for any user who installs the engine.
  • Integration work: Shared assets and game logic can help across targets, but Xbox-specific functionality may still call for platform-specific code.
  • Tool access: Microsoft’s console tools are separately controlled and NDA-restricted.
  • Upgrade work: Teams moving to 1.14.0 should check the native ABI and other breaking changes, especially if they use prebuilt libraries.
  • Certification: Microsoft’s product and technical requirements remain a distinct part of shipping an Xbox title.
