Definition of External Hard Drive: What It Is and How It Differs From an External SSD

An external hard drive is a separate storage device that connects through USB or another external interface. Here is what the term covers, how HDDs differ from SSDs, and what affects real-world use.

An external hard drive is a storage device that sits outside your computer and connects through an external interface, most often USB. People use one to add capacity, keep backup copies, or carry files between machines. In strict technical usage, “hard drive” means a hard disk drive (HDD), which stores data magnetically on spinning platters. Portable solid-state drives (SSDs) are also sold as external drives, but they store data in flash memory instead, so the label “external hard drive” can refer to two different technologies.

What makes a drive “external”

An internal drive is installed inside the computer and is part of its main storage. An external drive is a self-contained unit with its own enclosure that attaches to a host device, such as a laptop, desktop, or compatible tablet, through a cable and port. Dell describes external hard drives as useful for raw storage, backups, and moving files between computers, and notes that most use a USB cable. Lenovo defines the device the same way: it connects by cable to add capacity and to store or back up files.

Because the drive is physically separate, it can be disconnected and stored or carried. That separation is the main reason people buy one, and it is also why the drive’s own specifications matter as much as the computer’s.

HDD or SSD: two technologies under one name

An external HDD stores data magnetically on rotating platters, read and written by moving heads. An external SSD uses NAND flash memory and has no moving parts. Microsoft and Seagate describe SSDs as faster than HDDs, but the speed you actually get also depends on the interface and the rest of the data path, as covered below.

Feature External HDD External SSD
Storage technology Magnetic spinning disks (platters) NAND flash memory
Moving components Yes: rotating platters and moving heads No moving parts
Speed relative to the other type Slower, per Microsoft and Seagate descriptions of SSDs as faster than HDDs Faster, per Microsoft and Seagate; actual results depend on interface
Common form factors Compact portable units and larger desktop units (Western Digital distinguishes these) Portable units; Seagate’s portable SSD uses flash memory
Power arrangement Portable units are generally bus-powered through the data connection; larger desktop units commonly use AC power Not stated as a general rule in the sources reviewed; check the specific model

Use “external HDD” for a product built on spinning magnetic disks and “external SSD” for a flash-based unit. “External drive” or “external storage” is a safe umbrella term when the technology is not specified. Seagate draws the same line in its product FAQ: its portable SSD uses flash memory, while an external hard drive uses spinning disks.

Connections: USB is common, but not the whole story

USB is the usual connection. Dell lists USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 among common connections for external drives, and other current products use newer USB generations or Thunderbolt. Connector shape alone does not tell you the data rate a drive supports. Check the drive’s specification and the host port’s specification together, because a fast drive on an older port runs at the port’s speed.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Power: bus-powered portable drives and AC-powered desktop drives

Portable external HDDs are generally compact enough to draw power through the same USB cable that carries data. Larger desktop external HDDs commonly plug into a wall outlet. Western Digital describes this split, and Seagate’s portable-drive documentation confirms bus power for its portable family. These are product patterns, not guarantees, so confirm the power requirement in the documentation for the exact model before you buy a cable or adapter.

Performance: why advertised speed is not copy speed

A drive’s advertised peak transfer rate is a ceiling, not a guaranteed copy speed. Seagate explains that performance depends on the storage technology and the interface, and that the source drive can limit how fast a file transfers. The host port, the type of workload (a few large files behave differently from thousands of small ones), and the file system can all change what you see in practice.

What external drives are used for

  • Adding storage: extra space for files, media libraries, or applications that do not fit on the internal drive.
  • Keeping backup copies: a second copy of files stored separately from the computer.
  • Moving files: carrying data between compatible computers.

How to choose between options

  • Technology and workload: HDDs use moving magnetic components; SSDs use flash and are described as faster by Microsoft and Seagate.
  • Capacity: choose enough space for the files you intend to store, with room to grow. Available capacities vary by product.
  • Portability and power: a bus-powered portable unit suits carrying; a desktop unit that needs its own power suits a fixed location.
  • Connection and host compatibility: confirm the computer has a compatible port and that the drive’s interface matches it. The interface also limits potential speed.
  • File system and operating system: the drive may need formatting, and file systems are not universally interchangeable between operating systems.

Formatting and operating-system compatibility

A new drive may arrive with a file system that one operating system reads and another does not, or it may be unformatted. Lenovo discusses file-system choice for external drives and cautions that formatting can erase data, so copy anything you need off the drive before reformatting it.

What a drive does and does not protect

An external drive is useful for backups, but one external copy is not by itself protection against every kind of loss. Drives can fail, be lost, or be damaged, and a single copy that sits next to the computer shares its risks. The sources reviewed for this article describe backup use but do not publish a failure rate or a complete backup standard for these products, so no lifespan or reliability figure is offered here. Treat an external drive as one copy in a broader plan, not as a guarantee.
