To implement deferred deep links in Flutter, first configure verified HTTPS links—Android App Links and iOS Universal Links—and route those URLs to app destinations. Then add a separate deferred-link service or custom handoff if a destination must survive an app installation. Platform links handle routing into an installed app; by themselves, they do not preserve an attribution payload through a store install.

Direct links and deferred links solve different problems

A direct deep link opens a specific route when the app is installed. A deferred deep link carries a destination across the install flow so the app can open the intended content on first launch. Flutter supports deep linking on iOS, Android, and the web, but install-spanning delivery requires an additional service or implementation. See Flutter’s deep-linking documentation and, for one SDK-based option, AppsFlyer’s Flutter Unified Deep Linking guide.

For most apps, begin with platform-verified HTTPS links tied to a domain you control. Android App Links and iOS Universal Links establish that association; Flutter then maps an incoming URL to an internal route. Flutter’s platform guides use go_router in their examples, while its general deep-linking guide recommends Router or a routing package for more complex navigation.

Plan the URL contract and Flutter routes

Choose stable, predictable URLs

Define HTTPS hosts and path patterns before configuring either platform. For example, a product link might use /products/:id, while an invitation might use /invite/:code. Keep the URL contract stable so links remain meaningful across app versions. Treat path values and query parameters as user-controlled input: validate them, and authorize access in the app rather than assuming a link proves permission.

Map incoming links to app destinations

Use Flutter’s Router API or a routing package such as go_router to parse incoming URLs and navigate to the matching screen. Named routes have limitations for complex deep-linking requirements; Router-based navigation gives more flexibility for advanced route handling. Keep route parsing aligned with the URL contract, including unknown paths and missing or invalid parameters.

Configure Android App Links

Android App Links associate an HTTPS domain with a specific Android app. Flutter’s guide describes the mechanism as: “An app link is a type of deep link that uses http or https and is exclusive to Android devices.” Follow Flutter’s Android App Links setup guide for the platform configuration.

  1. Add an HTTP(S) intent filter to the relevant activity in the Android manifest and set android:autoVerify="true".

  2. Host the association file at https://<domain>/.well-known/assetlinks.json. It must identify the Android application ID/package name and the SHA-256 signing certificate fingerprint. For an app distributed through Google Play, use the Play app-signing certificate fingerprint.

  3. Test app dispatch with the adb command described in Flutter’s guide, then tap a real URL on a device. An adb launch can check whether Android dispatches the link to the app, but a real web-link tap also exercises the website and app association.

Configure iOS Universal Links

Universal Links associate an HTTPS domain with an iOS app through Associated Domains and an Apple-hosted site association file. Use Flutter’s Universal Links setup guide for the entitlement and file format.

  1. Enable the Associated Domains capability and add applinks:<domain> to the app entitlements.

  2. Host apple-app-site-association at https://<domain>/.well-known/apple-app-site-association. Include the app identifier and the path components the app is permitted to handle.

  3. Test on a device or simulator using the checks in Flutter’s guide. Apple’s CDN may take up to 24 hours to fetch the association file, so changes might not be reflected immediately.

Check Flutter deep-link handling against plugin behavior

Flutter 3.27 changed the default deep-linking handler to enabled. If a third-party plugin is responsible for receiving URLs, follow that plugin’s instructions for your Flutter version and check whether Flutter’s built-in handler must be disabled to avoid competing handlers. The settings are platform-specific:

Do not disable Flutter’s handler automatically: Flutter’s own platform-link setup uses the built-in handler. Compatibility depends on the integration. The version change is documented in the Flutter deep-linking flag change notice.

Add a deferred-link handoff only when needed

Verified App Links and Universal Links can route URLs into an installed app, but they do not by themselves explain how an attribution payload survives a trip to an app store and installation. Decide what must be carried forward: a referral token, campaign attribution, analytics context, a short-link destination, or some combination. Then choose a service or build a custom handoff that supports that requirement.

AppsFlyer documents one SDK-based option for direct and deferred link events. Its current Flutter guide requires registering the listener before SDK initialization; that ordering is specific to AppsFlyer. Review its Unified Deep Linking instructions and verify the current setup for your SDK version and platforms. This example is not a comparative ranking of deferred-link providers.

Test installed, cold-start, and deferred flows

Exercise each state on both platforms. Flutter’s DevTools link validator can check configured links, and the platform cookbooks describe device and simulator checks. For deferred delivery, use the chosen service’s supported testing procedure; link configuration alone does not establish that an attribution payload will be delivered after installation.

Android App Links and iOS Universal Links compared

Concern Android iOS
Verified HTTPS mechanism App Links: an activity intent filter and assetlinks.json. Universal Links: Associated Domains and apple-app-site-association.
Domain association includes Android application/package identifier and SHA-256 signing fingerprint. Apple app identifier and permitted path components.
Plugin-handler consideration Plugin users may need to opt out of Flutter’s default handler using flutter_deeplinking_enabled=false. Plugin users may need to set FlutterDeepLinkingEnabled=false.
Testing consideration An adb launch tests app dispatch; tapping a real URL also checks the web association. Apple’s CDN may take up to 24 hours to fetch the association file.

Platform setup details are in Flutter’s Android App Links, Universal Links, and deep-linking guides.

What replaced Firebase Dynamic Links?

Firebase says Dynamic Links is deprecated and that the service is shutting down. Its migration documentation describes moving to platform links—Android App Links and iOS Universal Links. Those provide verified direct linking, but if an app still needs post-install routing, plan a separate deferred-link mechanism as part of the migration rather than assuming platform links replace that behavior.

For an existing integration, inventory the link domains, parameters, fallback behavior, analytics dependencies, and older app versions that may still receive links. Firebase’s receive guide also warns of unexpected results when Flutter deep linking is enabled: Android receives a link from a terminated state via getInitialLink, while iOS is not guaranteed to do so. Consult Firebase’s Dynamic Links deprecation FAQ, its Flutter link receiving guide, and its App Links and Universal Links migration guide when planning the change.

How to evaluate deferred-link options

Compare candidate services or custom approaches against the behavior your product actually needs. Check Flutter support and coverage of both target platforms, deferred as well as direct links, attribution and analytics, domain and fallback control, data and privacy requirements, plugin ownership and compatibility, and current pricing and program terms. The documentation cited here establishes AppsFlyer as one documented SDK option; it does not establish comparative performance, reliability, or a best provider.
