To require your Apple Account password for every App Store purchase, go to Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > Password Settings and select Always Require. If Password Settings is missing, Face ID or Touch ID may be enabled for App Store purchases.
Require a password for every purchase
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Media & Purchases.
- Tap Password Settings.
- Under purchases, select Always Require. Apple says this asks for your password each time, even when you are already signed in to your Apple Account. See Apple’s purchase-password instructions.
If you choose Require After 15 Minutes instead, you will not be asked for the password again when you make another purchase within 15 minutes of entering it.

If Password Settings does not appear
Apple says the setting may be hidden when Face ID or Touch ID is enabled for App Store purchases. To reach the password-frequency options, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, turn off Face ID or Touch ID for iTunes & App Store, then return to Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases. The labels can vary by iOS version.
Choose a control that matches what you want to prevent
A password prompt is an authentication step, not a purchase block. If you want to stop transactions rather than approve them with a password, consider these separate controls:

Block in-app purchases with Screen Time
- Enable Screen Time if it is not already on.
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Apps & Websites > App Store > In-app Purchases.
- Select Blocked.
Apple describes Screen Time as a way to require a password for future purchases, prevent certain purchase types, or turn off purchasing. Menu paths may differ between iOS versions; if the labels on your iPhone do not match, follow the options displayed on your device. See Apple’s Screen Time purchase controls.
Use Ask to Buy for a child’s own device
For a child in a Family Sharing group who uses their own device, Ask to Buy lets the family organizer review a request and approve or decline it. Apple also documents requiring a password for every purchase when a child uses the adult’s device. Ask to Buy, Screen Time restrictions, and the purchase-password setting are distinct controls; enabling one does not automatically configure the others. Free downloads and password protection
Apple provides a separate password setting for free items, so paid purchases can be protected while free downloads are less cumbersome. However, when Face ID or Touch ID is enabled for App Store purchases, Apple says biometric authentication is required for every download, including free items. Apple also says password protection cannot be turned off completely for paid items on iPhone, iPad, or computer. See Apple’s purchase-password instructions.
