DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017 is not universally better than Claude or GPT. In DeepSeek’s published comparison it leads GPT-5.6 Sol on all six listed coding benchmarks and beats Opus 5 on DeepSWE v1.1 and Automation-Bench v1.0.6, while trailing Opus 5 on Terminal-Bench 4.0, ProgramBench and NL2Repo-Bench. Those figures are vendor-reported, depend on named agent harnesses, and do not establish a universal ranking. For a real project, choose among them using the task’s coding success rate, tool and image needs, latency, output length, API cost, context requirements, integration, license and available hardware.
What DeepSeek V4.1-Flash-1017 is
A coding-agent update rather than a small patch
V4.1-Flash-1017 is DeepSeek’s 2026 update aimed at coding agents and end-to-end project work. The company says reinforcement learning with self-feedback is used to improve projects “from game creation to 3D modeling.” Its release announcement emphasizes higher benchmark scores, faster task completion and shorter outputs. Those goals matter when an agent must inspect a repository, edit several files, run tools, diagnose failures and return a compact patch instead of producing a long explanation.

The model is exposed through the API name deepseek-flash. DeepSeek says the legacy names deepseek-v4-flash and deepseek-v4-flash-vision-exp are retired and routed to V4.1-Flash-1017 at Flash pricing. Always verify the model identifier in the service you are using; an old name in a script can continue to work while silently pointing at a newer model.

DeepSeek describes V4.1-Flash as a 552-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, with 8 billion parameters active for input processing and 16 billion active for output generation. The same publisher says its key-value cache uses one-quarter of the HBM and one-eighth of the SSD storage required by the previous generation. These are DeepSeek’s architectural claims, not an independently audited hardware benchmark.

The model card specifies a 1-million-token context window. That makes repository-scale instructions, long logs and large reference sets possible, but a large advertised window does not guarantee that every task will be inexpensive or accurate. DeepSeek recommends allowing at least 256,000 maximum output tokens for production use. In practice, teams still need to trim irrelevant files, cap runaway tool loops and monitor latency and spend.
V4.1-Flash-1017 supports native multimodal input. An agent can therefore combine source code with screenshots, diagrams or other supported visual material instead of converting every visual clue into text first. Multimodal capability is useful for UI bugs, game scenes, 3D assets and image-based test failures, but it does not remove the need for deterministic tests and human review.
License and serving options
Released weights are MIT licensed according to the Hugging Face model card. That permissive license can simplify internal deployment and modification, subject to the terms of the specific weights, dependencies and data used around the model. The model card documents SGLang serving, Docker Model Runner and quantized deployment options. Whether any of those options fit your organization depends on GPU memory, storage, networking, concurrency targets and the operational skills available to run an inference service.
Published coding benchmark comparison
The following numbers come from DeepSeek-AI’s 2026 model-card comparison. They are useful for seeing the strengths claimed for each model, not for declaring a universal winner.
| Benchmark | V4.1-Flash-1017 | GPT-5.6 Sol | Opus 5 | V4.1 result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terminal-Bench 4.0 | 42.3 | 39.9 | 51.8 | Leads GPT-5.6 Sol; trails Opus 5 |
| DeepSWE v1.1 | 77.0 | 73.0 | 74.0 | Leads both listed comparators |
| ProgramBench | 29.1 | 23.0 | 37.0 | Leads GPT-5.6 Sol; trails Opus 5 |
| NL2Repo-Bench | 68.2 | 56.8 | 75.3 | Leads GPT-5.6 Sol; trails Opus 5 |
| Automation-Bench v1.0.6 | 60.5 | 45.8 | 50.3 | Leads both listed comparators |
| Agents’ Last Exam | 35.4 | 26.7 | 28.6 | Leads both listed comparators |
How to read the table
On these six published tasks, V4.1-Flash-1017 scores above GPT-5.6 Sol in every row. It is ahead of Opus 5 on DeepSWE v1.1 and Automation-Bench v1.0.6, but Opus 5 has higher scores on Terminal-Bench 4.0, ProgramBench and NL2Repo-Bench. The pattern suggests a model that is highly competitive for several autonomous coding and automation workloads, not one that dominates every repository or programming language.

The comparison is also harness-dependent. DeepSeek’s model card says Terminal-Bench 4.0 used the Claude Code harness and DeepSWE v1.1 used Mini-SWE-V2. A harness controls prompts, tool definitions, retries, environment setup and stopping rules; changing it can change the score even when the underlying model is unchanged. Dataset versions, hidden tests, budget limits and pass criteria matter as well.
Why older independent results cannot be substituted
NIST CAISI’s 2025 evaluation of an earlier generation on SWE-bench Verified used 489 problems from 12 GitHub repositories. It reported 63.0 ± 2.3 for OpenAI GPT-5 (2025), 66.7 ± 2.2 for Anthropic Opus 4 (2025) and 54.8 ± 2.4 for DeepSeek V3.1 (2025). Those results are useful context for the importance of naming the exact model and protocol, but they are not a direct test of V4.1-Flash-1017. Do not combine them with the 1017 table to create a single league ranking.

Repository repair and coding agents
For an agent that must locate a defect, edit code, run tests and iterate, the relevant measure is successful task completion under your repository’s tools and time budget. The published DeepSWE, Automation-Bench and Agents’ Last Exam results make V4.1-Flash-1017 a serious candidate for autonomous workflows. Opus 5’s higher Terminal-Bench, ProgramBench and NL2Repo-Bench scores indicate that it may be the safer choice for environments resembling those evaluations, especially when terminal interaction, program synthesis or natural-language-to-repository translation dominates.
GPT-5.6 Sol scores lower than V4.1-Flash-1017 on every row in this particular table, but that does not prove it will lose on your codebase. Repository language mix, build tools, test reliability, prompt conventions, tool permissions and retry policy can outweigh a few benchmark points.
Visual and tool-heavy work
Native multimodal input gives V4.1-Flash-1017 a direct path for screenshots, diagrams and visual debugging. If your workflow is text-only, that feature may have little value; if you maintain a front-end, game or 3D project, it can reduce the translation work between what a developer sees and what the agent receives. Compare the actual image formats, tool APIs and IDE or harness integrations you need rather than assuming that “multimodal” means identical support everywhere.

Latency and output length
DeepSeek says the 1017 release speeds task completion and shortens outputs. Shorter responses can reduce review time and token charges, but an abbreviated answer is not automatically a correct patch. Measure time to a passing test, number of tool calls, retries and tokens per completed task. A model that writes less but needs an extra debugging loop may cost more than one that explains a larger first attempt.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The 1-million-token window is valuable for monorepos, generated files, long test logs and design references. It should be treated as capacity, not as a reason to send an entire repository on every turn. Indexing relevant files, summarizing stable decisions and enforcing per-tool output limits usually produce faster and more reproducible agents than filling the window indiscriminately.
Integration and governance
DeepSeek documents OpenAI Responses API compatibility and support through DeepSeek Harness, WorkBuddy/CodeBuddy and OpenCode. Compatibility reduces migration effort, but API-compatible does not mean behavior-compatible: tool schemas, streaming events, error codes, rate limits and context handling still need tests. For regulated or confidential code, decide whether data may leave your environment, how logs are retained, who can access prompts and whether a self-hosted MIT-licensed deployment is preferable.
Using V4.1-Flash-1017 through the API
- Select the current model name. Configure your client to request
deepseek-flash. Treatdeepseek-v4-flashanddeepseek-v4-flash-vision-expas retired aliases that route to the 1017 release, not as separate models. - Confirm the endpoint and response format. DeepSeek documents OpenAI Responses API compatibility. Test a small request, inspect the returned model identifier and verify that your tool-call, streaming and error-handling code behaves as expected.
- Set production sampling deliberately. The model card recommends temperature 1.0 and top_p 1.0. Start with those values for the documented baseline, then change one setting at a time while measuring test-passing rate and tool-loop behavior.
- Budget context and output. Although the context window is 1 million tokens, DeepSeek recommends allowing at least 256,000 maximum tokens in production. Set tighter per-request and per-tool limits when a task does not need that capacity, and stop an agent after repeated identical failures.
- Instrument completed work. Record model version, prompt and tool definitions, input and output tokens, wall-clock time, retries, test results and the final diff. This lets you compare V4.1-Flash-1017 with Claude or GPT on the same tasks instead of relying on anecdotal quality.
Pricing details that change over time
DeepSeek states that off-peak API rates are 50% of peak rates. The 1017 announcement lists Search and Fetch at $0.75 per 1,000 calls. It also says server-side calls made through DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code and Codex are free for DeepSeek API users until October 31, 2026 at 16:00 UTC; billing begins after that stated deadline. These terms are time-sensitive, so check the live pricing and service documentation before committing to a budget. The available data does not establish a single per-token price that applies to every region, account or traffic period.
Self-hosting: what is documented and what you must size
Supported paths
The Hugging Face model card documents SGLang, Docker Model Runner and quantized deployment. A typical evaluation path is to start with a quantized build on hardware you already operate, expose an internal endpoint, and run a representative repository workload before planning a larger cluster. SGLang can suit teams that want a dedicated serving stack; Docker Model Runner can be more convenient for container-oriented environments. The choice affects batching, observability, upgrades and failure recovery.

Hardware and operational limits
No single consumer-GPU requirement is established for the full 552B-parameter mixture-of-experts model in the supplied specifications. Active-parameter counts and KV-cache savings do not translate directly into a guaranteed workstation configuration. Weight precision, quantization, context length, concurrency and framework overhead determine memory use. Plan capacity from the exact artifact you intend to serve, then validate loading time, prompt latency, generation speed and quality under your expected concurrency.
- Reserve memory for model weights, runtime overhead and the KV cache at your chosen context length.
- Measure storage for the full and quantized artifacts; DeepSeek’s one-eighth SSD statement compares its cache requirement with the prior generation and is not a promise that the complete model fits on a particular drive.
- Use access controls, network isolation and audit logs when source code or credentials pass through the service.
- Pin the model revision and serving image so that a later weight or runtime update does not silently change behavior.
Reproducibility checks
Record the exact weight revision, quantization, serving framework version, sampling parameters, context limits and tool wrapper. Compare a self-hosted run with the API on a fixed task set. Differences in tokenizer, system prompt, tool parser or stop conditions can look like model-quality changes when they are deployment changes.

How to run a fair comparison on your codebase
- Build a fixed task set. Include bug fixes, feature additions, refactors, test writing, documentation changes and one visual or tool-heavy task if relevant. Keep issue descriptions and repository snapshots identical.
- Standardize the harness. Use the same shell permissions, package caches, test commands, timeout, maximum turns and retry policy. If a model requires a different native harness, document that difference rather than presenting the scores as directly interchangeable.
- Define success before running. Require the hidden or held-out tests to pass, forbid edits outside the allowed scope and check for security regressions, flaky tests and unnecessary dependency changes.
- Repeat enough to expose variance. Stochastic sampling can produce different patches from the same prompt. Run multiple trials or use a deterministic setting where appropriate, and report the distribution rather than the single best result.
- Track engineering metrics. Capture pass rate, time to first useful patch, time to passing tests, number of tool calls, tokens, review corrections, reverted changes and infrastructure cost.
- Review the failures. Classify misses as misunderstood requirements, bad code, tool misuse, context overload, environment failure or test flakiness. This tells you whether switching models or fixing the harness will produce the larger improvement.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Assuming a benchmark score is a product guarantee
Published scores are conditional measurements. Reproduce the task family and harness as closely as possible, then validate on your own repositories. A model can lead one benchmark and still lose on a language, framework or build system that the benchmark underrepresents.
Mixing model generations
Do not describe NIST’s GPT-5, Opus 4 or DeepSeek V3.1 results as evidence about the 1017 release. Pin the exact model identifier and date in every experiment, including aliases that may be rerouted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSending too much context
A million-token limit can encourage indiscriminate uploads. Large irrelevant logs increase latency and can bury the instructions that matter. Use repository maps, targeted file selection and bounded command output before increasing context.
Best Value
Letting an agent loop indefinitely
Shorter outputs and faster turns do not prevent repeated failed commands. Set maximum turns, detect identical errors, require a test result before accepting a patch and preserve the working tree so you can recover after a bad edit.
Ignoring deployment and data policy
An MIT license for released weights does not answer every compliance question. Review the model, tokenizer, serving stack, telemetry, retention, secrets handling and the license of any third-party component used in your deployment.
Comparing prices without completed-task accounting
Peak versus off-peak rates, Search and Fetch calls, output length, retries and free-period promotions all affect the bill. Calculate cost per accepted change and include reviewer time and failed runs.

Bottom line
V4.1-Flash-1017 is a credible coding-agent option with a 1-million-token context window, native multimodal input, an MIT-licensed released-weight path and strong vendor-published results. It leads GPT-5.6 Sol across the six listed benchmarks and outperforms Opus 5 on two, while Opus 5 remains ahead on three others. Use the published table to choose what to test, not to skip testing. The right production model is the one that delivers the highest rate of passing, reviewable changes for your repositories at an acceptable latency, cost and governance risk.
