Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDeepSeek Harness (DSH) and Pi Agent are both open-source coding-agent projects, but they start from different assumptions. DSH offers a configurable, plugin-oriented runtime with several modes; Pi keeps its default terminal toolkit small and lets users add capabilities through extensions, skills, prompts, themes, and packages. Neither project’s official materials establish a universal performance winner, so the practical choice depends on the workflow you want.
What are DeepSeek Harness and Pi Agent?
DeepSeek Harness is a project from DeepSeek AI. Its repository identifies it as a developer preview, lists an MIT license, and warns that compatibility-breaking changes may occur. That preview status matters if you are considering relying on it in a production workflow.
Pi Agent is a terminal coding harness. Its README describes a deliberately minimal default setup that can be expanded with skills, prompt templates, TypeScript extensions, themes, and packages.
How do their designs differ?
DeepSeek Harness: capabilities organized as plugins
DSH describes an “everything is a plugin” architecture. DeepSeek’s official DeepSeek Harness developer-preview page says: “Every capability is a plugin that can be swapped or recomposed: models, tools, skills, sessions, sandboxes, storage, loops, scheduling, and the UI.” In practice, its design is aimed at assembling a runtime from configurable components.

Pi Agent: a small default toolset with extension points
Pi’s README names four default tools: read, write, edit, and bash. Rather than provide a large built-in agent environment, it supports extensions through skills, prompt templates, TypeScript extensions, themes, and packages. The project says it does not include built-in subagents or a plan mode.
What modes and workflows are available?
The projects describe different kinds of modes: DSH lists agent modes, while Pi lists ways to interact with its harness. Their labels are not directly equivalent.
Rank #2
| Project | Documented modes or workflows | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| DeepSeek Harness | Standard, Code, Minimal, and Creator modes, described on DeepSeek’s product page. | Standard is presented as a full coding agent, with file editing, shell, search, skills, planning, goals, subagents, and workflows. Code exposes operations through a Code Mode SDK. Minimal keeps a shell tool and file editor. Creator adds runtime inspection and preset-authoring capabilities. |
| Pi Agent | Interactive, print/JSON, RPC, and SDK modes, described in the Pi README. | These are documented interaction or integration paths for Pi’s terminal harness, whose default tools are read, write, edit, and bash. |
Choose based on the interaction path you need and the abilities you want available by default. A richer built-in environment can reduce the need to assemble pieces yourself; a smaller base can suit users who prefer to shape the agent around an existing workflow.
How do extensions and provider choices compare?
DSH’s plugin architecture organizes capabilities as components that can be selected or replaced through configuration. Pi’s documented extension points include skills, prompts, TypeScript extensions, themes, and packages. These approaches are not interchangeable by name alone: compare each project’s mechanism with the tools, conventions, and maintenance you are prepared to take on.

Neither project should be treated as tied to a single model on the basis of its architecture. Pi’s README lists multiple providers, and DSH describes model adapters as part of its plugin system. Provider availability and setup can change, so consult each project’s current documentation before choosing a provider or building an integration.
How do you get started?
DeepSeek Harness
- For the documented Web UI quick start, install or use a current Node.js environment, then run
npx @deepseek-ai/dsh webas shown in the DSH repository README. - Alternatively, the README documents running DSH from a source checkout; follow its current instructions for that route.
- Check the README and release notes before adopting a command or configuration in a lasting setup, because the repository labels DSH a developer preview and warns of breaking compatibility changes.
Pi Agent
- Use the global npm installation command documented in the Pi README, then start the agent with
pi. - Authenticate using an API key or a supported provider login, and select a provider using the README’s current guidance.
- Check the live README for current package names and provider availability; both can change.
Which one should you choose?
| If you prioritize… | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A runtime with many configurable building blocks and several documented agent modes | DeepSeek Harness | Its product page describes plugin-based components and Standard, Code, Minimal, and Creator modes. |
| A minimal terminal baseline that you expand selectively | Pi Agent | Its README documents four default tools and extension points for adding capabilities. |
| A stable, settled production dependency | Verify both projects’ current releases and notes before deciding | DSH explicitly identifies as preview software; the materials reviewed do not establish a directly comparable stable-release status for Pi. |
| The fastest or most capable agent for your work | Test both on your own matched tasks | The official project materials do not establish a controlled head-to-head performance result. |
Is one faster or better overall?
No conclusion about speed, safety, or overall capability follows from the project descriptions alone. A fair comparison would need to hold the model or provider, agent versions, task set, execution environment, and measurement method constant. Anecdotes or results from unmatched setups do not establish which harness will perform better for your work.
