Treat Cursor and GitHub Copilot like contributors: give them concise, version-controlled project constraints, ask for small changes that preserve behavior, inspect the entire diff, and run your own tests and quality checks before merging. Keep Git history available for recovery, and limit access to sensitive files and actions.
Start with the architecture your project already has
Before writing instructions, identify how the codebase currently divides responsibilities. Find where business logic belongs, which modules own particular tasks, and which existing implementations are the examples the team wants new code to follow. Also record the commands used to run tests, linting, type checks, and builds.
Point the assistant to representative files and established patterns rather than asking it to invent an architecture. The goal is not to document every design preference; it is to make the project’s real conventions easy to follow.
Choose instruction files by tool and scope
Keep shared guidance in the repository so it can be reviewed and improved alongside the code. Cursor documents project rules in .cursor/rules and support for AGENTS.md. Its legacy .cursorrules file is deprecated, so prefer the current mechanisms.

For GitHub Copilot, use .github/copilot-instructions.md for repository-wide guidance and path-specific *.instructions.md files when only certain directories need a rule. GitHub also documents AGENTS.md as an option for guidance shared across supported agents, and skills for workflows invoked as needed.
A practical arrangement is to keep durable architecture and contribution expectations in shared project documentation, then add short tool-specific files only for configuration the tool needs. Scope instructions to the paths where they apply; a rule for one subsystem should not accidentally constrain unrelated code. This is a maintainability approach, not a vendor guarantee that any particular layout will work for every repository.

Write rules that can guide an actual change
Vague requests such as “write clean code” leave the assistant to guess what the team means. Prefer instructions that identify the responsible module, point to a canonical example, name files that should not change without a reason, and specify the tests or command expected for a change.
- Responsibility: name the existing module or layer that owns the behavior.
- Examples: link to a representative implementation in the repository.
- Boundaries: identify paths or public interfaces that should remain untouched unless the task requires a change.
- Verification: state which tests and quality commands apply.
For directories with different conventions, put the relevant direction in path-scoped instructions instead of making a repository-wide rule that is too broad. Keep the rule set concise and revise it in response to recurring mistakes. Cursor’s documentation advises: “Start simple. Add rules only when you notice Agent making the same mistake repeatedly.” Cursor’s rules guidance

Ask for bounded, behavior-preserving work
For a substantial feature or refactor, first ask for a plan that names likely files and the existing patterns it intends to preserve. Then request a specific implementation, not an open-ended cleanup of the surrounding code. Planning can expose misunderstandings early, but it does not guarantee that the resulting design will fit.
Break refactors into small transformations whose intended behavior stays the same. Martin Fowler and Kent Beck’s Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code, Second Edition, explains this approach as a way to reduce the risk of errors while improving design. It is a general refactoring reference, not a Cursor or Copilot manual.

Review the full diff and run your own checks
Read the complete change set, including files that may not appear in an AI review summary. Look for misplaced responsibilities, duplicated logic, unnecessary abstractions, public behavior changes, unrequested files, and generated configuration edits. Confirm that the implementation matches the task and the repository’s conventions, rather than accepting a plausible-looking patch on trust.
- Inspect the diff: use your Git client or
git diffto review every changed file and understand why it changed. - Run relevant tests: use the project’s documented test commands, including focused tests for the changed behavior.
- Run quality checks: execute the applicable lint, type-check, and build commands.
- Resolve unexplained changes: ask for a reason or remove edits that are outside the task.
- Commit or merge only after verification: keep the change reviewable and preserve a known recovery point.
GitHub says Copilot code review excludes some file types, including package.json and Gemfile.lock, as well as logs and SVGs. Those exclusions mean a review summary is not proof that every relevant file was examined. Check excluded files yourself and rely on repository checks for dependency and configuration changes too. Protect the workspace and retain a recovery path
Cursor agents can edit workspace files and run terminal commands. Its security guidance warns that auto-reload can cause changes to run before a person reviews them. Use approval controls for sensitive operations, and use .cursorignore to block agent access to files it should not read. Cursor also documents explicit approval for actions involving sensitive-data exposure.
Workspace edits may be saved immediately, so do not treat an open editor buffer as a safe staging area. Cursor’s documentation puts the recovery principle plainly: “Always use version control so you can revert changes.” Make sure the work is tracked in Git and review what will be committed before merging. A lightweight routine for every AI-assisted change
- Give the assistant the task, relevant paths, and one or two examples of the project’s established pattern.
- State the behavioral boundary and the checks the change must pass.
- Keep the requested change small enough to review as a unit.
- Inspect every changed file, not only the assistant’s explanation or review summary.
- Run project tests and quality checks independently; use Git to reject or revert changes that do not fit.
There is no established universal file layout or measured guarantee that instruction files reduce code complexity. Their value is practical: they make conventions explicit and repeatable, while review, tests, and version control remain necessary to keep generated changes maintainable.
