No deepfake detector can prove by itself that a photo or video is real or fake. A tool produces evidence about a particular file and a particular task—such as spotting signs of image manipulation—not a definitive account of who made the media or whether the event it depicts happened. Compare tools by what they accept, what they test for, how they were evaluated, and the consequences of a wrong result.
What does a deepfake detection tool actually test?
“Deepfake detection” covers different technical tasks, and a result is meaningful only within the scope a tool was designed and tested for. NIST’s Open Media Forensics Challenge (OpenMFC) treats image and video detection as separate benchmark tasks; a result on a still image does not establish a tool’s ability to assess a video or audio recording.

| Task | What it may assess | What the result does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Generated-media classification | Whether an image or other supported input resembles generated media or patterns represented in the model’s training or evaluation. | Who created it, whether the depicted event occurred, or whether a different type of manipulation was used. |
| Manipulation detection | Whether the supplied file shows signs of alteration, such as a face swap or other editing covered by the tool’s design. | That every alteration is malicious, or that an unflagged file is untouched. |
| Identity or face-swap analysis | Whether a face or identity-related content appears manipulated, within the system’s tested scope. | A person’s identity or consent without other suitable evidence and review. |
| Manipulation localization | Which region of an image or video may have been changed, if the system supports localization. | That the highlighted region is definitively fake; localization itself can be wrong. |
| Known-generator or forensic-signature analysis | Clues associated with particular generation or editing methods represented in the tool’s capabilities. | Reliable coverage of unfamiliar tools, new generator families, or media transformed after creation. |
| Provenance validation | Whether available provenance information or a content history can be checked. | Whether media without a provenance record is fake, or whether a record alone proves the depicted event is true. |
A classifier estimates whether the supplied media resembles patterns it can recognize. It does not independently verify authorship or the truth of the scene. Likewise, forensic inspection can surface anomalies, but anomalies can also arise in genuine or edited media, and the absence of a detected anomaly is not proof of authenticity.
How do detection, provenance, and watermarking differ?
Statistical detection, provenance or authentication, and watermarking or labeling are distinct approaches. NIST’s Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content describes them as approaches that can complement one another, rather than interchangeable tests.

- Detection looks for signals in the media that may be associated with generation or manipulation.
- Provenance can help establish a content history when a trustworthy record is available and can be validated.
- Watermarks and labels can identify or signal synthetic content when present and detectable.
These signals have different limitations: a file may lack provenance or a watermark without being fake, while a record or label does not by itself prove that the content accurately depicts reality. Treat each as one piece of evidence and consider how it was created and validated.
How should you compare deepfake detection tools?
A meaningful comparison starts with the intended use, not a vendor’s headline “accuracy” figure. OpenMFC benchmark results, for example, apply to defined tasks and input conditions; they should not be generalized automatically to arbitrary field footage or another modality.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Modality and input | Does the tool accept still images, video, audio, or live capture? Which file types and quality levels are supported? |
| Claim tested | Is it classifying generated media, detecting manipulation, checking an identity or face swap, locating altered regions, looking for known signatures, or validating provenance? |
| Evaluation set | Which generators and manipulation types were represented? Was testing independent of training data? Were newer generator families included? |
| Real-world degradation | Was it tested on compression, resizing, cropping, screenshots, edits, low light, noise, or platform re-encoding? NIST recommends representative “dirty” evidence, including low-bitrate surveillance footage and social-media-style compression. |
| Error reporting | Are false-positive and false-negative rates reported at the actual decision threshold? Are ROC/AUC results and confidence calibration available? A single accuracy figure is incomplete without the class mix, test conditions, and threshold. |
| Operational fit | Can the system handle the workflow and volume required? What are its latency, human-review, explainability, privacy and retention practices, and update and validation schedule? |
NIST’s Guardians program calls for realistic data curation, task-specific validation, ROC/AUC analysis, and reassessment after novel threats or software updates. Ask for evidence tied to your use case and the media you actually expect to receive. The cited public evaluations do not establish vendor-specific answers about privacy, retention, latency, or update schedules, so verify those directly with each provider.
What do public comparisons show—and what don’t they show?
A March 2, 2026 preprint by Michael Rettinger, Ben Beaumont, Nhien-An Le-Khac, and Hong-Hanh Nguyen-Le evaluated six publicly accessible tools using authentic, tampered, and AI-generated images under a blinded protocol. The tools included forensic-analysis platforms InVID & WeVerify, FotoForensics, and Forensically, and AI classifiers DecopyAI, FaceOnLive, and Bitmind.

In that study’s image tasks and sample, forensic-analysis tools showed a high-recall, poor-specificity pattern, while AI classifiers showed the inverse pattern. Human evaluators substantially outperformed all the automated tools tested. This is a bounded result, not a current market-wide ranking: it does not establish how every image detector performs, or how these tools compare with video, audio, or enterprise systems. It does illustrate why a tool’s error pattern matters as much as the label it returns.
DeepSafe Bench, a public project repository, also cautions that detectors may generalize poorly to generators absent from their training and that a confident score is not evidence on its own. Its aggregate figures are project-specific, not a universal benchmark for the category.

Can deepfake detectors tell if a video is fake?
They can provide signals about a video when the tool is designed for video and has been evaluated on relevant video conditions. That is narrower than proving that a clip is fake. A still-image detector applied to a frame does not validate the full video, and an image benchmark does not establish performance on video or audio.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check whether evaluation covers the kind of footage in question, including realistic post-processing such as compression and resizing. A clip circulating on a social platform may have been re-encoded or edited, which can change the evidence available to a detector. If the consequences of a decision are significant, use the score to guide further examination rather than treating it as a verdict.

How to investigate a suspicious image or video
- Preserve the original and its context. Keep the file as received, note where and when it appeared, and retain relevant context. Avoid relying only on a screenshot or a copy that has been repeatedly compressed.
- Check available provenance. If the file has provenance or authentication information, validate what it can establish about the content history. Treat missing information as inconclusive.
- Select a tool for the actual input and claim. Use an image tool for an image or a video tool for a video, and confirm that the tool’s stated task matches the question you need answered.
- Read the result as a signal, not a binary truth. Find out what score or label means, whether the threshold is known, and what false positives and false negatives are possible for the relevant test conditions.
- Seek an independent signal. Consider separate evidence such as a validated provenance record, source context, or an appropriate second analysis. Two outputs are not truly independent if they rely on the same data or detection approach.
- Escalate consequential cases. Use trained human review and appropriate controls where a mistaken decision could harm someone. NIST’s identity-proofing guidance describes layered measures such as presentation-attack controls, sensor or injection controls, media analysis, and trained review, while noting that these controls do not address every possible attack.
What organizations should require before adopting a detector
- Independent, task-specific evaluation: Evidence for the modality, manipulation types, and operational setting you need—not just a general accuracy claim.
- Realistic and current test data: Coverage of post-processed evidence and newer generation methods, with clarity about whether the evaluation set was independent of training.
- Decision-level error disclosure: False-positive and false-negative rates at the proposed threshold, with the test sample and class mix explained.
- Defined human escalation: A procedure for reviewing uncertain results and handling cases where errors carry significant consequences.
- Operational and data-handling terms: Verified answers on file retention, privacy, access, latency, explainability, workflow integration, and update cadence.
- Retesting after change: A plan to reassess performance when the software changes or new generation and manipulation methods emerge.
NIST’s January 27, 2025 paper, Guardians of Forensic Evidence: Evaluating Analytic Systems Against AI-Generated Deepfakes, and the Guardians program emphasize validating analytic systems against realistic evidence and documenting expected errors. That is a stronger basis for adoption than choosing a tool solely because it returns a confident score.
