Start with the streaming site’s quality menu and the channel’s available feed. Choose Automatic if offered. If a channel only supplies a low-resolution picture, faster internet or a higher TV resolution cannot restore detail that is not in the source. When the source should be better, troubleshoot the specific symptom—buffering, a soft image, or motion judder—one change at a time.
Check the player setting and the channel’s source quality
Open the player settings and see which quality options are actually available. The menu can only select feeds and resolutions the service offers; it cannot create an HD or 4K version of a channel that is supplied in lower resolution. If the player has Automatic, use it first. Free TV’s official guidance recommends Automatic because it adapts to the connection and the definitions offered by the channel (Free Assistance). Its mobile and tablet options include Automatic, intermediate levels, and minimum quality; other services and TV apps may use different labels.

If one channel looks blurry or pixelated while other channels or apps look sharp, the channel’s feed or a service-specific problem is more likely than a fault with the whole home network. If everything looks poor, continue with the connection, device, and TV checks below.

Run the streaming provider’s connection test if it offers one, or use a reputable speed test on the TV or streaming device that is having trouble. A test on a phone in another room measures that phone’s connection, not necessarily the TV’s Wi-Fi. DAZN notes that its speed-test result applies to the device tested (DAZN Help).

Provider recommendations differ because they apply to particular services, devices, resolutions, and content. They are examples—not universal minimums or guarantees for free live-TV sites.
| Provider | Published connection recommendation | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | 3 Mbps or higher for 720p; 5 Mbps or higher for 1080p; 15 Mbps or higher for 4K | Netflix help-center recommendations; year not stated, checked 2026 (Netflix) |
| Peacock | 3 Mbps minimum generally; at least 8 Mbps for certain high-quality live events and UHD premium content | Peacock help-center recommendations; year not stated, checked 2026 (Peacock) |
| ITVX | 10 Mbps or more for stable streaming | ITVX help article modified 2025-11-04 (ITVX) |
| DAZN | About 16 Mbps for its highest 1080p definition; 9 Mbps for HD on TV or laptop; 3 Mbps for SD | DAZN help-center guidance; year not stated, checked 2026 (DAZN) |
These figures are each provider’s own recommendations, not results from an independent comparison. A speed that meets one provider’s guidance does not guarantee a particular resolution on another site. Live video can also be more sensitive to real-time connection interruptions than on-demand playback; DAZN says its live sports events need faster download speeds than its on-demand content.

Improve Wi-Fi before buying anything
If the connection test is poor or the stream keeps fluctuating, try these no-cost changes and retest after each:
- Pause large downloads and reduce the number of devices actively using the same network. Peacock identifies simultaneous use and large downloads as possible contributors to buffering (Peacock Help).
- Move the router and TV or streaming device closer together; if practical, test with them in the same room.
- Place the router in the open and off the floor, away from obstructions, enclosed cupboards, and other wireless devices or appliances (Netflix Help; DAZN Help).
- Restart the streaming device. If the problem remains, restart the modem and router according to their instructions.
If both your router and TV or streaming device support Ethernet and you can connect them, a wired test can help determine whether unstable Wi-Fi is the cause. DAZN recommends direct Ethernet as a troubleshooting step. A cable may make the connection more stable, but it will not increase the resolution the service or channel supplies.

If the image is soft, check device output and the HDMI chain
Confirm that the streaming service, TV, streaming box or stick, any receiver, the HDMI cable, and the selected HDMI port support the resolution or HDR format you want. Netflix notes that every device in the chain must support the target quality, and that device firmware, resolution settings, cable, or port capabilities can limit 4K or HDR (Netflix Help).
Set the streaming device’s output resolution to the target quality or higher when the device and display support it. This controls the signal sent to the TV; it does not add detail to a lower-resolution channel feed. Update the app and device software if updates are available, then check the player quality setting again.

If motion stutters or blurs, adjust motion processing
A picture that judders during movement or looks unnaturally blurred has a different likely cause from a consistently soft or pixelated image. Try disabling the TV’s motion interpolation or motion-smoothing setting, then compare the same scene. DAZN names settings such as Tru Motion, MotionFlow, and Auto Motion Plus in its troubleshooting guidance (DAZN Help). This is a symptom-specific test, not a general fix for low resolution.

ITVX says clearing cache and cookies or resetting its app may help with loading or buffering, and that it blocks VPN use (ITVX Help). Those instructions and restrictions are specific to ITVX; another service may behave differently. A VPN is not a picture-quality fix: it can add routing and latency, and some services block VPN traffic.
When to contact the service or your internet provider
If one app is failing while other services work, use that app’s support information to check for an outage or service-side issue. If multiple devices on the home network are affected, first check for an outage, then contact your internet provider if the issue continues. Netflix recommends telling the ISP whether one device or several are affected and whether the device connects by Wi-Fi or cable (Netflix Help).
For a focused diagnosis, note whether the problem is limited to one channel, one app, or every service; whether the symptom is softness, buffering, or motion judder; and the speed measured at the viewing device. That separates source-feed limits from connection, equipment, and picture-processing problems.
