Sometimes—but only if the specific game supports crossplay between the platforms and editions your group is using. A Steam co-op game does not automatically let you join its console or other PC-storefront versions. Steam Remote Play Together is a separate option for streaming supported local multiplayer to Steam Friends; it is not a general crossplay bridge.
What determines whether you can play together?
Co-op describes a game mode, not its network compatibility. The game’s developers determine which platform combinations can connect. A game may support Steam-to-console play but not every console pairing, or may describe “PC crossplay” without making clear whether that includes every PC storefront.

Check the exact game, platform pair, and edition against the game’s current official support information. Then verify the connection method and any account, version, server, or content requirements. The examples below illustrate why there is no single Steam-wide rule.

Native crossplay
Native crossplay is a feature of the game. If supported for your platform combination, players connect through the game’s own multiplayer system, which may use an account, in-game friend list, join code, or crossplay-enabled server.

Steam Remote Play Together
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Remote Play Together as streaming a supported local multiplayer session to Steam Friends. Only the host needs to own and install the game; invited players connect through Steam Remote Play. This can let friends play local co-op remotely, but it does not turn a Steam copy into a console copy or establish native crossplay with console players. Examples of game-specific crossplay requirements
Valheim
In its 2022 crossplay update announcement, Iron Gate said players could join across platforms. The announcement described using a join code for mixed-platform play and said dedicated-server hosts must enable crossplay for non-Steam players. It also cautioned that players should have the same patch version because a mismatch might prevent a connection. The announcement further said the crossplay server parameter uses PlayFab instead of Steamworks. These are details from that announcement, not a guarantee about every current version or platform pairing.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
2K’s Steam-hosted FAQ lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store for online crossplay. It says crossplay uses SHiFT Matchmaking, offers an opt-in prompt, and requires a Crossplay Display Name. This is one publisher’s implementation, not a Steam-wide requirement.

Farming Simulator 22
The game’s Steam-hosted FAQ describes crossplay among PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, and Stadia, and says player limits depend on the hosting platform. It also discusses restrictions involving mods and other installed content. Because the FAQ is historical and includes Stadia, its old platform list should not be read as evidence of current Stadia availability.

How to check before inviting your group
- Confirm the exact platform combination. Find an official game statement that names the platforms and, for PC, the relevant storefronts. Do not assume “PC crossplay” covers every PC edition.
- Check editions and updates. Compare the game edition and patch version everyone is running. Iron Gate’s Valheim announcement specifically warns that mismatched patches may prevent connection.
- Find the joining method. Check whether players use an external account and display name, an in-game friends list, a join code, or a crossplay-enabled server. For example, the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands FAQ specifies SHiFT Matchmaking, while the Valheim announcement describes a code for mixed-platform play.
- Review host and content rules. Some titles require the server host to enable crossplay. Check whether the host platform changes the party limit and whether mods, DLC, or other installed content must be compatible. Farming Simulator 22’s FAQ describes host-dependent limits and content restrictions.
- Verify current support. Use the game’s current official support page or in-game crossplay settings before buying or troubleshooting. Older announcements and FAQs may not reflect every current platform or update.
What to compare when choosing a game for a mixed-platform group
