Deepfake detection explained: how AI identifies manipulated media

Deepfake detection is not a single authenticity test. AI systems examine statistical and physical inconsistencies in pixels, video frames, faces, voices and, when available, provenance records. They may classify a file as suspicious, locate manipulated regions, compare a face with an identity, or reconstruct how a file was created and edited. Each task produces evidence with uncertainty, not an automatic declaration that a video is true or false.

The most dependable assessment combines the highest-quality original file, validated provenance, more than one technical analysis, and independent checks of the claim and event. A clean detector result does not prove authenticity, and a positive result is a lead that needs corroboration.

What a deepfake detector is actually trying to determine

“Is this video fake?” compresses several different forensic questions into one. NIST separates image-authenticity detection, face-swap identity verification, manipulation localization, source verification and provenance reconstruction. A system built for one question may be unsuitable for another.

Forensic task Question it answers Typical output
Authenticity detection Does the file contain signs of synthetic or altered content? A probability or confidence score for manipulation
Identity verification Does the face belong to the claimed person, and has it been replaced? A similarity or identity-match result
Manipulation localization Which pixels, frames, facial regions or audio segments were altered? A heat map, mask or marked time range
Source verification Where did the media originate, and is the claimed source plausible? A source match, mismatch or unresolved finding
Provenance reconstruction What creation and editing steps are recorded for this file? A signed history or a broken, missing or unverifiable chain

A detector can therefore identify a face swap without proving that the surrounding event happened, or validate a signed editing history without proving that the scene depicts what a caption claims.

How AI finds clues in manipulated media

Pixel, color and texture abnormalities

Feature-based systems look for engineered signals, while model-based systems learn statistical differences between genuine and manipulated examples. Signals can include inconsistent skin texture, resampling patterns, edge blending, unusual noise, or colors that do not fit a camera’s normal response. The U.S. Government Accountability Office gives color abnormalities as one example of a machine-detection signal.

Modern generators can reproduce many obvious cues, so a detector usually combines numerous weak measurements rather than relying on one tell. A face boundary that looks slightly too smooth, for example, matters more when it occurs with inconsistent lighting and an unusual compression pattern.

Face geometry and identity consistency

Face-swap systems must align a generated face with the head pose, expression and perspective of the source video. Detectors can examine landmarks around the eyes, mouth and jaw, compare motion across expressions, and test whether the apparent identity remains consistent from frame to frame. Identity verification is a separate task: a technically authentic recording can still show the wrong person, and a real person can appear in a video that has been edited around them.

Temporal consistency in video

Video gives a detector many more observations than a single image. It can test whether facial motion, lighting, reflections, edges, speech and frame-to-frame transitions fit a single physical capture. Flickering teeth, a mouth that moves out of sync with speech, a hairline that changes shape, or a reflection that fails to follow movement can become measurable temporal signals.

Systems sample frames and also inspect relationships between neighboring frames. An individual frame may look convincing while the sequence reveals unstable geometry or an abrupt transition. Conversely, a genuine recording with dropped frames, variable lighting or aggressive editing can look anomalous, so temporal evidence is not automatically proof of synthesis.

Audio and audiovisual agreement

Audio-capable detectors analyze voice characteristics, spectral patterns, splicing boundaries and transitions between phonemes. Multimodal systems compare the sound with visible mouth movement, timing and scene acoustics. A synthetic voice may be clean in isolation but fail to match the speaker’s lip movements or room sound. A dubbed or legitimately edited video can also create a mismatch without being a deepfake, which is why the detector’s task and threshold matter.

Metadata and file-level evidence

File metadata can reveal an export application, encoding history, timestamp or unusual edit sequence. Metadata is easy to remove or rewrite, however, and social platforms commonly transcode uploads. It is supporting evidence rather than a self-authenticating label.

What happens inside a detection pipeline

  1. Ingest and preserve the file. The system records the file hash, format, dimensions, frame rate, audio streams and any available metadata. Analysis of a downloaded, recompressed copy may differ from analysis of the original.
  2. Preprocess the media. Frames may be sampled, faces detected and aligned, audio separated, and resolution normalized. Every transformation can discard evidence, so a defensible workflow keeps the untouched original.
  3. Extract signals. A model measures pixel statistics, color, texture, facial geometry, motion, audio characteristics, synchronization and other learned features.
  4. Classify or compare. The system compares those features with patterns learned from genuine and manipulated examples, or compares a face with a reference identity. The result is normally a calibrated score, not a binary fact.
  5. Localize and explain. Some systems identify suspicious frames, regions or audio intervals. A localization map can guide a human review but may be less reliable than the overall classification.
  6. Report uncertainty and version. A useful report preserves the score, threshold, model version, input hash, preprocessing settings and known limitations. NIST’s OpenMFC deepfake-detection task requires a confidence score for every probe, reflecting the probabilistic nature of the output.

Why a detector can be right in a lab and wrong online

New generators create a moving target

A model trained on yesterday’s synthesis methods can learn generator-specific fingerprints instead of a general definition of “fake.” NIST’s Guardians of Forensic Evidence program evaluates whether systems generalize to newer generators rather than only to familiar test sets. A result should therefore identify the model and test conditions, not merely report a percentage.

Compression, resizing and blur alter the clues

Messaging apps, social networks and video editors resize, blur and recompress media. These operations can hide a manipulation artifact or create a pattern that resembles one. NIST evaluations explicitly test robustness after blur, compression and anti-forensics processing. A score obtained from a pristine laboratory file should not be assumed to transfer to a social-media copy.

Attackers can optimize against detectors

Anti-forensics processing can be designed to suppress the cues a detector uses. Small edits, cropping, frame removal or re-encoding may change the score without changing the apparent story. Microsoft Research describes this as a reason to combine forensic classification with provenance, watermarking and fingerprinting rather than treating any one signal as definitive.

Scores are evidence, not verdicts

A probability depends on the model, its training data, the input quality and the threshold selected by the operator. “No detection” means that the system found no supported signal under those conditions; it does not mean the file is authentic. A high score means the file resembles the model’s manipulated examples; it still requires examination of the claim, source and chain of custody.

Content Credentials and provenance: a different kind of evidence

Forensic detection asks whether content looks altered. Provenance asks where it came from and what happened to it. C2PA Content Credentials use signed manifests to record origin and edits when participating cameras, applications or publishing tools create and preserve them. A validator checks the signature and whether later edits fit the recorded chain.

What a valid credential can establish

  • Which participating tool or account created or edited the asset, under the identity and security assumptions recorded in the manifest.
  • Which declared actions occurred, such as cropping, color adjustment or export.
  • Whether the manifest has been cryptographically altered or detached from the file.

Microsoft Research states that a C2PA provenance manifest created and signed in a high-security environment can enable high-confidence validation. Microsoft also describes imperceptible watermarking and soft-hash fingerprinting as complementary methods. These signals can help connect a file to its origin even when visible pixels change.

What credentials cannot establish

A missing credential is not proof that media is fake. Many cameras, editors, platforms and reposting workflows do not attach or preserve credentials. A valid credential also does not prove that the depicted event occurred as claimed; it validates the recorded chain, not the truth of the scene or caption. An authentic camera can record a staged event, and a genuine file can be paired with a false description.

Can humans spot a deepfake?

People can notice useful anomalies: a face boundary, lighting that changes unexpectedly, a voice transition, a strange reflection or an edit that does not fit the surrounding sequence. They can also check context that an image model cannot, such as whether the claimed location, date and participants make sense.

Human judgment is not conclusive authentication. A 2021 study involving 15,016 participants found that ordinary observers and a leading computer-vision detector were similarly accurate overall, while making different kinds of mistakes. Human review and machine scores are therefore complementary, not interchangeable. A person may catch a contextual contradiction that a model misses, while a model may detect a statistical pattern too subtle for visual inspection.

A practical workflow for checking suspicious video

  1. Preserve the best available original. Save the file without re-exporting it, record where and when you obtained it, and calculate a hash if the matter may become legal, investigative or reputational. Keep the URL or message context separately from the media file.
  2. Inspect provenance first. Look for C2PA Content Credentials or another signed record. Verify the signature and review each creation and edit entry. Record whether the chain is complete, broken or simply absent.
  3. Test the claim independently. Compare the caption with contemporaneous reporting, the original uploader, known timestamps, eyewitness material and other recordings. Search for earlier versions rather than relying on a repost’s date.
  4. Review visual continuity. Examine face boundaries, teeth, eyes, hair, lighting, reflections, shadows, object edges and frame-to-frame motion. Slow playback and enlarged crops can reveal a lead, but do not treat a visual oddity alone as proof.
  5. Review audio and synchronization. Check lip-sync, voice transitions, room acoustics and abrupt cuts. Separate a legitimate dub or edit from evidence that the speaker’s identity or words were synthesized.
  6. Use independent technical analysis for high-stakes cases. Run more than one detector, or engage a qualified forensic service, especially when a decision could affect safety, elections, employment, money or a person’s reputation. Retain each score, model and version, input hash, processing setting and uncertainty.

When tools disagree, preserve the disagreement and investigate why: they may address different modalities, use different thresholds or react differently to compression. Do not average scores into a number that no method actually reported.

How to evaluate a detector or forensic service

Choose a system against the decision you need to make, not against a marketing claim. Check these dimensions before relying on an output:

  • Modality: image, video, audio or all three.
  • Task: classification, manipulation localization, identity verification or provenance validation.
  • Generalization: performance on generators and editing methods absent from training data.
  • Robustness: behavior after platform compression, resizing, blur, cropping and other edits.
  • Calibration: whether confidence scores correspond to observed error rates and include uncertainty.
  • Explainability: whether the service identifies frames, regions or audio segments that a reviewer can inspect.
  • Speed and scale: whether analysis is practical for a single investigation or a large archive.
  • Privacy: retention, reuse, deletion and jurisdiction for uploaded media.
  • Forensic repeatability: whether another examiner can reproduce the result with the same file, model version and settings, and whether the report is suitable for the relevant legal process.

What current benchmarks say about reliability

NIST’s Guardians of Forensic Evidence program identifies a gap between impressive research accuracy and ease of use in real forensic work. Its evaluations target newer generators and post-processing because those conditions determine whether a method survives outside a controlled dataset.

The Microsoft-Northwestern-WITNESS benchmark, published by Microsoft Research in 2026, contains more than 50,000 image, video and audio artifacts. It includes expert-annotated suspicious media from real-world contexts and adversarial examples, exposing failures that narrow laboratory collections can miss.

These benchmarks do not turn a detector into an oracle. They show how a method behaves on a defined collection under defined scoring rules. A newsroom, investigator or platform still needs to document the input, processing history and uncertainty for the specific file under review.

How to interpret common results

“Likely manipulated”

Treat this as a prioritized lead. Inspect the flagged frames or audio, compare another detector, check provenance and seek an original upload or independent recording. Do not publish an accusation based only on a score.

“No manipulation detected”

Read this as “no supported signal found under this test.” It may reflect a genuine file, a generator outside the model’s experience, heavy recompression, an input that lacks enough frames or audio, or a manipulation that leaves weak traces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Credentials valid”

Confirm what the manifest actually covers. It may authenticate the camera or editing chain while saying nothing about whether the event was staged, the caption is accurate or the person consented.

“Credentials unavailable”

Record the absence without converting it into a fake label. Continue with source checks, technical analysis and independent corroboration.

The defensible conclusion

AI identifies deepfakes by combining learned statistical patterns with physical and temporal checks across pixels, frames, faces and audio. Provenance systems add a signed account of origin and edits, while humans add contextual reasoning. None of these layers is sufficient in every case. The strongest conclusion is the one that states exactly what was tested, preserves the file and chain of custody, reports uncertainty, and corroborates the claimed event with independent evidence.
