DeepFaceLive is an open-source Windows program documented to replace a person’s face in webcam or video input in real time, including for livestreams and video calls. The project’s GitHub repository was archived on November 13, 2024, so its published capabilities and hardware guidance should not be taken as proof of current support or compatibility.
What is DeepFaceLive?
DeepFaceLive is a PC face-swapping application. Its archived project repository describes processing webcam or video input and using face models to replace a face. The software also includes a separate Face Animator module, which is intended to animate a face rather than simply replace it.

The project documentation points to setup instructions for streaming and video calls. That describes intended use; it does not establish that the program currently works with every streaming app, camera, or operating-system configuration.
Can it change your face during a livestream?
According to the archived project documentation, yes: DeepFaceLive was designed for real-time face replacement in streaming contexts. The README says streaming at 25 frames per second with Face Animator requires a GPU rated at 35 TFLOPS, and recommends an RTX 2070 or newer or a Radeon RX 5700 XT or newer.

These figures and card recommendations are the project’s own dated guidance, not independent benchmarks or a guarantee of performance on a particular computer. The repository’s archived status also means they should not be treated as current compatibility advice.
What are the risks of real-time face swapping?
Face swapping can be used for consensual creative work, but the same capability can enable deception or impersonation. In a September 2021 report, Futurism described concerns about non-consensual use and biometric spoofing. Henry Adjer, then identified as head of communications and research analysis at Deeptrace, said: “This could range from adult streamers ‘wearing’ celebrities’ faces without consent, to biometric spoofing such as fooling facial recognition and liveness detection systems.” Those are risks he identified, not evidence that every such misuse occurred.

The AIAAIC DeepFaceLive entry, last updated in December 2024, catalogs concerns including fraud, privacy violations, misinformation, and non-consensual explicit content. A risk catalog is not, by itself, verification that each listed harm was caused by this specific program.
Is DeepFaceLive still maintained?
No. The project owner archived the GitHub repository on November 13, 2024; an archived repository is read-only. The repository remains useful for understanding what the software documented, but the archive does not confirm ongoing development, current support, or the status of any successor project.

Historical coverage helps explain the tool’s intended audience: Futurism’s September 2021 report quoted YouTuber Vladislav Pedro, via The Daily Dot, saying the software could be used by streamers and creators of other media. That description should be read as contemporary commentary, not an endorsement or assurance about present-day usability.
