Those are allegations and opinions from unnamed former staffers—not independently established findings. The contemporaneous reporting also counted departures, but does not show that everyone who left shared the same reasons.
What former xAI employees said
Futurism’s February 14, 2026 report by Victor Tangermann relayed accounts from former xAI staffers who spoke to The Verge. The available coverage presents their statements as personal assessments, not as measured evaluations of xAI’s products or organizational practices. Futurism’s report

One former employee said the team was moving quickly but had not achieved a major advance over competitors: “Although we were iterating really fast, we were never able to get to a point like, ‘Oh, we’ve made a step function change over what OpenAI or Anthropic or other companies had released.” The comment describes that employee’s perception; it is not a technical comparison based on published benchmarks.

Another former employee put the criticism more bluntly: “Trying to do what OpenAI was doing a year ago is not how you beat OpenAI,” the staffer said, according to Futurism’s account. Together, the remarks suggest dissatisfaction with what employees saw as a catch-up strategy, but do not establish how xAI’s work compared across products or over time.
#1 Best Overall
- ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT DESIGN: The mobile standing desk promotes a healthier workstyle by allowing quick transitions between sitting and standing. The gas spring lift smoothly adjusts the height from 28.3in to 44in, supporting better posture and reducing neck and back strain during long working hours. This portable desk improves daily comfort and productivity across different environments.
- SUPERIOR STABILITY AND DURABILITY: The rolling desk adjustable height model stands out with its sturdy H shaped steel base and reinforced structure, providing stability even at maximum extension. The waterproof and scratch resistant MDF desktop ensures long lasting use, while the retractable keyboard tray and hook create organized storage for accessories. This unique design differentiates the desk from standard folding table or rolling podium options on the market.
- ERGONOMIC AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN: The portable standing desk offers a spacious 25.6 x 17.7in surface to accommodate a laptop, monitor, or books. A dedicated slot holds phones and tablets, while the 23.6 x 11.8in keyboard tray supports a full size keyboard and mouse. The thoughtful structure allows the small standing desk to serve as a side table, study cart, or computer desk with keyboard tray in living rooms, bedrooms, and offices.
- EASY MOBILITY WITH LOCKABLE WHEELS: The adjustable rolling desk includes four caster wheels that allow smooth movement between rooms. The lockable function secures the desk in place when needed, creating flexibility for use as a rolling laptop desk, classroom furniture, or teacher standing desk. The compact rolling table design makes the desk on wheels easy to move, while maintaining stability during presentations or study sessions.
- EASY OPERATION AND LOW MAINTENANCE: The sit stand desk is operated with a simple hand lever that activates the gas spring for smooth upward adjustment, while gentle pressure lowers the surface. The mobile desk workstation requires minimal maintenance, as the MDF board is waterproof, scratch resistant, and easy to clean with a damp cloth. This reliable raising desk minimizes user effort and ensures long term durability without complex upkeep.
What they alleged about safety
Former employees also criticized the company’s approach to safety. One source characterized the organization by saying, “There is zero safety whatsoever in the company — not in the image [model], not in the chatbot,” while another described safety as “a dead org at xAI.” These are serious allegations from unnamed former staffers; the reporting available here does not independently verify the state of xAI’s safety organization or establish that every employee shared this view.

How many people were reported to be leaving?
In coverage published February 14, 2026, TechCrunch said at least 11 engineers and two co-founders had announced departures during that week. This is a dated count from contemporaneous reporting, not a current headcount or proof that the departing employees had the same reasons for leaving.

One former employee offered a broader description of the workplace pressure: “You survive by shutting up and doing what Elon wants,” the staffer said, as quoted by Futurism. The remark is an unnamed source’s account of the culture, not a finding about every worker’s experience.

What the reporting establishes—and what it does not
The reports establish that some former employees voiced concerns about safety and technical direction, and that multiple departures were reported in the week of February 14, 2026. They do not establish a measured prevalence of burnout, prove that the alleged safety shortcomings occurred as described, or show that the departures were all caused by those concerns.
The claims are relayed by Futurism and TechCrunch from The Verge’s reporting; the original Verge report was not directly available in the reviewed material. The available coverage also does not provide a named former employee or an official xAI response to these specific statements. Musk was described as characterizing changes as a reorganization, but the available source material does not include a direct statement that would support a fuller comparison of that explanation with the former employees’ accounts.
