Epic Games’ 2023 MetaHuman Animator demonstration showed how video of a facial performance could be turned into animation for a digital human. The demo featured Melina Juergens, known for her performance as Senua in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. It looked strikingly lifelike to some observers, but “uncanny valley” is an interpretation—not a reaction measured in a controlled audience study.
What did Epic demonstrate?
At the Game Developers Conference in March 2023, Epic presented MetaHuman Animator, a workflow for translating recorded facial performance into animation for MetaHuman characters. The Verge reported that the demonstration used video captured on an iPhone. It was a preview of technology Epic planned to launch in summer 2023; that was the plan reported at the time, not confirmation of current availability or product details. The performer was Melina Juergens, whose performance is associated with Senua in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. The demonstration showed her facial performance applied both to a MetaHuman resembling her and to another MetaHuman. That illustrates the transfer shown on stage; it does not establish that this precise workflow produced every face in the finished game. Futurism’s March 24, 2023 coverage

Ars Technica described the result as nearly indistinguishable from the original video. That is a journalist’s characterization of a demonstration, not a lab measurement or proof that all viewers would judge it the same way. The uncanny-valley label in the headline captures one possible response to highly lifelike digital faces; the cited reports do not present a controlled study of audience reactions.

- Unique Handmade Design: Exquisitely crafted Onion Knight figurine, perfect for collectors.
- High-Quality Materials: Made from pla plastic with detailed hand-painted finish.
- Perfect Gift for Gamers: Ideal for birthdays, holidays, or any occasion for fans of the series.
- Compact Size: 5.5 inches in height, great for display on shelves, desks, or gaming setups.
The demo’s realism also depended on more than a phone recording alone. Ars Technica reported that Epic used machine learning and facial landmarks, drawing on what Epic VP of Digital Humans Technology Vladimir Mastilovic called “a large, varied, highly curated database” of facial-capture data. Ars Technica’s March 23, 2023 account
What did the reported processing time mean?
For one on-stage example, Ars Technica reported that a 15-second performance by Juergens was captured using a stock iPhone on a tripod and processed in under a minute on a high-end AMD machine. That is a result from a specific demonstration setup—not a general speed guarantee for other footage, computers, or production workflows.

The reporting does not provide a controlled comparison against specialized capture equipment or competing systems, nor does it establish how much human cleanup would be needed in a finished production. The demonstration therefore shows what Epic presented as possible, rather than proving that phone capture replaces every stage of professional facial animation.
What the 2023 reports do—and don’t—tell us
- Established: Epic demonstrated a way to turn facial-performance video into animation for MetaHuman characters at GDC in March 2023.
- Reported, not universal: One 15-second demo took under a minute to process on a high-end AMD machine.
- Not established by these reports: The tool’s current name, availability, terms, feature set, hardware requirements, or how it was used for every face in Hellblade II.
Ars Technica also reported Epic’s figure of “over 1 million users” who had created millions of MetaHumans since the platform’s 2021 launch. That is a company-reported statistic as of the March 2023 article, not a current user count. Mastilovic also said the technology “has literally changed how [testers] work or the kind of work they can take on,” as quoted in the same report.
