Choose cloud interconnect when a cloud VPC or VNet is the main endpoint, dedicated DCI when you control two facilities and move predictable bulk traffic, and dark fiber when nearby sites justify owning the optical path and equipment. The right decision depends on endpoint geography, traffic shape, required capacity, failure behavior, operational ownership and the complete cost—not on bandwidth alone.
This guide separates the three architectures, shows where each fits, and gives a procurement and design process you can use for hybrid cloud, replication, backup, analytics and data-center consolidation.

Start with the endpoint and traffic pattern
Identify what must connect before comparing products. An on-premises network reaching a cloud region has different constraints from two company-owned data centers in the same metro. Cloud-to-cloud traffic introduces provider interconnect rules, while a facility-to-facility link may depend on meet-me rooms, building entrances and the physical route between sites.
- On-premises to a cloud VPC or VNet: cloud interconnect is usually the natural starting point because the provider supplies private routing, cloud-side configuration and documented high-availability patterns.
- Two facilities you operate or control: dedicated DCI is appropriate when you need a predictable, high-volume private circuit and can engineer diverse paths.
- Nearby facilities with sustained, very large flows: dark fiber can deliver physical-path control and low latency, provided your team or optical-network partner can operate the transmission equipment.
- Several clouds or partners: a managed exchange or fabric can centralize connections and allow on-demand turn-up instead of ordering a separate physical design for every relationship.
Measure the workload first. Use network telemetry to record average throughput, peak throughput, burst duration, packet loss, latency and the traffic required when one path fails. AWS guidance recommends provisioning adequate bandwidth from internal monitoring data rather than from a theoretical application estimate.

What the three options actually provide
Dedicated DCI
Dedicated data-center interconnect is a private physical connection between data centers, or between an on-premises network and a cloud or provider network. Google describes Dedicated Interconnect as a direct physical connection to its network intended for transferring large amounts of data. You obtain a circuit or port, arrange the cross-connect and carrier tail where required, and operate the routing and attached equipment on your side.
This model is well suited to storage replication, backup, disaster recovery and data-center consolidation. It offers predictable capacity, but you must justify the circuit, engineer redundancy and coordinate facilities, carriers and cloud or colocation providers.
Cloud interconnect
Cloud interconnect is provider-integrated private connectivity to a cloud VPC or VNet, or between cloud environments. Google states that Cloud Interconnect provides low-latency, high-availability connectivity without sending traffic across the public internet. AWS describes Interconnect as managed private connectivity from locations to AWS and between cloud environments, including multicloud and last-mile offerings.

The provider handles part of the physical and cloud-side integration, while you still configure virtual circuits, routing, security controls and on-premises equipment. This reduces physical-network work compared with a self-managed fiber path and makes the option practical when a cloud region is the primary endpoint.
Dark fiber
Dark fiber is leased, unlit fiber. You—or an optical-network operator working for you—supply the transceivers, optical transport, routing, monitoring and maintenance. Equinix positions it for low-latency, high-bandwidth paths between nearby data centers.

How to match an option to the workload
Replication and disaster recovery
Replication generates sustained traffic and makes packet loss, jitter and failover capacity more important than a short burst peak. Dedicated DCI is a strong fit when both sites are under your control. Cloud interconnect fits when the recovery site is a cloud region and you want private provider routing. Dark fiber is compelling only when the sites are close, the route is reliable and you can operate the optical layer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Backup and archive movement
Backup windows benefit from predictable throughput. Compare the amount of data created per hour with the usable capacity after protocol overhead, encryption and reserved headroom. A cloud interconnect avoids public-internet exposure when the destination is object or block storage in a cloud. Dedicated DCI can be economical for two large, steady sites; dark fiber makes sense when utilization is consistently high enough to offset optics and maintenance.
AI and analytics data movement
Training and analytics pipelines often move large datasets in bursts. Determine whether bursts are daily, seasonal or continuous. Cloud interconnect is convenient when compute clusters span cloud networks. A dedicated circuit or dark fiber path may be justified when repeated transfers keep a link busy for long periods and application performance depends on stable latency.
Interactive hybrid applications
For user-facing applications that call services across a hybrid boundary, private routing reduces internet hops and exposure, but the decisive metrics are round-trip latency, jitter, packet loss and maximum transmission unit. Cloud interconnect generally requires less physical coordination than a new dark-fiber route. Use dark fiber only when the facilities are close and the application’s latency target warrants owning the path.

Capacity planning that survives failure
Start with telemetry from the existing workload. Record average and 95th- or 99th-percentile rates if your monitoring system provides them, then add protocol, encryption and growth headroom. Size the design for the traffic that must continue when one connection, device or facility is unavailable—not merely for normal-day throughput.

Google recommends redundant Dedicated Interconnect connections with enough capacity for failover. AWS documents a four-connection model for multicloud and last-mile Interconnect designs. Apply the same principle to any architecture: separate paths, separate devices and, where feasible, separate buildings or carrier routes.
For Google environments, current documentation lists 100-Gbps Dedicated Interconnect circuits. Cross-Cloud Interconnect capacity is documented in 10-Gbps, 100-Gbps and 400-Gbps increments depending on the connected provider. Those increments are service options, not a promise that every region or partner offers every speed; verify regional limits before ordering.
Latency, jitter and physical diversity
Private interconnects reduce the number of uncontrolled internet hops, but they do not erase distance or congestion inside a provider. Map the metro, cloud region and colocation meet-me room for each endpoint. A short dark-fiber route can offer excellent latency, while a longer managed interconnect may be easier to deploy and protect.
Ask carriers and facilities how diversity is defined. Two circuits entering the same building duct or sharing a single cross-connect room are not fully independent. Document entrances, conduits, power domains, edge routers and optical paths, then test traffic behavior after deliberately disabling each component.

Provisioning and operational ownership
Managed cloud interconnect
Provider-integrated services reduce the amount of physical-network work, but lead times still vary. Google’s comparison states that Cross-Cloud Interconnect physical provisioning typically takes 1–4 weeks. A documented partner option can provision in minutes where that service is available. Treat those times as service-specific: confirm the region, partner, port speed, approval steps and installation appointment in the order process.
Dedicated circuits
Expect coordination among the cloud or data-center operator, a carrier, the colocation facility and your network team. Plan for cross-connect orders, carrier tails, port reservations, routing sessions, maintenance windows and acceptance testing. Keep an inventory of circuit identifiers and demarcation points so a fault can be isolated quickly.
Dark fiber operations
Specify the exact route, fiber pair, splice points, optical budget, transceiver type, monitoring method, repair service-level agreement and spare inventory. Decide who performs loopback tests, cleans connectors, replaces optics and dispatches a field technician. Equinix’s IBX cross-connect orders have supported single-mode fiber as the sole media type since March 31, 2024; confirm the current facility rule and connector requirements for your order.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build the complete cost model
Do not compare a monthly port price with a dark-fiber lease and call the cheaper number the winner. Include every recurring and one-time component:
- Cloud or provider port charges and virtual-circuit fees.
- Cross-connects, colocation space and carrier tails between the facility and the interconnect.
- Optical transceivers, transport shelves, routers, power and spare equipment.
- Installation, engineering, monitoring, support and break-fix labor.
- Cloud data-transfer charges and any metering specific to the region or provider path.
- Redundant links and the additional facilities needed for physical diversity.
AWS describes Interconnect pricing as hourly and says there are no separate data-transfer charges within the model described in its documentation. That statement is not a universal pricing rule: verify the exact AWS region, connected provider and traffic direction before building a business case.

Implementation procedure
- Measure demand. Export peak, average and failover traffic from network telemetry. Separate replication, backup, interactive and bursty flows so one workload does not hide another.
- Map endpoints. List on-premises sites, data centers, cloud regions, VPCs or VNets, partner networks, metros and available colocation meet-me rooms.
- Set technical targets. Record maximum latency, acceptable jitter and packet loss, MTU, encryption requirements, routing policy and compliance constraints.
- Draft two failure-independent paths. Use separate facilities, devices and physical routes where possible. Calculate the capacity remaining after one path fails and test that the result meets the workload target.
- Request comparable quotes. Price ports, circuits, cross-connects, carrier tails, optics, colocation, support, cloud transfer and engineering as separate line items.
- Engineer the selected option. For dark fiber, document the route, optical budget, transceivers, monitoring, repair SLA and spares. For cloud interconnect, document virtual circuits, VLAN or attachment limits, routing sessions and provider prerequisites.
- Validate before production. Test throughput, latency, jitter, packet loss, MTU, failover convergence and monitoring alerts. Record the demarcation and escalation contacts, then recheck regional limits, supported speeds, provisioning times and commercial terms immediately before ordering.
Common failure modes and corrections
The link is fast but the workload is still slow
Check encryption overhead, MTU mismatches, TCP windowing, storage throughput and single-threaded application limits. A larger circuit cannot fix a bottleneck inside the host, router or storage system.
Redundancy fails during an outage
Inspect whether both links share a conduit, cross-connect room, router, power domain or carrier. Recalculate failover capacity using measured traffic, not the nominal port rate, and perform a controlled shutdown test.
Dark fiber has intermittent errors
Check connector cleanliness, optical levels, patching, transceiver compatibility and the route’s optical budget. Use loopback and light-level tests to identify whether the fault is in customer equipment, the cross-connect or the leased plant.

Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
- Select dedicated DCI if you control both endpoints, move predictable high volumes and can fund circuit and resiliency engineering.
- Select cloud interconnect if a cloud VPC or VNet is central, traffic must remain private, or provider-integrated multicloud routing reduces operational effort.
- Select dark fiber if nearby facilities offer a viable route, utilization is large and steady, and you can own optical equipment, monitoring and maintenance.
- Select a managed exchange or fabric when many clouds or partners must connect and on-demand provisioning is more valuable than owning every physical path.
