The table explains why calling Deadlock simply “3D Dota” is misleading. The games share a lane-and-objective skeleton, but Deadlock makes your hands manage crosshair placement and shooter movement while Dota 2 makes the battlefield, timing and ability choices the primary interface.
What Deadlock is right now
An unfinished, invite-limited game
Valve’s current Deadlock listing identifies an early-development build rather than a conventional full release. Valve warns that the game contains temporary art and experimental gameplay. Access is limited to friend invites sent through people already participating in the playtest, and the listing gives no release date beyond saying it is to be announced.

That means a player cannot assume that a publicly available download, a paid edition or an open queue exists. If you do not have an invitation, the sensible expectation is that you may have to wait. Valve’s listing also still shows system requirements as to be determined, so hardware compatibility cannot be inferred from Dota 2’s requirements or from the current visuals.
A shooter layered over a MOBA framework
Steam’s user-defined tags include both MOBA and Third-Person Shooter. The combination describes the important experience-level distinction: you control a hero from behind rather than primarily issuing commands from a distant strategic view, and your attacks depend on aiming and positioning in three-dimensional space.
The current third-party Deadlock mechanics reference describes the surrounding structure as familiar to MOBA players. Troopers advance through lanes, players collect souls, souls are spent on items and hero progression, and teams push through defensive structures and other objectives toward an enemy Patron. Ziplines connect the base and lanes, adding a dedicated way to move between the safe starting area and the active parts of the map.

Deadlock is still changing, so a mechanic that is central today can be adjusted, renamed or removed before release.
Why the development label changes the comparison
In a released game, you can choose a guide, learn a stable ruleset and build habits that survive from one season to the next. Deadlock currently offers less certainty. Art, balance, objective behavior and progression can be experimental, and access itself can change when Valve updates the playtest.
Valve’s official Gameplay Update dated May 22, 2026 illustrates that volatility. It documents changes involving Medic trooper healing, structure resistances, Mid-Boss behavior and souls. The update is evidence that concrete rules are still being tuned; it is not a complete manual for every match.

Valve’s established action-RTS model
Valve presents Dota 2 as a multiplayer action RTS. That description puts strategy and real-time decision-making at the center: you select a hero, coordinate with teammates, manage abilities and items, and contest objectives across lanes while trying to destroy the opposing Ancient.

The game’s identity is built around controlling a hero in a large strategic system rather than around a crosshair-led combat loop.
A released free-to-play game
Valve’s listing gives Dota 2 a July 9, 2013 release date and describes it as free to play. Valve also says all heroes and core content are available to play without buying individual heroes. Cosmetics and other add-ons are presented as collectable extras, so the competitive starting line is not locked behind a hero purchase.
That does not mean Dota 2 is simple or static. It has accumulated years of hero, item and balance design. The useful contrast with Deadlock is maturity: Dota 2 has an established public release and a known access model, whereas Deadlock’s current listing is still a limited playtest.
Camera and combat: aiming versus battlefield control
What you physically do in Deadlock
Deadlock’s third-person shooter tag has a practical consequence. You must steer the camera, place shots and move your hero through three-dimensional space while also tracking the lane and objective game. Elevation, cover, sightlines and travel routes matter because your own hands determine where the hero is looking and how attacks connect.
The shooter layer does not remove MOBA decisions. You still need to judge when to farm, when to spend souls, when to help a lane and when a structure or larger objective is worth contesting. The difference is that those decisions are made while aiming and moving, not from a primarily strategic viewpoint.

What Dota 2 asks you to manage
Dota 2’s action-RTS framing shifts attention toward the hero’s role, ability timing, item choices, lane pressure and team coordination. Mechanical execution still matters, but the cited Valve descriptions do not present it as a third-person shooter. You should not expect Deadlock’s direct-aiming demands to map one-for-one onto Dota 2’s control priorities.
Neither model is automatically harder or better. A player who enjoys reticle control and movement may find Deadlock’s interaction natural, while a player who prefers planning around abilities, items and timing may value Dota 2’s strategic emphasis. Those are preference-based inferences from the documented designs, not an objective difficulty ranking.
Lanes, farming and objectives
Deadlock’s documented match loop
The current mechanics reference describes a sequence that will look familiar to MOBA players:
- Troopers advance through lanes. Their waves create a moving front line and a recurring reason to visit each lane.
- You collect souls. Souls function as the current currency used for purchases and hero progression.
- You buy and improve your build. Spending souls turns successful lane activity into stronger combat options.
- Your team pushes defensive objectives. Progress is not only about defeating opposing heroes; structures and other objectives stand between your team and the enemy base.
- The objective chain leads toward the Patron. The Patron is the endpoint described by the current reference, so lane pressure eventually has to become objective progress.
This loop explains why Deadlock is more than a conventional team shooter. Eliminating an opponent can create space, but the lasting value comes from converting that space into souls, safer lanes and damaged or destroyed objectives.
Dota 2’s Ancient-centered objective
Valve’s official Dota 2 website identifies defending the Ancient as the core objective. Heroes and items support that objective, and the broad roster gives teams different ways to create pressure, protect key areas and finish a push.
The shared principle is objective conversion: winning an encounter matters because it can open a route toward the enemy’s base. The interaction differs, however. Deadlock’s documented loop adds shooter movement, souls and ziplines to the lane process, while Valve’s Dota 2 description emphasizes the established hero-and-item strategy around the Ancient.

Movement and map navigation
Deadlock’s ziplines
Ziplines are the clearest movement-system detail supplied for Deadlock. The current mechanics reference says they connect the base and lanes, giving players a defined travel route between the starting area and active fronts. In practical terms, movement is part of both combat and macro play: choosing when to leave a lane, how quickly to return and which route to take can affect farming and objective timing.

Because Deadlock is viewed from behind the hero, travel also interacts with aiming and positioning. A route is not merely a strategic arrow on a map; it is space your character occupies while threats can approach from different directions.
What can and cannot be claimed about Dota 2 movement
The cited Valve descriptions do not provide a directly comparable summary of Dota 2’s movement system. It is therefore safer to compare the documented presence of Deadlock’s ziplines with Dota 2’s objective and item framework than to invent a feature-by-feature traversal comparison.

Deadlock’s souls-based progression
In the current Deadlock reference, souls are both a reward from play and a resource for purchases and hero progression. This creates a direct connection between lane activity and your build: collecting souls gives you the means to select stronger or more suitable options, while spending them determines how your hero develops during the match.
The exact item slots, catalog, costs and patch rules are not established by the supplied sources. Treat any detailed build guide as version-sensitive, especially while Valve continues to change mechanics.

Dota 2’s roster and item variety
Valve highlights Dota 2’s large pool of heroes, roles and abundant items. Every hero is available to play without a separate purchase, so experimentation is part of the free-to-play offer rather than a progression gate.
The two games therefore frame build choice differently in the evidence available here. Deadlock’s current description makes souls and in-match progression prominent; Dota 2’s official offer emphasizes the breadth of its hero and item ecosystem. If you want to play Deadlock
- You need access through the current invite-based playtest route.

- Do not assume published Dota 2 hardware requirements apply; Deadlock’s listing still marks system requirements as to be determined.
If you want to play Dota 2
- The game is released and listed as free to play.
- Valve says all heroes and core content are available without buying heroes.
- Cosmetics and add-ons are optional collectables rather than requirements for access to the hero roster.
This is the clearest practical dividing line. Deadlock is something you may be able to test if an invitation reaches you; Dota 2 is the immediately available, established option in Valve’s cited listings.
What the available evidence does not establish
A careful comparison should leave several tempting claims out. The supplied sources do not establish current team sizes, average match duration, ranked-mode structure, an exact map layout, every prerequisite in the win condition, comparative difficulty, esports status or finalized system requirements for Deadlock.

Which game fits your priorities?
Deadlock is the better match if you want
