Deadlock Performance Fixes for Low FPS, Stuttering, and Crashes

If Deadlock is running slowly, stuttering, or crashing, start by identifying which symptom you have, then try reversible settings changes one at a time. Valve’s general Steam guidance recommends resetting video and performance settings with -autoconfig and adjusting graphics gradually, but it does not establish that this will fix a particular Deadlock problem.

Keep a short record as you troubleshoot. Write down the game version or most recent update, resolution, display mode, graphics API if Deadlock shows one, and what the symptom looks like. This prevents a long list of changes from becoming impossible to undo and gives Steam Support useful context if you need to escalate the problem.

First, identify what is going wrong

“Deadlock performance” can describe several different experiences. Low average frame rate, uneven frame delivery, and a process that exits are not interchangeable problems. Classifying the symptom first helps you choose a sensible test and avoids assuming that a new graphics card, a launch flag, or one setting must be responsible.

  • Persistently low FPS: the frame rate remains low across most of a match or scene. The game may feel consistently slow rather than stopping briefly.
  • Stuttering: short pauses, hitching, or uneven frame delivery interrupt otherwise playable performance. A match can have an acceptable average FPS and still feel uneven.
  • Crashes: Deadlock closes unexpectedly, freezes and exits, or displays an error. Capture the exact wording before restarting if possible.

Record when the symptom occurs. Does it happen as soon as the game launches, only after a recent update, in one particular scene, or throughout every match? Note whether changing resolution or display mode appears to alter it. If you can measure CPU or GPU utilization, record the reading and the moment it occurred, but treat it as context rather than proof that a particular component is defective. A single utilization number does not identify a cause.

A compact troubleshooting log

Use a note, spreadsheet, or screenshot folder with one entry for each test:

  • Game version or update date shown by Steam, if available.
  • Resolution, display mode, and graphics API shown by the game.
  • Symptom category: low FPS, stutter, crash, or more than one.
  • Where and when it appears, such as launch, a specific scene, or after an update.
  • The single setting or launch option changed.
  • What happened after restarting the game and comparing a similar scene.
  • Any visible error text.

This log makes a before-and-after comparison possible. It also lets you return to the last known configuration instead of changing several variables and losing track of the result.

Try basic, reversible checks

Restart Deadlock once and close background workloads you do not need while testing. These are ordinary diagnostic checks, not Deadlock-specific fixes verified by Valve’s published guidance. The purpose is to remove temporary variables, not to promise a performance improvement. If the symptom returns under the same conditions, record that pattern rather than repeatedly restarting without changing anything else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not change a group of graphics options at the same time. Pick one setting, make the smallest change that is useful for the test, restart if the game requires it, and compare a similar scene. If the result is worse, restore the previous value immediately. A controlled sequence is slower than applying a large preset, but it tells you which change affected the symptom.

Reset Valve game settings with -autoconfig

Valve’s general performance FAQ recommends trying -autoconfig as an initial troubleshooting step for its games. Valve’s launch-options documentation describes it as restoring video and performance settings to defaults for the hardware detected on the machine. That makes it a clean starting point when an old configuration is difficult to evaluate. It does not guarantee higher FPS, eliminate stutter, or prove a Deadlock-specific problem has been fixed.

  1. Preserve your current state. Capture screenshots or write down resolution, display mode, graphics options, and any other values you have deliberately changed. A reset can replace those choices.
  2. Open the game’s Steam properties. In Steam, select Deadlock, open its Properties, and locate the Launch Options field. Follow Valve’s launch-options instructions if the location or interface differs in your client.
  3. Enter only the documented option. Add -autoconfig, launch Deadlock, and observe whether the reset changes the symptom. Compare the same type of scene and note the result.
  4. Remove it when the test is complete. Delete -autoconfig from Launch Options if you do not want the reset applied on later launches. Keeping a troubleshooting flag in place can make later comparisons confusing.
  5. Reapply changes gradually. Starting from the detected defaults, change one video setting at a time and record each result. If a change introduces a problem, return to the saved value.

Valve’s wording supports using the option as a reset, not as a guaranteed Deadlock cure. If the symptom is unchanged, that is useful information: the default configuration did not resolve it, so avoid repeatedly applying the same reset and move to a controlled settings comparison or support escalation.

Adjust graphics gradually

Valve recommends changing video settings gradually until a game performs at an acceptable level. Apply that approach literally: alter one option, test, and keep or revert it based on your own machine. There is no Deadlock-specific benchmark in Valve’s published material that supports promising a particular FPS increase for a named setting, preset, resolution, or hardware tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same kind of scene for each comparison. A quiet menu, an empty practice area, and a busy match do not place the same load on the game, so comparing different scenes can make an ineffective change look successful. Record whether the symptom is average slowness, a brief hitch, or a crash; a setting that changes one category may have no effect on another.

For low FPS, compare the frame-rate behavior before and after each video change. For stutter, pay attention to the timing and frequency of hitches rather than only the average number shown by an overlay. For crashes, stop a test that repeatedly reproduces the exit and record the error instead of cycling through many settings without evidence.

If the system uses integrated graphics

Valve’s general Steam Support advice for systems using integrated graphics is to set shader detail low and run the game in windowed mode. The guidance is for Valve games generally, not a Deadlock-specific test, and Valve’s published support guidance does not establish that these choices are appropriate for every current Deadlock build or every integrated-graphics system.

Try the two suggestions as separate experiments. First change shader detail, record the result, and revert if the experience is worse. Then test windowed mode separately. Do not assume that an integrated GPU is the cause of a crash or that a low-shader setting will cure stutter; the advice only supplies a reversible configuration to test. See Valve’s performance troubleshooting FAQ for the general recommendation.

Use symptom and timing to choose the next test

When FPS is consistently low

Confirm that the low rate is persistent rather than a short hitch. Note whether it appears in most scenes or only one type of scene, and whether it began after a configuration change or update. Start with the documented reset if you have not tried it, then make gradual video-setting changes. If one change clearly alters the behavior, keep that change documented; if none does, include the unchanged result in a support request.

When the game stutters

Describe the hitch precisely: a brief pause, repeated uneven frames, or a longer freeze followed by recovery. Note whether it occurs at launch, after an update, or in a particular scene. Do not equate stutter with low average FPS. A community report may mention a single-core bottleneck or a launch flag, but an individual observation does not establish a universal diagnosis. Test one reversible change at a time and compare similar scenes.

When Deadlock crashes

Capture the exact error text, the point at which the process exits, and whether the crash repeats after a restart. Keep a record of the game version, display configuration, recent changes, and any launch options. Avoid adding several community flags while trying to solve a crash; that makes the evidence harder to interpret and can introduce another variable.

Be cautious with community launch flags

Launch options discussed in Deadlock forums are reports from individual players, not universal fixes or official requirements. Results can depend on a particular machine, configuration, or game update. One forum report describes an option that increased stuttering for the person who tested it. That is a warning against copying a list of flags wholesale, not proof that every launch option is harmful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you test a community-suggested flag at all, record the original Launch Options field first, add only one option, and remove it when the comparison is complete. Compare the same scene and symptom category. If the result is worse, restore the prior configuration. Do not present an anecdote about a single-core bottleneck, a reported 144-to-90 FPS drop, or an update-related inconsistency as a measured Deadlock-wide rate or a diagnosis of your own computer. The relevant reports are the single-core bottleneck discussion and the FPS inconsistency discussion.

Do not mistake a suppressed error dialog for crash prevention

Valve lists -nocrashdialog as an option that suppresses some unhandled memory-error dialogs. Suppressing a dialog changes what is displayed; it does not prevent the underlying crash, repair memory, or improve frame rate. Treat it as a presentation behavior, not a stability fix. If you need the error information for support, leaving the dialog behavior unchanged may make the symptom easier to document. Valve’s launch-options documentation explains the option’s limited purpose.

Think about updates without assuming they are the cause

If performance changed immediately after an update, record that timing and the version shown by Steam. A timing link is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the update caused the issue or that every player will see the same behavior. Community posts about inconsistent FPS after updates are patch-sensitive anecdotes. Use them as a reason to document your version and symptom, not as a universal workaround.

Likewise, a symptom that appears only in one scene may reflect that scene’s workload rather than a permanent hardware limit. Compare like with like, keep the test reversible, and avoid turning one observation into a claim about Deadlock’s requirements.

What Deadlock’s published requirements do—and do not—say

The official Steam support listing identifies Valve as Deadlock’s developer and publisher, but lists the operating system, processor, and graphics requirements as not yet determined. It therefore does not establish official minimum or recommended CPU, GPU, or RAM figures. Do not label a particular graphics card, processor, memory amount, or gaming PC as Valve’s minimum or recommended Deadlock hardware based on a forum post or an unofficial list.

This matters when diagnosing performance. The absence of published figures means you should describe your actual configuration and observed behavior instead of declaring that a component is below an official requirement. It also means a hardware purchase is not a general troubleshooting step supported by the listing. First document the symptom and test reversible software changes; only a diagnosis based on your own measurements could justify considering a hardware decision.

When to contact Deadlock support

If crashes recur, the game remains unplayable after reversible settings changes, or you cannot identify a repeatable pattern, use Deadlock’s official Steam Support page. Include:

  • Your CPU, GPU, memory, operating system, and display details as you know them.
  • The Deadlock version or recent update associated with the change.
  • Resolution, display mode, graphics API if shown, and current launch options.
  • Whether the symptom is low FPS, stutter, crash, or a combination.
  • When it occurs and whether it is tied to launch, an update, or a particular scene.
  • The exact error text, copied carefully or shown in a screenshot.
  • Each reversible step already attempted and whether it changed the symptom.

Share observations without assigning blame to a component. Saying “the game stutters in this scene after the update, and -autoconfig plus one graphics change did not alter it” is more useful than asserting that a CPU, GPU, or driver must be faulty. Support can then evaluate the report using the details you supplied.

A concise decision path

  1. Classify the symptom and record timing, version, configuration, and error text.
  2. Restart once and close unnecessary background workloads as basic checks.
  3. Save current settings before resetting anything.
  4. Use Valve’s documented -autoconfig reset as a controlled test, then remove it if appropriate.
  5. Change one video setting at a time and compare similar scenes.
  6. For integrated graphics, separately test low shader detail and windowed mode with the stated caveat.
  7. Avoid treating community flags or anecdotes as universal solutions.
  8. Escalate recurring crashes or unchanged symptoms to Deadlock’s official Steam Support page with your complete log.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will -autoconfig definitely increase Deadlock FPS?

No. Valve documents it as a reset of video and performance settings for detected hardware and recommends it as a starting troubleshooting step for Valve games. The guidance does not promise an FPS increase or establish a Deadlock-specific cure. Record your settings first, test it once, and compare the result.

Should I leave -autoconfig in Steam Launch Options permanently?

Usually treat it as a reset test. Remove it after launching and checking the result if you do not want the reset applied on future launches. Keeping a troubleshooting option in place can make later settings comparisons harder to interpret.

Is stuttering the same as low FPS?

No. Low FPS is persistently slow frame-rate behavior; stuttering is uneven delivery or short pauses. A game can have an acceptable average FPS and still stutter, so describe timing and frequency separately in your notes and support report.

What should integrated-graphics users try first?

Valve’s general Steam guidance suggests low shader detail and windowed mode for systems using integrated graphics. Test each separately and revert if it worsens the experience. The guidance is not a Deadlock-specific benchmark or guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does -nocrashdialog stop Deadlock from crashing?

No. Valve describes it as suppressing some unhandled memory-error dialogs. It changes the dialog behavior and does not prevent the underlying crash or improve performance.

Are forum launch flags safe to copy?

Treat them as individual, patch-sensitive reports, not universal fixes. One Deadlock forum user reported increased stuttering after trying an option. Preserve your original settings, test one flag at a time if you test one at all, and remove it if the result is worse.

What are Deadlock’s official minimum PC requirements?

The official Steam support listing currently leaves the operating system, processor, and graphics requirements as not yet determined. It does not provide official minimum or recommended CPU, GPU, or RAM figures, so do not present an unofficial list as Valve’s requirement.

What information should I send to Steam Support?

Provide hardware and software details, game version or recent update, resolution, display mode, graphics API if shown, launch options, symptom timing, exact error text, and the reversible steps you tested. Explain whether each step changed the behavior without assuming a particular component is at fault.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Bottom Line

Separate persistent low FPS, stutter, and crashes before troubleshooting. Save your settings, use Valve’s -autoconfig option as a reversible reset test, and change graphics settings one at a time. For integrated graphics, Valve generally suggests low shader detail and windowed mode, but that advice is not a Deadlock-specific guarantee. Community flags and anecdotes can be patch- or system-specific, and -nocrashdialog only suppresses some dialogs rather than preventing crashes. Because Deadlock’s official OS, CPU, and graphics requirements are listed as not yet determined, document your actual configuration and contact official Steam Support when symptoms persist.
