Choose based on the campaign your group wants to play: pick Dungeons & Dragons for its fantasy setting and fifth-edition rules; pick a dedicated Star Wars roleplaying game if you want the story set in that galaxy. The Star Wars line offers three campaign perspectives—Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny—whose core mechanics are described as interchangeable.
Start with the campaign premise
Choose D&D for fantasy adventures
D&D is the natural fit when the group wants a fantasy roleplaying campaign and its fifth-edition rules. If your table already uses the 2014 material, D&D Beyond labels that content 5e and its updated fifth-edition material 5.5e. The platform says both remain supported and can be used together for campaigns and character creation. That compatibility is useful, but it does not settle every table’s preferences or conversion choices. D&D Beyond explains the 5e and 5.5e distinction and compatibility.

Choose Star Wars for stories in that galaxy
If the setting is the main attraction, the Star Wars RPG gives the group three ways to frame its campaign: Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny. The publisher describes their core mechanics as fully interchangeable, so the choice is about campaign perspective rather than a proven difference in rules systems. Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars RPG material describes the three lines.
What the Star Wars lines are for
Use the campaign’s focus to choose a starting line. The publisher’s descriptions distinguish the lines by the kind of Star Wars story they support, not by a separately established rules complexity or learning curve.

How to choose if your group already plays D&D
Existing D&D experience is a practical reason to stay with D&D when the group still wants fantasy: D&D Beyond says its 2014 5e and updated 5.5e content can be combined on its platform. If the group’s priority has shifted to Star Wars, that familiarity alone does not answer the setting question; choose the Star Wars line by campaign premise instead.

For learning D&D, D&D Beyond’s Basic Rules are the player- and Dungeon Master-facing resource. The System Reference Document (SRD) has a different purpose: it is a rules reference for creators who want to publish compatible material. D&D Beyond says SRD 5.2.1 is released under CC-BY-4.0 and cannot be revoked or altered by Wizards of the Coast. Don’t mistake the SRD for the platform’s introductory learning guide. Read the SRD v5.2.1 page and D&D Beyond’s explanation of publishing compatible creations.
What to get first
For a Star Wars campaign, the Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook is a named starting point: its official product description says it supports a new or continuing campaign. Because the publisher’s current site redirects and a stable current core-book page could not be confirmed, verify the edition, regional availability, and stock before buying or recommending a particular listing.

For D&D, begin with the official Basic Rules as a learning resource, then choose books that match the edition and campaign your group wants. The available official material distinguishes the Basic Rules from the creator-facing SRD; it does not establish a specific current retail listing or price.

They do not provide a fair, quantified comparison of rules complexity, onboarding time, session length, or cost.
