These labels do not all indicate the same kind of problem. A timeout is not evidence of corrupted files, and a modified-data message is not, by itself, proof that you cheated. Start with the layer named by the code.
Capture the right evidence before changing anything
Support can diagnose a reproducible error far faster when the report includes the original details. Write them down while the failure is visible.

0xprefix. - Note your platform and, on PC, whether you use the Stable or Experimental branch.
- Record the server name, region if shown, and the approximate time of the failed attempt, including your time zone.
- Test whether the failure occurs on one server or on every server you try.
- For network-related errors, record whether the connection is wired or Wi-Fi, your approximate connection speed and any recent router, ISP or network-policy change.
- Do not repeatedly retry for hours without recording a pattern. A sequence showing that every server fails is useful evidence; a single failed server may indicate a server-specific or routing problem.
For a problematic server, the official PC troubleshooting guidance may ask for a traceroute. Run one only when requested or when you know how to interpret the result, and include the server name and time alongside it.
How to fix 0x00020009: “connecting failed”
0x00020009 is the CONNECT error. It occurs while DayZ is trying to establish the connection, so it does not identify a particular hardware component as defective. Bohemia’s official PC troubleshooting thread puts clean game data first.
Step 1: restore vanilla game and DLC data
- Close DayZ and the game launcher.
- Remove or disable any non-vanilla files or modifications you intentionally installed.
- Reinstall the base game and its downloadable-content data from the platform’s normal installation process.
- Start the game without adding mods and test a known server.
The purpose is to establish a clean baseline. Do not add other changes at the same time; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result.
Step 2: separate a server problem from a general connection problem
Try more than one server. If only one fails, retain that server’s name and the approximate attempt time. If every server fails after the clean reinstall, treat the issue as a broader connection or login case and include your connection method in the report.
Step 3: prepare an escalation report
If the code remains, provide the server name, approximate attempt time, connection method and any requested traceroute. The official support guidance asks for these details rather than a vague statement that “DayZ will not connect.”
How to fix 0x00050017: “server unreachable”
0x00050017 indicates that the game cannot reach the server. It is a reachability problem, not a generic instruction to reinstall the game. This distinction matters especially when you played successfully for a long time and the error began after a router or ISP change.

Check local filtering first
- Inspect router firewall rules that could block game traffic.
- Check parental-control, access-schedule and device-filtering rules.
- Review any recent router firmware, security-profile or ISP equipment change.
- If your network is managed by someone else, ask whether a new policy was applied.
Do not alter advanced router settings you do not understand. Record the current configuration before making a change, and restore it if the change creates new connectivity problems.
Compare another network
If possible, test the same account and installation on a different connection, such as a trusted wired network or a phone hotspot. The comparison is diagnostic: success on the second network points toward the original router or ISP path, while failure everywhere points back to the game, account or a wider service issue. A hotspot may have different latency or data limits, so use it as a short test rather than a permanent solution.
What to send to support
Include the server name, the time of the failed attempt, your connection type and any network changes that preceded the problem. If the official thread requests a traceroute, attach it with the destination and time clearly identified.
How to fix 0x00040031: PLAYER_STATE_TIMEOUT
0x00040031 is labeled PLAYER_STATE_TIMEOUT. During login, the player remains in one login-machine state longer than allowed. The label describes a session-state timeout; it does not tell you that your character data is permanently lost.
Run a controlled test
- Exit to the launcher and try the same server once more after confirming that your network is otherwise working.
- Try a second server in the same region.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection if one is practical.
- Avoid downloading large files or streaming high-bandwidth video during the test.
These steps do not guarantee a cure, but they help distinguish a transient route or congestion problem from a repeatable login-state failure.
Details the official troubleshooting request uses
When reporting 0x00040031, provide whether the connection is wired or Wi-Fi, connection-speed information, your region, the server name and the exact attempt time. Those details let support compare the failure with server and network events instead of guessing from the code alone.

How to fix 0x00040004 and 0x0004000A network errors
0x00040004 — network timeout
0x00040004 means that a network operation did not receive a response within the permitted time. Check whether other internet services are working, then retry without saturating the connection. If the failure affects only one server, keep that server name for your report.
0x0004000A — unstable network
0x0004000A identifies an unstable network rather than a simple one-off timeout. Look for intermittent Wi-Fi signal, competing traffic, router restarts or a changing connection path. If you can, compare wired and Wi-Fi results from the same location.

How to fix 0x00040009: “modified data”
0x00040009 is MODIFIED_DATA. Bohemia’s reference describes modified or corrupted installation data. The wording includes corruption, so this message is not proof of cheating.
Restore a clean PC installation
- Close DayZ and its launcher.
- Disable or remove non-vanilla files that you added to the installation.
- In Steam, open your Library, right-click DayZ, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow the verification to complete and let Steam reacquire any missing or damaged files.
- Launch the game without third-party modifications and test a server.
The exact button wording can change with Steam updates, but the relevant controls are the game’s Properties page and the Installed Files verification command.
Check the intended branch
For Steam PC users, open DayZ Properties and check the BETAs tab. Confirm that the selected branch is the one you intend to run—normally Stable unless you deliberately use Experimental. A branch mismatch can leave you launching a version that does not match the server or the files you expected.

If verification does not clear the error
Remove leftover modifications, repeat the clean launch and then consider a full reinstall if the installation remains inconsistent. Preserve the code and timing in case support needs to investigate. Do not describe the message as a ban unless a separate BattlEye message explicitly says so.

0x000400F0 is defined as a BattlEye kick. It belongs to the anti-cheat layer, so the correct support route differs from a network timeout or corrupted-data error.
Kick versus global ban
A kick means the anti-cheat service removed the session. A global-ban notice is a separate and more serious account status. Reinstalling DayZ cannot be promised as a way to reverse a BattlEye ban.
Bohemia’s official support FAQ states: “The banning system is administrated by Battleye, we have absolutely no involvement in the process of detecting cheats/hacks nor administrating any bans etc.” For a global-ban matter, contact BattlEye through its support route. For a non-ban BattlEye client failure, follow BattlEye’s own troubleshooting instructions, including removal and reinstallation of its local folder when their FAQ specifically calls for that step.

Use the anti-cheat path, not a generic reinstall loop
- Read the complete BattlEye message and determine whether it says kick, initialization failure or global ban.
- Close the game and launcher before repairing the BattlEye component.
- Use the support instructions that correspond to the exact message.
- Retest once, then preserve the message text and time if the failure returns.
Do not claim that a clean DayZ installation clears an account-level ban. The authority for the banning system is BattlEye, according to Bohemia’s FAQ.
Why the DayZ server list can be empty
An empty browser does not always mean that your installation is broken. Bohemia’s support FAQ says that if it is Wednesday, an empty server list is most likely scheduled maintenance at 08:00 (GMT +1). This is the operational time published by Bohemia Interactive and was current on October 14, 2026.
Wait until the maintenance window has passed, restart the browser and check again. If the list remains empty afterward, contact customer support with your platform, region and the time you checked. If the list is populated but joining one server produces an error, use that specific code’s procedure instead.
A decision path for one-server and all-server failures

Common troubleshooting mistakes
Reinstalling before identifying the layer
A reinstall is appropriate for 0x00040009 and is the first recommendation for persistent 0x00020009 in the official PC thread. It is not the first response to every code. For 0x00050017, inspect reachability; for 0x000400F0, use BattlEye support.
Assuming “modified data” means cheating
The official label includes corrupted data. Verify or restore the installation before drawing conclusions about account enforcement.
Changing router settings blindly
Unfamiliar firewall and filtering changes can create additional failures. Record the original state, make one controlled change at a time and stop if you cannot explain what a setting does.
Reporting without a timestamp
“It failed yesterday” is much less useful than the server name, exact approximate time and time zone. Timestamps allow support to compare your attempt with maintenance, server or network events.
Installing Arma 2 as a supposed prerequisite
DayZ is a standalone product. Bohemia’s official FAQ states that Arma 2 is not required to play DayZ, so installing it is not a general fix for these errors.

Escalate after you have performed the code-appropriate first action and can show whether the problem affects one server or all servers. Include:
- Exact hexadecimal code and complete message text.
- Platform, game branch and launcher used.
- Server name, region and approximate attempt time with time zone.
- Wired or Wi-Fi connection and available speed information.
- Recent router, ISP, firewall or parental-control changes.
- Verification or clean-install results, including whether the error changed.
- Traceroute output when the official troubleshooting request asks for it.
Use Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ support or feedback channel for game, server-list and general connection cases. Use BattlEye’s support route for anti-cheat client failures and global-ban matters. Keep the report focused on one reproducible error and do not combine unrelated codes into a single diagnosis.
Bottom line
Read the hexadecimal code as a layer indicator. Verify clean files for modified-data errors, investigate the router or route for unreachable-server and timeout errors, collect session details for PLAYER_STATE_TIMEOUT, and take BattlEye kicks or bans to BattlEye’s support system. The server name, exact time and scope of the failure—one server or every server—are the evidence that turns a generic DayZ error into a solvable case.
