DayZ does not have universal crossplay. Steam PC and PlayStation use separate ecosystems from Xbox. The one current exception is the Microsoft Store/Xbox PC build: through Xbox Play Anywhere, it can play with an Xbox-console friend on Keyboard & Mouse servers. A Steam installation cannot join Xbox servers, and PlayStation cannot use this PC-to-Xbox route.
If you cannot see a friend or a server, identify the exact game build first. Then check the server’s input restriction, client and server branch, updates, maintenance, account entitlement, voice-chat eligibility and BattlEye status in that order.

The device alone does not identify your multiplayer ecosystem. Two people may both be using a PC or both be using a console, yet still be unable to connect because their editions authenticate against different networks.

This is the current rule described in Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ support information. It is an ecosystem limitation, not a setting that can be repaired with a router change or a server-browser filter.

Start by identifying the exact edition
Steam on PC
Steam DayZ is not the Xbox Play Anywhere PC build. If your friend is on Xbox, a Steam installation will not join the friend’s Xbox server, even when both copies show the same game name and appear fully updated.
Microsoft Store or Xbox app on PC
The PC edition delivered through Microsoft’s Store/Xbox ecosystem is the build that can use the limited PC-to-Xbox connection. Both players still need a compatible server, and the route is restricted to Keyboard & Mouse servers. Installing DayZ through Steam does not provide this entitlement.

Xbox console
An Xbox player should invite or meet the PC player on a server that supports the Microsoft Store/Xbox build and the required input category. A controller-only server is not an equivalent target for this crossplay path.
PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5
PlayStation remains separate from the Xbox and PC ecosystems described above. A PS5 player cannot join an Xbox player through the Xbox Play Anywhere exception, and changing the PC edition will not create a PlayStation connection.
Eight checks that fix most failed joins

1. Confirm the build before changing settings
Ask each player where DayZ is installed and which account owns it. Record Steam, PlayStation, Xbox console or Microsoft Store/Xbox PC. If an Xbox player is paired with a PC player, the PC copy must be the Microsoft Store/Xbox build; stop troubleshooting if it is Steam, because those ecosystems do not connect.

2. Choose a compatible input category
The Microsoft Store/Xbox PC route is available on Keyboard & Mouse servers. A controller-only server is not a valid target for that route. In the browser, inspect the server’s input or control restriction and select a Keyboard & Mouse server when the group includes the Microsoft Store PC build and an Xbox console.

3. Update, fully quit and refresh
Install any pending DayZ update on every participating device. Then fully exit the game rather than leaving it suspended, relaunch it and refresh the server browser. Bohemia Interactive specifically recommends restarting and manually checking for updates when servers are missing.

Have every player perform the same sequence. A single stale client can produce a version error or prevent a friend’s server from appearing even when the other player has already updated.

4. Check for scheduled maintenance
Bohemia’s multiplayer support identifies scheduled maintenance as normally occurring on Wednesday at 08:00 GMT+1. If the browser becomes empty or connections fail around that window, wait until maintenance has finished, then restart DayZ and check for updates again.

5. Match the Steam branch to the server
Steam has separate Stable and Experimental branches. To inspect the selection, open Steam, go to Library, right-click DayZ, choose Properties, open BETAs, and check the selected branch.
Most servers run the latest version. An Experimental client cannot join a Stable server, and a Stable client cannot join an Experimental server unless the server itself is running the corresponding branch. Set the client to the branch used by the target server, allow Steam to finish any download, restart DayZ and refresh the list.

6. Verify account ownership and online services
Use the account that owns the relevant edition. On PC, confirm that the signed-in Steam or Microsoft account is the one with the DayZ entitlement; on Xbox, confirm the console profile has access to the game and online multiplayer; on PlayStation, use the profile that owns or can access the PlayStation edition.

A successful login to the desktop or console does not prove that the multiplayer service is currently available, so sign out and back in only after checking that the platform is not reporting an outage.

7. Check voice-chat eligibility separately
Voice access is an account issue, not evidence of crossplay compatibility. On the Microsoft Store version, VOIP is tied to Microsoft age verification. Without that verification, voice chat is blocked even if the game and server connection otherwise work.

Complete the age-verification requirement on the Microsoft account, then restart the game and test VOIP again. A blocked microphone does not by itself explain why a server is absent; treat voice entitlement and server visibility as separate checks.

8. Separate BattlEye problems from platform incompatibility
BattlEye administers BattlEye global bans. If a ban message appears, changing the DayZ crossplay setup will not remove it. Bohemia’s support information notes that the browser can be filtered to non-BattlEye servers, but that filter only changes anti-cheat requirements; it does not connect otherwise incompatible ecosystems.

When a friend’s server is missing versus one named server failing
The symptom points to a different cause. Use the table before reinstalling anything.

How to diagnose a failed friend join
First compare the two players’ editions
Write the editions side by side rather than saying only “PC” or “Xbox.” The valid Xbox pairing is Xbox console plus Microsoft Store/Xbox PC build, not Xbox console plus Steam PC. If either player is on PlayStation, the group needs a PlayStation-compatible arrangement instead; the Xbox exception cannot include that player.
Then compare the target server’s input rule
For the Microsoft Store/Xbox PC route, select a Keyboard & Mouse server. If the server is controller-only, choose another server whose input category supports the route. A friend invitation does not override a server’s input restriction.
Finally compare branch and update state
On Steam, inspect Properties > BETAs and make sure the selected branch corresponds to the server. On every platform, apply pending updates, fully quit DayZ, relaunch and refresh the browser. If other servers work after these checks, the original server may be full, private, password protected, whitelisted or offline.

Use another server as a control test
Choose another server that matches the same platform ecosystem, input category and branch. If it loads, your account and client are probably functional, and the named server should be investigated as a server-side issue.

Check provider-controlled access rules
Community servers can require a password or whitelist, reach capacity, restart for maintenance or experience an outage. Contact or check the status page of that server’s provider for those conditions. Do not infer a global DayZ crossplay failure from one unavailable community server.

A server can remain visible while refusing a player whose branch, build, entitlement or input category does not match. Visibility is only a browser result; it is not proof that the server accepts every DayZ edition.
Common version and maintenance messages
“Wrong version” or an equivalent build error
- Install the current update on every client.
- Fully quit and relaunch DayZ after the download.
- On Steam, match Stable or Experimental under Properties > BETAs.
- Refresh the browser and select a server running the same branch.
Most servers use the latest version, so an Experimental client is not a substitute for an updated Stable client. Both the branch and the actual build need to align.
Empty browser during Wednesday maintenance
Scheduled multiplayer maintenance is normally Wednesday at 08:00 GMT+1. Wait until the window ends, restart the game and manually check for updates. If the browser remains empty afterward, test the platform service and another compatible server, then contact Bohemia Interactive support if the problem persists.
What BattlEye can and cannot explain
BattlEye is the anti-cheat service involved in BattlEye-protected servers, and BattlEye—not Bohemia Interactive—administers BattlEye global bans. A ban can explain why a protected server rejects an account, but it cannot explain why Steam and Xbox editions fail to crossplay: that incompatibility exists independently.

Final pre-support checklist
- Each player has identified the exact edition: Steam, Microsoft Store/Xbox PC, Xbox console or PlayStation.
- The PC player paired with Xbox is using the Microsoft Store/Xbox build, not Steam.
- The target server supports the required Keyboard & Mouse input category for the Microsoft Store/Xbox route.
- Every client is updated, fully restarted and has a refreshed server browser.
- Steam players have matched Stable or Experimental to the target server.
- The test is not taking place during the normal Wednesday 08:00 GMT+1 maintenance window.
- The signed-in account owns or can access the relevant edition and online service.
- Microsoft Store players who need VOIP have completed Microsoft age verification.
- No BattlEye ban or server-specific password, whitelist, capacity or outage is blocking access.
- Another compatible server has been tested to distinguish a local problem from a single-server failure.
If these checks leave every compatible server unavailable, provide Bohemia Interactive support with the platform and edition, branch, exact error text, maintenance timing, account-service status and whether other servers are visible. For one community server only, contact that server’s provider with the same details.
