A data warehouse brings together information across multiple subject areas for broad organizational analysis. A data mart focuses on a specific subject, team, or business function, such as sales or finance. A mart can be built from a warehouse, directly from operational or external sources, or from a mix of both—so it is not necessarily just a smaller copy of a warehouse.
What is the difference between a data warehouse and a data mart?
The clearest difference is scope. A warehouse is designed for analysis across an organization or several business areas; a mart is organized around a narrower subject or community of users. A mart might serve a sales team, a finance function, a division, or a region, while a warehouse can support analysis that spans those groups.

That distinction describes purpose, not a required product or physical design. A mart is not defined by a particular database, schema, or size limit. AWS notes that marts can use different structures, and Oracle’s documentation cautions that users and vendors have not reached complete consensus on terminology. The definitions below are useful architectural conventions, rather than rigid technical standards.

| Dimension | Data warehouse | Data mart |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Multiple subjects or business functions across an organization | A particular subject, department, division, or region |
| Data sources | Often integrates information from multiple source systems | May use selected warehouse data, a few direct sources, or a combination |
| Typical users | Users with cross-functional or organization-wide analytical needs | A defined business community with focused analytical needs |
| Primary benefit | Supports analysis across integrated subject areas | Provides a more focused dataset for a team’s recurring work |
| Main trade-off | Broader integration and governance requirements | Separate marts can make cross-functional analysis more complex |
| Relationship | Can provide curated data to dependent marts | Can depend on a warehouse, stand alone, or combine sources |
These patterns can coexist on the same technology platform. AWS documents Redshift as usable to build both data warehouses and data marts; the architecture choice is distinct from the platform choice.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does a data mart have to come from a warehouse?
No. “Dependent,” “independent,” and “hybrid” describe common ways a mart gets its data. They are useful distinctions because they affect how data is prepared and where integration work takes place.
Dependent mart
A dependent mart receives data from a central warehouse. It can reuse data that has already been formatted or summarized, which can simplify the mart’s loading process. This pattern also ties the focused dataset to the warehouse’s integration work.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Independent mart
An independent mart draws directly from operational systems or external sources rather than relying on a central warehouse. It can serve a focused need on its own, but its pipeline must handle its own extraction, transformation, and loading.
Hybrid mart
A hybrid mart combines warehouse data with direct operational or external inputs. This can be appropriate when a team needs centrally integrated information alongside data that is not supplied by the warehouse.

Why use a mart—and what can go wrong?
A focused dataset can make recurring analysis easier for a department to consume and manage. Rather than asking every user to work across a broad enterprise store, an organization can present information tailored to a defined subject or team.
The trade-off appears when separate functional marts must be queried together. If sales, finance, and marketing each maintain distinct datasets, analysis that crosses those areas may require additional coordination and integration. AWS’s architecture guidance identifies cross-functional querying across distributed marts as a potential source of complexity.

Which architecture should you choose?
Choose a warehouse-centered approach for broad analysis
Favor a warehouse-centered pattern when analytical work requires integrating multiple source systems or business functions—for example, reporting or ad hoc analysis that crosses organizational boundaries. A central warehouse can also supply consistent, curated data to narrower dependent marts.
Choose a focused mart for a defined team need
A mart can fit when a particular department or subject area needs a narrower dataset shaped around its recurring analysis. Decide whether it should draw from the warehouse, source its data independently, or combine inputs; that choice determines where the extraction, transformation, and integration responsibilities sit.

Use both when enterprise integration and team-level access matter
A warehouse and marts are not mutually exclusive. An organization can integrate data centrally, then provide focused datasets for business communities that need a simpler view. The key is to account for the cost of keeping separate datasets aligned and to preserve a workable path for analysis across functions.
These are architecture guidelines, not guarantees of performance or cost. Those outcomes depend on the implementation and workload. If you are comparing platforms, assess architecture, scalability, security, pricing, and performance against actual use cases and existing requirements; Google Cloud recommends this kind of use-case-based evaluation. Neither warehouse nor mart is universally the better choice, and a platform’s ability to support both does not settle which design your organization needs.
