Which backpack is this?
The name varies by listing. ALPAKA Japan’s product headline calls it “ESSENTIAL BACKPACK 22L,” while its specifications call it “ESSENTIAL BACKPACK PRO 22L.” CGMagazine’s August 25, 2026 review uses “ALPAKA Essentials Pack 22L.” This review uses ALPAKA Essential Backpack Pro 22L to identify the same 22-liter pack across those sources.

What do you get for everyday carry?
The pack’s strongest practical feature is the way it separates quick-access storage from the main load. ALPAKA Japan lists a top zip pocket with two open pockets, a front zip pocket with a MOD key tether, and a main compartment with an open pocket, mesh zip pocket and AirTag pocket. A separate compartment sits against the back for a laptop, while a security zip pocket is on the rear of the bag.
Two side bottle pockets keep bottles accessible without taking up main-compartment space. A luggage-handle pass-through and carry handle add convenience for transit and short trips. The shoulder straps include a chest strap and loops for separately sold HUB accessories.

CGMagazine reviewer Matt Keith, writing after several weeks of daily carry, praised the organization, bottom padding and bottle pockets. He also liked the magnetic chest-strap buckle. Those are one reviewer’s use observations, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of fit for every user.

Will your laptop fit?
There is a meaningful discrepancy in the available fit claims. ALPAKA Japan says the rear compartment supports laptops up to 16 inches; Keith’s CGMagazine review says it holds up to a 15-inch laptop. Neither source gives the chassis measurements behind its claim or explains the difference.
Screen size alone is not enough to establish fit, since laptops with the same advertised screen size can have different chassis dimensions. Compare your device’s width, depth and thickness with the compartment or confirm fit with the seller before relying on the 16-inch claim. The sources do not provide compartment measurements, so universal compatibility with 16-inch laptops is not established.

How does it compare with the 16L model?
The 22L version is larger, deeper and heavier, and its storage layout differs in ways that matter for daily use.

According to ALPAKA Japan’s listings, moving from 16L to 22L adds 6L of nominal capacity, 160 g and 3 cm of depth. The 22L pack is slightly taller and narrower as well. Those figures do not predict how a loaded pack will feel, so consider the actual items you carry and whether the extra depth suits your commute. The 16L and 22L specifications are listed by ALPAKA Japan for the 22L model and ALPAKA Japan for the 16L model.

What are the comfort and weather caveats?
Keith said the shoulder straps were comfortable for him overall, but that his wider shoulders would benefit from wider straps to distribute weight. That is an individual fit observation, not evidence that the straps will be uncomfortable for other people. If possible, try the pack with a representative load; comfort can change once a bag is full.

ALPAKA describes the fabric as water-repellent and the YKK AquaGuard zippers as water-resistant, but the listing does not provide a waterproof rating. Treat the bag as water-resistant rather than assuming it is waterproof.

Who should consider the 22L?
This is a plausible choice for someone who wants an organized commute pack with quick-access pockets, external bottle storage and a luggage pass-through. The 22L capacity and separate rear laptop compartment also suit light travel, provided the added depth works for the way you carry a bag.
Before choosing it over the 16L model or another everyday backpack, weigh the 18 cm depth against your usual load, verify laptop fit by chassis dimensions, and think about whether external bottle access is more useful to you than internal bottle storage. The available evidence supports the listed features and one reviewer’s short-term impressions; it does not establish universal device fit, long-term durability or performance in severe weather.
