Could SIP ALG Be Behind Dropped Video Calls? Check This Router Setting

SIP ALG can help some VoIP traffic and interfere with some devices. Find out when to check it, how to change it on select routers, and how to test safely.

If calls using SIP or another VoIP service are dropping, checking your router’s SIP ALG setting is a low-cost troubleshooting step. Turning it off helps some setups and can hinder others; it is not a proven fix for every video-call app or dropout. The specific setting behind the headline anecdote has not been identified.

What SIP ALG does on a router

SIP ALG, or Session Initiation Protocol Application Layer Gateway, inspects some VoIP traffic and may modify it to help it pass through a router’s firewall or network address translation (NAT). NETGEAR describes the feature as enabled by default on the routers covered by its guidance.

That intervention can help in one network and cause trouble in another. TP-Link says some VoIP apps and devices can handle firewall traversal themselves, and that this can conflict with SIP ALG. D-Link likewise notes that SIP ALG may interfere with some devices. TP-Link’s Deco support documentation says, “In this case, we can turn off SIP ALG on routers to ensure that VoIP calls will work normally.” That is conditional guidance, not a guarantee for every call or router.

Could SIP ALG explain a video call dropping?

Possibly, if the call uses SIP/VoIP and the router’s handling of that traffic is part of the problem. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that SIP ALG causes dropouts in all consumer video-call apps, or that it caused the particular anecdote in the headline. Don’t assume every video call uses SIP.

Test the change without guessing

  1. Record whether SIP ALG is currently enabled so you can restore the original setting.
  2. If your router exposes the setting and your provider or administrator has no contrary guidance, change only SIP ALG and apply the change.
  3. Repeat a call under conditions as similar as possible to those in which the problem occurred. Note whether the same symptom changes.
  4. If the change makes calls worse or causes another problem, restore the original setting. If the symptom persists, the result does not establish that SIP ALG was responsible.

This controlled before-and-after approach is a practical troubleshooting method, not a test result established by the manufacturer guidance. If the setting is absent, do not assume it is hidden under a particular menu: consult support for the exact router model and firmware.
