For most data centers, the practical answer is a hybrid: batteries in the UPS handle the instant a utility feed fails, while diesel generators or PEM hydrogen fuel cells supply power through a prolonged outage. Diesel remains the mature, serviceable choice for many-hour or multi-day autonomy. Lithium-ion batteries excel at ride-through and short-duration support but are rarely economical as a standalone 24-hour source. PEM fuel cells offer exceptionally low local pollutants and long runtime when hydrogen is stored on site, yet their business case depends on equipment cost, hydrogen pricing, diesel pricing and stack durability.
Which backup technology fits which data-center duty?
A data center has two different backup problems. The first is an interruption lasting from a fraction of a second to the time needed for a standby source to start and stabilize. The second is sustained generation while the utility is unavailable. Treating both as one technology choice produces misleading comparisons.

| Criterion | Diesel generator | Lithium-ion battery energy storage | PEM hydrogen fuel cell |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer and response | Automatic-start equipment reaches stable output after a start sequence; the UPS bridges that interval. | Near-instantaneous inverter response, making it well suited to ride-through and seamless transfer. | Electrochemical generation can respond quickly, but the complete system still needs controls, power electronics and a UPS for uninterrupted transfer. |
| Sustained runtime | Hours to days when tanks can be replenished; runtime scales with stored and delivered diesel. | Short-duration by design unless a very large energy system is installed. Schneider Electric says lithium-ion is not well suited to 24-hour backup. | Extended runtime with sufficient stored hydrogen and delivery arrangements. |
| Fuel or charging | On-site tanks, fuel deliveries, fuel quality management and spill controls. | Electric charging capacity, state-of-charge management and replacement planning. | Hydrogen storage, delivery or production, pressure systems and hydrogen-quality controls. |
| Local emissions | Combustion produces nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, particulate matter, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. | No combustion emissions at the installation; lifecycle emissions depend on the electricity used to charge it and on battery manufacture. | No on-site carbon dioxide or nitrogen-oxide emissions during normal operation; upstream hydrogen emissions depend on how hydrogen is produced. |
| Noise and vibration | High relative to the alternatives and normally requires acoustic treatment and separation. | Low operating noise, mainly from inverters and cooling. | Low local air pollution and generally lower mechanical noise than a reciprocating engine, with cooling and compressors still requiring design attention. |
| Capital and operating economics | Established supply chain and predictable service model; fuel, maintenance, emissions controls and testing add operating cost. | Cost rises with both inverter power and stored energy; augmentation and eventual replacement must be budgeted. | Economics remain sensitive to stack and balance-of-plant cost, hydrogen price, diesel price and durability. |
| Permitting and safety | Air permits, fuel storage, spill prevention, fire protection and exhaust routing. | Battery fire detection and suppression, thermal-runaway separation, ventilation and electrical-code compliance. | Hydrogen detection, ventilation, pressure relief, hazardous-area controls, setbacks and fire-code review. |
| Resilience risk | Depends on fuel reserves, delivery access, generator redundancy and maintenance. | Depends on state of charge, grid availability for recharge, cell health, thermal conditions and inverter redundancy. | Depends on hydrogen inventory or deliveries, stack condition, compressors, controls and storage integrity. |
There is no universal winner. Schneider Electric’s 9 June 2022 comparison concluded that “there is no obvious choice for a direct replacement of diesel generators for a long runtime backup-only application.” The right comparison holds the critical load, availability tier, autonomy target, testing regime and site constraints constant.

Why diesel remains widely deployed
Diesel technology is mature, widely serviceable and supported by established original-equipment manufacturers, rental fleets and fuel distributors. A generator can continue operating as long as it has usable fuel, cooling capacity, lubrication and a path for exhaust heat. Additional tanks or scheduled deliveries extend autonomy without multiplying the electrical conversion equipment.

Large facilities commonly install multiple generator sets in parallel rather than relying on one machine. Parallel controls allow staged loading, maintenance of an individual set and continued service after a single failure. Automatic transfer switches, switchgear, protection settings and controls are as important as the engine rating: a correctly sized engine connected through poorly coordinated transfer equipment is not a resilient system.
What can make a diesel plant fail
- Fuel degradation: Water, sediment and microbial growth can block filters or damage injectors. Tanks need sampling, housekeeping and, where appropriate, fuel polishing.
- Starting failure: Batteries, chargers, jacket-water heaters and control circuits must be inspected, not assumed healthy because the engine ran last month.
- Under-loading: Lightly loaded engines can accumulate deposits and may not demonstrate real performance. Load-bank or controlled-load testing should reflect the facility’s operating procedures.
- Environmental limits: Heat, altitude, flooding, salt exposure and restricted airflow reduce available output or shorten component life.
- Fuel access: A prolonged regional emergency can interrupt deliveries even when tanks are full at the start.
The cited sources support regular testing and maintenance but do not establish one universal maintenance interval. The interval belongs in the site’s manufacturer schedule, risk assessment, fuel-storage plan and regulatory permit.
Diesel trade-offs
Combustion emissions, exhaust stacks, acoustic treatment, vibration isolation, fuel containment and air-quality permitting can make diesel difficult in urban or emissions-constrained locations. Noise and local pollutants may also conflict with neighboring uses. Diesel is therefore strongest where long autonomy, rapid refueling and a mature service network outweigh those impacts.

Lithium-ion batteries: superb ride-through, limited duration
How a battery backup is sized
Battery systems are specified by both power and energy. Power, expressed in kilowatts or megawatts, determines how much critical load the inverter can serve. Energy, expressed in kilowatt-hours or megawatt-hours, determines how long it can do so. A first-order estimate is:

runtime (hours) ≈ usable battery energy (kWh) ÷ critical load (kW)
Usable energy is lower than the nameplate because the design reserves state of charge, incurs inverter and cooling losses, and must account for temperature, cell aging and the manufacturer’s operating limits. For example, a 2 MWh nameplate system serving a steady 1 MW critical load cannot be advertised as two hours of guaranteed autonomy until those reserves, conversion losses and end-of-life capacity are included.
Where batteries add the most value
- They deliver inverter power almost immediately when the utility waveform disappears.
- They bridge the generator start and transfer sequence without an interruption visible to IT equipment.
- They can smooth short disturbances, support peak shaving and reduce generator run hours when the controls and utility tariff justify it.
- They avoid on-site combustion during discharge, which simplifies local-air permitting compared with engines.
Why a 24-hour battery is usually impractical
Every additional hour requires more cells, racks, inverters or parallel strings, cooling, fire protection, floor or yard space and capital. Schneider Electric specifically states that lithium-ion batteries are not well suited to 24-hour backup. Batteries can provide long autonomy at a particular site, but that conclusion requires a load-and-energy calculation rather than a generic runtime claim.
Lifecycle emissions are also conditional. The Innovation for Cool Earth Forum’s October 2025 Sustainable Data Centers Roadmap notes that battery results depend heavily on the electricity used to charge the system. A battery charged from a carbon-intensive grid can have a different lifecycle profile from one charged with low-carbon electricity. Cell replacement, recycling routes and augmentation should be included in a lifecycle assessment.

Battery safety and permitting
Lithium-ion installations require a documented thermal-runaway strategy: cell monitoring, early smoke or off-gas detection, separation distances, ventilation, fire detection and suppression, emergency shutdown and responder access. The exact requirements depend on chemistry, enclosure, jurisdiction and applicable electrical and fire codes. A consumer-scale product listing is not a substitute for an engineered data-center BESS; enterprise systems need studies of fault current, protection coordination, HVAC, fire behavior and integration with the UPS and generators.
PEM fuel cells: clean local operation with hydrogen dependencies
How the system works
A proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cell converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity electrochemically. The installation has more than the stack: hydrogen storage and regulation, air supply, cooling, power electronics, controls and often a UPS. Stored hydrogen can extend runtime without the liquid-fuel tank logistics of a diesel plant, provided the storage quantity, pressure system and delivery plan are adequate.
During normal operation, a hydrogen PEM system has no on-site carbon-dioxide or nitrogen-oxide exhaust. That does not make every hydrogen pathway emissions-free: production, compression, transport and leakage determine upstream impacts. “Green” hydrogen made with low-carbon electricity has a different footprint from hydrogen made from unabated fossil feedstocks.

A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report on distributed generation and combined heat and power in data centers cites a comparison in which PEM-fuel-cell NOx and SOx emissions are less than 1% of those from a diesel engine, while CO2 emissions are 30% lower than a diesel generator. Those are cited comparative results, not a guarantee for every fuel, reformer, operating point or lifecycle boundary.

Economics and durability
A peer-reviewed 2024 study by Yang, Zhao, Nian, Li, Li and Liu modeled fuel-cell replacement of diesel backup in data centers. Under its benchmark assumptions—fuel-cell capital cost of 800 USD/kW, hydrogen at 4.8 USD/kg, diesel at 1.25 USD/L and carbon dioxide valued at 90 USD per ton—the modeled payback was 13.4 years for Tier 1–2 facilities and 13.1 years for Tier 3. These are scenario outputs, not current vendor quotations.
The same study found that Tier 4 feasibility was particularly sensitive to assumptions: a 20.3% reduction in fuel-cell capital cost, a 19.7% increase in diesel price or a 35.5% reduction in green-hydrogen price relative to its benchmark could materially improve the modeled result. Stack replacement timing, degradation, utilization and hydrogen availability can change the outcome, so a site-specific total-cost model is essential.
Hydrogen constraints
- Storage vessels occupy space and introduce pressure, setback and emergency-response requirements.
- Hydrogen deliveries may be less available than diesel deliveries in some regions, especially during a widespread emergency.
- Fuel quality, moisture management, compressors and balance-of-plant components affect availability.
- Permitting must address leak detection, ventilation, ignition control and pressure relief in addition to electrical interconnection.
Why the hybrid UPS-plus-long-duration design is usually fairest
A hybrid architecture assigns each technology the duty it performs best. The UPS batteries carry the critical load through the utility interruption and the standby source’s start sequence. A diesel generator or fuel-cell plant then carries the sustained outage. The battery can be sized for ride-through rather than an uneconomical day of energy, while the long-duration source is sized for the autonomy target and replenishment plan.

A step-by-step way to choose the architecture
- Define the load: Separate truly critical IT and life-safety loads from systems that can shed. Record steady, transient and future loads in kW and kVA.
- Set the outage case: Model the normal utility failure, a regional disaster that blocks deliveries and the longest credible restoration period for the site.
- Choose the ride-through: Size UPS power and usable battery energy for the transfer sequence, controls’ restart behavior and the required reserve at end of life.
- Choose long-duration energy: For diesel, calculate tank volume, replenishment routes and fuel-quality controls. For hydrogen, calculate storage mass, pressure, delivery frequency and production or backup options.
- Engineer redundancy: Test N, N+1 or higher configurations against a single equipment failure, a maintenance outage and common-mode failures such as a shared switchboard or cooling system.
- Check the site: Confirm air permits, exhaust routing, noise limits, fire separation, hydrogen or battery safety distances, flood protection, structural loading and emergency access.
- Model total cost and emissions: Include capital, installation, controls, fuel or hydrogen, electricity for charging, maintenance, stack or battery replacement, permits, testing and end-of-life treatment.
- Validate operations: Write procedures for black-start, transfer, load shedding, refueling, hydrogen delivery, battery isolation, alarms and manual recovery. Prove them with commissioning and realistic load tests.
Cost, carbon and resilience questions to ask vendors
No universal 2026 installed-cost figure is defensible without geography, critical load, outage profile, tariffs, redundancy, autonomy, civil works and vendor bids. Ask each bidder to identify which assumptions drive the result rather than presenting one headline price.
- What is the guaranteed net power and usable energy at the end of the warranty period?
- What autonomy is guaranteed at the stated load, temperature and reserve state?
- Which maintenance tasks require a specialist, and which parts have lead times that could affect recovery?
- How is fuel, hydrogen or charging supply secured during a regional emergency?
- What emissions boundary is used: on-site operation, fuel production, electricity generation, or full lifecycle?
- What tests demonstrate transfer, parallel operation, black-start, load acceptance and operation after a single failure?
- Which permits, fire studies, hazardous-material plans and responder training are included in the project scope?
For procurement research, the phrase “lithium-ion battery energy storage system” describes the relevant technology, but most retail listings are consumer or small-commercial scale. A data-center BESS requires engineering review, integration studies and code-compliant installation rather than a direct purchase from a marketplace listing. A diesel-generator and UPS maintenance handbook can be useful for operational planning, but it does not replace the equipment manufacturer’s procedures or the site’s safety program.
Bottom-line decision rules
- Select diesel when proven long-duration operation, rapid refueling and broad service coverage are the dominant requirements and emissions, noise and permitting can be managed.
- Select lithium-ion batteries for instantaneous ride-through, short outages and flexible power services; treat a battery-only 24-hour design as a special case requiring a detailed energy, safety and lifecycle analysis.
- Select PEM fuel cells when very low local pollutants, quiet operation and stored-hydrogen autonomy justify higher technical and economic complexity, and when hydrogen supply is demonstrably resilient.
- Use a hybrid when the facility needs both seamless transfer and many hours of autonomy. This usually produces a more honest comparison than asking one device to perform both duties.
The most defensible design is the one that meets the availability tier with transparent assumptions about energy, fuel, maintenance, permitting and emissions. Technology labels matter less than the complete electrical and operational system surrounding them.
