“The program can’t start because daqmex.dll is missing”
The daqmex.dll error usually means that MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox is incomplete, damaged, or incompatible with the MATLAB release being used. daqmex.dll is not a Windows system file and should not be downloaded into System32.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches your situation:
- MATLAB or an old MATLAB acquisition script shows the error: Repair or reinstall the matching MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox first.
- MATLAB opens but cannot detect your hardware: Install or repair the correct vendor support package and hardware driver.
- The error began after an update, upgrade, or antivirus alert: Check for mixed MATLAB releases, quarantined files, or an incomplete upgrade.
- The message says “specified module could not be found” even though the file exists: A dependency, vendor driver, or runtime may be missing.
- A packaged MATLAB application reports the error: Repair that application from its original publisher rather than copying a DLL.
- A game, launcher, or unrelated program reports it: Identify the executable producing the message before changing MATLAB or Windows.
- Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC, but do not expect those tools to restore a MATLAB file.
What daqmex.dll is
daqmex.dll is a historical MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox component from The MathWorks, Inc. Older Data Acquisition Toolbox documentation describes the acquisition engine as a MEX or shared-library component used for device objects, event synchronization, and temporary acquisition data.

It is therefore an application file, not part of Windows, DirectX, or the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable. It normally belongs inside the MATLAB installation and should not be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows directory
- An unrelated program folder
Current MATLAB releases emphasize the newer DataAcquisition interface and vendor support packages. Do not assume that every current release should contain this historical filename. Its absence from a modern installation is not automatically evidence of a broken MATLAB installation.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox
This is the safest and most likely solution when MATLAB itself, an old MATLAB script, or a MATLAB-based acquisition workflow reports the error.
Check the installed MATLAB release
- Start MATLAB if it opens.
- Select the Home tab.
- Click Help.
- Select About MATLAB.
- Record the MATLAB release and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, if shown.
You can also enter this command in the MATLAB Command Window:
ver
Look for Data Acquisition Toolbox in the output. If it is absent, the toolbox may not be installed for that MATLAB release.

Use the original MathWorks installer or the installer associated with the exact MATLAB release.
- Close MATLAB.
- Start the installer.
- Sign in with the account or license used for that MATLAB installation.
- Select the same MATLAB release already installed.
- Choose the option to modify, repair, or add products, depending on what the installer displays.
- Select Data Acquisition Toolbox.
- Continue through the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Start MATLAB and run:
ver
which daqmex -all
A successful repair should show Data Acquisition Toolbox in ver. If which daqmex -all returns a path, confirm that the path is inside the intended MATLAB installation rather than a random download folder.
If the installer cannot repair the toolbox, uninstall only the damaged MATLAB release or toolbox through the MathWorks installer, then install the same release again. Preserve your MATLAB projects, scripts, license information, and preferences before performing a clean reinstall.
Do not copy daqmex.dll from another MATLAB release. A file from an older or newer release can have incompatible exports, dependencies, or architecture.

Fix 2: Install the correct hardware support package
Data Acquisition Toolbox alone may not be enough to communicate with a physical device. MathWorks identifies MATLAB, Data Acquisition Toolbox, the vendor support package, a supported device, and a compatible vendor driver as separate requirements.
Install or repair the support package
- Open MATLAB.
- Select Home.
- Click Add-Ons.
- Select Get Hardware Support Packages.
- Search for the package matching your device vendor.
- Select the package.
- Click Install and follow the prompts.
- Restart MATLAB, and restart Windows if requested.
Current support packages include packages for National Instruments NI-DAQmx devices, Analog Devices, Digilent, Measurement Computing, and Windows sound cards.
Rank #2
To manage an existing package:
- Select Home.
- Click Add-Ons.
- Select Manage Add-Ons.
- Find the hardware support package.
- Choose the available update, repair, or removal option.
After installation, open MATLAB and test the hardware listing:
daqvendorlist
daqlist
These commands apply to newer MATLAB interfaces. Older releases may use commands such as:
daq.getDevices
If the vendor does not appear, the support package may be missing, the driver may be incompatible, or the device may not be connected or recognized by Windows.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall the vendor driver
daqmex.dll and a hardware driver are not interchangeable. MATLAB provides the toolbox interface, while the vendor driver communicates with the physical acquisition device.
For National Instruments hardware, NI-DAQmx must match the MATLAB release and the Data Acquisition Toolbox support package. The newest available driver is not automatically the correct driver for an older MATLAB release.
Check the driver in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing your acquisition device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Check Device status for an error message.
If the device has a warning icon:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver version required by your MATLAB release and support package.
- Reconnect the device if necessary.
- Return to MATLAB and run:
daqvendorlist
If you are manually comparing driver versions across several devices, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention. Its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling the correct MATLAB support package remains the definitive fix for a MATLAB-owned component.

Reinstalling NI-DAQmx alone will not recreate a missing MATLAB-owned daqmex.dll.
Fix 4: Check for mixed releases or wrong architecture
A MATLAB toolbox must match the MATLAB release and architecture that loads it. A 32-bit component cannot be repaired reliably by substituting a 64-bit DLL, and the reverse is also true.
Mixed installations can occur when you:
- Copy a MATLAB installation to another computer.
- Upgrade MATLAB but retain an old toolbox.
- Install a toolbox for a different release.
- Restore only part of a MATLAB directory from backup.
- Use an old script with a newer MATLAB installation.
- Install a packaged application alongside a separate MATLAB release.
Check the installation being used:
ver
which daqmex -all
If multiple paths appear, inspect them carefully. Remove old MATLAB paths from the MATLAB search path only when you know they are not needed.
To inspect the current MATLAB search path:
path
Do not replace the file based on version or size claims from a DLL download page. Public listings do not reliably establish one universal build, bitness, or supported release for this historical component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRank #3
The correct repair is to install Data Acquisition Toolbox from the same official installer and release as the MATLAB executable that is producing the error.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine or delete a toolbox file after an update or scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the MATLAB installation directory.
- Confirm that the detected path belongs to your trusted MATLAB installation.
- Restore the file only if its origin is known and the installation is legitimate.
- Run the MATLAB installer repair afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to accept an unknown DLL. If the file was restored but MATLAB still fails, repair the complete toolbox rather than relying on the restored copy.
If a third-party antivirus program is installed, open its quarantine or protection-history screen and perform the same check.

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that daqmex.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of the DLLs that daqmex.dll needs.
Possible dependencies include:
- A vendor hardware driver
- A support-package component
- A runtime required by the MATLAB release
- Another MATLAB library
- A file removed during an incomplete upgrade
First check whether the file is present in the expected MATLAB folder:
which daqmex -all
If MATLAB finds the file but cannot load it, repair Data Acquisition Toolbox and the relevant vendor support package. Then verify the vendor driver in Device Manager.
Do not download individual dependency DLLs from random sources. A missing dependency should be repaired through the MATLAB installer, the vendor’s official driver installer, or the original publisher of a packaged application.

Fix 7: Check Windows components only when other programs are affected
Because daqmex.dll is not a Windows component, Windows repair commands will not restore it. Use them when several unrelated programs fail, Windows reports broader corruption, or other system files are also damaged.
Rank #4
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
If these commands report repaired Windows components, test the original MATLAB problem again. If MATLAB still reports daqmex.dll, return to the MATLAB repair steps. SFC and DISM do not reinstall Data Acquisition Toolbox.

When checking Windows components manually, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional and cannot replace reinstalling MATLAB when the missing file belongs to Data Acquisition Toolbox.
Fix 8: Handle packaged MATLAB applications separately
If the error appears in a standalone MATLAB-based application rather than inside MATLAB, identify the parent executable first.
- Read the title bar and complete error message.
- Note the application name and installation path.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Contact the application’s original publisher or use its original installer.
- Repair or reinstall that application from its official installation media.
A packaged application may require a matching MATLAB Runtime or a bundled dependency. Installing a separate copy of MATLAB or copying daqmex.dll into the application folder may not solve the problem and can create another version conflict.
If a launcher, installer, or game reports this filename, do not assume MATLAB is the caller. Generic DLL messages can identify a filename without clearly explaining which executable requested it.
Do not use regsvr32 for daqmex.dll
Do not run:
regsvr32 daqmex.dll
as a routine fix. regsvr32 is intended for registering certain DLL-based OLE and ActiveX components. daqmex.dll is a MATLAB MEX or toolbox component, not normally a self-registering COM server.
A registration error does not repair a missing MATLAB toolbox, vendor driver, or dependency. Use the MATLAB installer and support-package manager instead.
Why downloading daqmex.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL aggregation sites and file-sharing pages that offer a standalone daqmex.dll download. The file may be:
- Malware or a tampered copy
- From the wrong MATLAB release
- Built for the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Incompatible with your support package
- Placed in a folder where it can affect unrelated programs
There is no supported reason to put this file in System32 or SysWOW64. The safe sources are the original MathWorks installer, an authenticated institutional deployment, the official MATLAB Add-On support-package process, and the original publisher’s installer for a packaged application.
Collect diagnostics for support
If reinstalling does not solve the problem, collect the following before contacting support:
ver
which daqmex -all
daqvendorlist
daqlist
daqsupport
Some commands are release-dependent. If a command is unavailable, record that result rather than repeatedly trying unrelated commands.
Also provide:
- The complete error text
- The executable that displays the error
- The MATLAB release
- Whether MATLAB is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The MATLAB installation path
- The hardware vendor and model
- The vendor driver version
- The support-package version
- The MATLAB installation log
- Any antivirus quarantine record
Do not include passwords, license keys, or unrelated personal files.
Prevention
To avoid another daqmex.dll failure:
- Keep each MATLAB release with its matching toolbox installation.
- Install hardware support packages through MATLAB Add-Ons.
- Confirm driver compatibility before updating vendor software.
- Keep a record of the MATLAB release, architecture, and device driver version.
- Do not move individual MATLAB DLLs between computers.
- Review antivirus quarantine after major MATLAB updates.
- Preserve projects and preferences before a clean reinstall.
- Remove obsolete MATLAB paths when migrating to a new release.
- Keep the original MATLAB installer or authenticated deployment source available.

Only if the full loader error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. The daqmex.dll file itself is not a Microsoft redistributable.
Should I copy daqmex.dll to System32?
No. Copying it there can create version conflicts and does not repair the MATLAB toolbox that owns the file.
Is NI-DAQmx the same as daqmex.dll?
No. NI-DAQmx is the National Instruments hardware driver. daqmex.dll is a MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox component. Both may be required, but they are not interchangeable.
Why does MATLAB say no data acquisition vendors are available?
The support package may be missing, damaged, or incompatible, or the vendor driver may not be installed correctly. Repair Data Acquisition Toolbox, install the matching support package, and check daqvendorlist.

Normally no. This file is not ordinarily registered as an ActiveX or COM component.
Why is the file absent from a current MATLAB installation?
daqmex.dll is associated with older MATLAB data-acquisition implementations. Current releases may use a newer interface and different components, so absence alone does not prove that the installation is damaged.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Install or repair the exact MATLAB release and Data Acquisition Toolbox that produced the error, then install the compatible hardware support package and vendor driver if physical acquisition hardware is involved.
