D-Link’s DIR-822A advisory identifies an L2TP parsing vulnerability, CVE-2026-86510, with firmware version A_101 listed as reported. The vendor says a public proof of concept has been reported, but its advisory—last updated September 21, 2026—still marks the issue under investigation and identifies no fixed firmware version. That means a fix is not identified in the reviewed notice; it does not establish that D-Link will never issue one.
What is the DIR-822A L2TP flaw?
D-Link describes CVE-2026-86510 as an out-of-bounds write in tunnel_set_params, part of the DIR-822A’s L2TP Control Message Parser. The advisory lists firmware version A_101 as the reported version. See D-Link security advisory SAP10516.

D-Link reproduces CVSS severity scores of 9.9 (Critical) under CVSS v3.1 and 9.4 (Critical) under CVSS v4.0. The published vector describes a network attack with low complexity, low privileges required, and no user interaction. These scores characterize the reported vulnerability; they are not evidence that attackers have exploited it.

No. D-Link says a public proof of concept has been reported. The advisory does not establish exploitation in the wild, victim counts, or how widely the issue is being used. Treat the report as a reason to reduce exposure and follow vendor updates, not as proof that a DIR-822A has already been attacked.

Is there a patch for the D-Link DIR-822A L2TP flaw?
The latest reviewed D-Link notice, published September 18 and updated September 21, 2026, lists the matter as “Under Investigation.” It does not identify a fixed firmware version. D-Link says it is checking affected hardware and regional scope, lifecycle status, and whether a firmware update is available or appropriate. Its statement is that it is “reviewing the reported vulnerability, affected product scope, and available remediation options.” Check the advisory and the D-Link support page for your region for newer information.
Is the DIR-822A vulnerable if L2TP is enabled?
The advisory identifies the L2TP parser as the affected component, but the reviewed text does not establish that disabling L2TP alone fully mitigates the flaw or specify the conditions required for exploitation. Do not treat disabling that feature as a verified fix. Reduce unnecessary internet exposure and remote administration while awaiting clearer vendor guidance.

What should DIR-822A owners do now?
- Confirm the exact device. Read the model and hardware revision from the router label or its web interface, then check the installed firmware version. D-Link’s report names DIR-822A and A_101; similarly named DIR-822 variants are not interchangeable.
- Reduce exposure. D-Link advises owners to ensure the device is not unnecessarily exposed to the public internet. Restrict remote management unless it is needed.
- Limit administration access. Use network controls to allow router administration only from trusted systems.
- Watch regional support notices. Check D-Link support for your region for updates on scope, lifecycle, and remediation.
- Install only a matching firmware release. If D-Link publishes an update, confirm it is for the exact model and hardware revision before installing it. D-Link cautions that firmware can differ across hardware revisions; do not use a file for a similarly named model.
Does the older DIR-822 end-of-life notice apply to DIR-822A?
Not on the evidence in the notices reviewed. D-Link’s 2024 lifecycle notice covers specified DIR-822 A/B variants outside the US and separately lists US/Canada C/E revisions. It does not establish the DIR-822A’s lifecycle. In the newer DIR-822A advisory, D-Link says lifecycle and product scope remained under confirmation. See D-Link’s DIR-822 lifecycle notice alongside the DIR-822A advisory; do not infer the A model’s status from the older notice.

If D-Link confirms that your specific router is end-of-life or end-of-support, it recommends retirement and replacement. Replacing it may also be a choice you make independently, but the reviewed notices do not name a successor model. Compare candidates using the manufacturer’s security-support commitment, exact hardware and firmware compatibility, and fit for your network rather than assuming a particular router is endorsed.

Keep this L2TP issue separate from another DIR-822A vulnerability
CVE-2026-86296 concerns a stack-based buffer overflow in the DIR-822A’s udhcpcd component. It is a separate issue and does not establish the patch status or exploitation status of CVE-2026-86510. The GitHub Advisory Database entry for CVE-2026-86296 describes that other vulnerability.
