The Blood of Dawnwalker is a single-player dark fantasy action RPG that launched on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Reviews point to an appealing story and atmosphere, but also uneven open-world design, combat, and technical roughness. Whether it is worth buying depends on how much you value its premise and writing—and how much roughness you are willing to accept.
What kind of game is The Blood of Dawnwalker?
Developed by Rebel Wolves and published by Bandai Namco, The Blood of Dawnwalker is the studio’s first game. It is set in 14th-century Europe, in Vale Sangora, a fictional region of the Carpathian Mountains. You play Coen, who is human by day and vampire by night. The publisher says the day-and-night cycle and player choices shape both the story and gameplay; Coen’s central aim is to save his family from the vampire lord Brencis.

That dual identity is the game’s defining hook: it frames the adventure around changing abilities and circumstances rather than a conventional fantasy hero. The publisher describes it as an open-world action RPG, but that label alone does not guarantee a uniformly lively or polished world.

Is The Blood of Dawnwalker worth buying?
Published reviews describe a game with a strong reason to keep playing—the writing and atmosphere—alongside weaknesses that may frustrate players expecting a consistently polished open-world RPG.
#1 Best Overall
- Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
- Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
- Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
- Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.
What the Xbox Series X review says
Tom’s Guide reviewed the Xbox Series X version. Its assessment finds the game compelling while criticizing what it calls a barren open world, clunky combat, and technical rough edges. Its verdict is conditional: the story may be worth those compromises for some players, but the roughness is central to the buying decision. Read Tom’s Guide’s Xbox Series X review.
What the PS5 review says
Creative Bloq reviewed the PS5 version and describes a handsome, sprawling medieval setting with hamlets, towers, castles, forests, caves, and mountain passes. It also finds the game difficult to separate from comparisons with The Witcher 3: that familiarity can be appealing, but it can also make the game feel limited by its influences. Read Creative Bloq’s PS5 review.

- Every action counts - every action - and every inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family's days are numbered, and every time you take a quest, time progresses and brings you closer to the end. Choose carefully who you help and who you leave behind. You won't have time for all. The world is waiting for no one. And neither does evil.
- Sword, claws and anger - Defy gravity, become a brutal force of nature and use your supernatural abilities as a vampire. Or raise your sword and use powerful magic to take on your opponents as a human being. Experiment and adapt as your shape changes throughout the day and night; each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
- Open world full of adventure - venture through the handmade open world and discover everything it has to offer. Stroll through the lush forests, the vast plains, the treacherous swamps and explore the steep mountain peaks and medieval settlements. Explore forgotten ruins, find remains of an ancient civilization, and uncover a truth that might have preferred to remain hidden.

They do not establish which console runs better, nor do they provide current frame-rate, resolution, or patch-performance findings for every platform. The publisher noted a major day-one patch in its launch release, but that announcement does not show how later builds perform.

Which edition should you buy?
The publisher’s edition page documents a standard game and several editions or add-ons with physical or digital extras. It does not establish current local pricing, stock, or whether an edition represents good value. Compare the contents against the price and availability shown by an authorized retailer in your region.

|---|---|---|
| Standard | Base game. | Players who want the game without the listed bonus items. |
| Day 1 Edition (physical) | Base game, steelbook, world map, and an early unlock for the Sangoran Wayfarer’s Armor Set. The publisher says the armor can also be obtained later in-game; participating-retailer availability is limited by stock. | Players who want the physical extras and do not mind checking local stock. |
| Eclipse digital upgrade/content | Digital world compendium, digital comic book, digital soundtrack, and the same early-unlock armor bonus. | Players interested in the digital extras; check the listing for how the upgrade is sold in your region. |
| Collector’s Edition (physical) | Base game, steelbook, 33 × 40 cm world map, 23 cm Purearts Coen figurine in a collector box, 60-page hardcover physical world compendium, plus the Eclipse digital content. | Collectors who specifically want the physical display items and book. |
The armor bonus is an early unlock, not exclusive equipment according to the publisher. The Collector’s Edition adds substantial physical memorabilia, so its appeal depends on whether you want those items—not on an established gameplay advantage. Review the publisher’s edition details and confirm current regional price and availability before ordering.
