The biggest examples are Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which can use multiple wireless links, and 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band. To benefit, the router and client both need compatible hardware and support—and 320 MHz operation also depends on local 6 GHz rules. There is no reliable current figure establishing that “almost nobody” can use these features, so treat that phrase as a warning to check your own devices, not as a measured adoption statistic.
What makes Wi‑Fi 7 different?
Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED 7 highlights three capabilities: 320 MHz channels, Multi-Link Operation (MLO), and 4K QAM. They describe what compatible equipment may support, not a speed or reliability guarantee for every connection. The Wi‑Fi Alliance says 4K QAM can achieve 20% higher transmission rates than 1024 QAM; actual results still depend on the equipment and connection conditions. Wi‑Fi Alliance’s 2024 announcement also forecast more than 233 million Wi‑Fi 7 devices entering the market in 2024 and 2.1 billion by 2028. Those were forecasts, not verified adoption counts.

Multi-Link Operation
MLO lets compatible devices use multiple links. The Wi‑Fi Alliance describes it as a way to increase throughput, reduce latency, and improve reliability. Whether a particular connection can do that depends on both the router and the client supporting the relevant MLO capability.

A 320 MHz channel is a wide channel in the 6 GHz band. It can provide substantial capacity, but it is usable only where 6 GHz is available for Wi‑Fi and where the router and client support the feature. A router’s Wi‑Fi 7 label alone does not establish that every client can connect on a 320 MHz channel.

Why your devices may not use the router’s best features
Wireless capability is shared between the access point and the client. A router cannot add a 6 GHz radio or MLO support to a phone, computer, or other device that lacks it. TP-Link’s US support guidance says 6 GHz Wi‑Fi is supported on Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7 devices, while older clients can still connect using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. It advises checking the client manufacturer’s specifications; this is vendor guidance, not a survey of how many users have compatible devices. TP-Link’s compatibility guidance also notes that MLO is available on Wi‑Fi 7 Deco products and that some models or features may require compatible firmware.
Compatibility is feature-specific. A client might support Wi‑Fi 7 but not every band, channel width, or MLO mode offered by a router. Check the exact router and client specifications, including firmware requirements, rather than assuming that a shared standard label means every feature will work.

What real-world Wi‑Fi 7 trial results show
Trials show what Wi‑Fi 7 can do under particular conditions—not what every household should expect. In a Wireless Broadband Alliance announcement dated February 10, 2025, CableLabs and Intel described testing Wi‑Fi 7 and Wi‑Fi 6E in a 4,500-square-foot, two-story home. The access point sat in a first-floor corner office, with clients at fixed locations. The trial reported up to 3.7 Gbps downlink at close proximity using a 320 MHz channel and more than 2 Gbps at typical residential distances on the same floor. These are results from that test setup, not a household speed promise.

The test examined wall attenuation, active interference, and traffic from multiple devices; the MLO setup used 5 GHz and 6 GHz simultaneously and was designed to improve resilience and latency. The Alliance characterized the potential as “wired-like reliability,” but that is a description of trial potential, not a guarantee for consumers.

Channel width is also a deployment choice. In an April 30, 2025 announcement, the WBA said its higher-density enterprise trial focused on 160 MHz channels in 6 GHz, noting that 320 MHz channels would be more common in smaller networks. A wider channel is therefore not automatically the best setting in every environment.
How to check whether your setup can use Wi‑Fi 7 features
- Look up the client’s exact wireless specifications. Check the phone, laptop, or other device maker’s documentation for Wi‑Fi 7 support, 6 GHz capability, supported channel widths, and MLO support. Do this for the specific feature you want; the Wi‑Fi 7 label by itself is not enough.
- Check the router’s feature and firmware details. Confirm that the exact router model supports the band, channel width, or MLO mode you intend to use, and note any firmware requirements. Feature availability can vary between models.
- Account for local spectrum rules. Verify whether 6 GHz Wi‑Fi is available in your country before expecting to use 320 MHz channels. The Wi‑Fi Alliance describes 320 MHz channels as available in countries that make 6 GHz available to Wi‑Fi.
- Consider distance, walls, and competing traffic. A trial result at close range or in a particular home layout may not transfer to a different room or building. Channel width and interference affect what a client can achieve.
- Check the wired path too. Compare the router’s wired port speeds with your broadband plan and other wired equipment. Wireless features cannot remove a bottleneck elsewhere in the connection.

- Local 6 GHz availability: Confirm that 6 GHz Wi‑Fi is permitted and available where the router will operate.
- Coverage and layout: Consider where devices connect, how many walls or floors separate them from the router, and whether the home needs a single access point or a broader coverage arrangement.
- Wired speeds: Match the router’s ports to the broadband plan and wired devices so a port does not unnecessarily limit the connection.
- Deployment density: In a busy environment, the widest channel is not necessarily the right choice. Channel planning depends on the surrounding network conditions.
Wi‑Fi 7’s features are real capabilities, but they are not automatically delivered to every device that joins a Wi‑Fi 7 router. The practical test is whether your router, client, local spectrum rules, and connection conditions all support the feature you want.
