They are a customary group of prestigious one-day races, not a distinct race format: each has its own terrain, route character and place in the season. In broad terms, Milan-San Remo tests endurance before a late-race selection; Flanders combines cobbled roads with steep climbs; Roubaix centers on rough pavé; Liège is a long, hilly Ardennes race; and Il Lombardia is the autumn climbing classic.
What does “Monument” mean in cycling?
“Monument” is the established name for five especially historic and prestigious one-day races. It tells you that the event belongs to a celebrated group, but it does not describe a unique format with a standard distance, route, surface or set of rules. The five races differ substantially, and their routes change from one edition to another.

The label is customary rather than a separate race class in the material cited here. There is, however, a formal ranking distinction: the Union Cycliste Internationale’s 2026 road regulations assign a winner of one of these WorldTour one-day races 800 UCI points, compared with 500 points for the winner of the next listed WorldTour one-day group. That ranking value is evidence of their sporting importance under the 2026 rules; it is not itself the definition of “Monument.”
The group is widely associated with the toughest one-day racing and a deep history. Its significance also comes from the variety it represents: the same label covers a near-300-kilometre endurance test, cobbled races, a hilly Ardennes classic and a late-season mountain-oriented event.

How the five Monuments differ
| Race | Season setting | Core character | What the race tends to reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milan-San Remo | Italian spring, traditionally March | A very long race with a selective finale | Endurance, timing and the ability to make or follow a late move |
| Tour of Flanders | Belgian spring | Cobbles combined with repeated short, steep climbs | Positioning and repeated hard accelerations |
| Paris-Roubaix | Northern French spring | Rough pavé sectors and a finish at the Roubaix velodrome | Technical control and the ability to cope with the sectors’ demands |
| Liège-Bastogne-Liège | Belgian Ardennes, in April | A long, hilly race on roads less defined by cobbles | Climbing strength over repeated ascents |
| Il Lombardia | Italian autumn | A late-season race shaped by climbing | Climbing ability over longer ascents than the short power climbs associated with Flanders |
These are descriptions of each race’s broad identity, not promises about a particular edition. Organisers can alter distances, climbs, starts and finishes. To understand the exact challenge in a given year, use that edition’s route rather than treating a general description as a permanent specification.
Why is Milan-San Remo different?
Milan-San Remo is the first Monument of the men’s season and is traditionally held in March. It is the longest of the five: Cyclingnews describes it as almost 300 km, an approximate characterization accessed in 2026, not a fixed distance that applies to every edition. The men’s race began in 1907.
Its defining contrast is between the length of the day and the timing of the decisive action. The route’s late climbs, the Cipressa and the Poggio, give riders an opportunity to attack or force a selection after a long approach. A rider may need to conserve energy for much of the race, then be able to respond when the finale becomes more selective. That makes the event a different kind of test from a race built around repeated cobbled climbs or sustained hills throughout.
The climbs do not guarantee a particular outcome. A late attack, a group staying together or a sprint scenario can depend on the edition’s route and how the race unfolds. The useful point is that Milan-San Remo combines exceptional overall length with a finale that offers opportunities to change the race.

What separates the Tour of Flanders from Paris-Roubaix?
Both are northern European cobbled classics, but “cobbled race” is too broad to capture their differences. Flanders pairs cobbled roads with repeated short, steep climbs. Roubaix is distinguished by its rough pavé sectors and its finish in the Roubaix velodrome. Their terrain patterns change the demands placed on riders and shape how a race can develop.
Tour of Flanders: repeated climbs and position
In Flanders, climbs and cobbles are linked in a repeating challenge. The short, steep ascents prompt hard accelerations, while riders also need to be well positioned before the key climbs. It is therefore not just a matter of having enough power for one hill: the race asks riders to handle multiple efforts and contest position as the course narrows its opportunities to move forward.
This pattern helps explain why Flanders is often associated with riders who can combine power, resilience and tactical awareness. That is a description of the demands, not an eligibility rule or a guarantee that a particular rider type will win. Specific climb sequences and locations should be checked against the current organiser’s route map rather than assumed from the race name.
Paris-Roubaix: rough pavé as the central challenge
In Roubaix, the defining feature is the roughness and technical challenge of the pavé sectors. The men’s course is described by Cyclingnews as nearly 260 km; this is a general route description accessed in 2026, not a guaranteed annual distance. The finish at the Roubaix velodrome is another part of the event’s distinctive identity.

Compared with Flanders, the distinction is not that one race has cobbles and the other does not. Rather, Flanders emphasizes cobbles interwoven with short, steep climbs, while Roubaix is known for rough pavé sectors on a route that is not principally defined by those repeated climbing efforts. That shifts attention toward handling and coping with the sectors’ technical and mechanical demands. Neither terrain label makes the race easy to predict: the actual route and race situation still matter.
The women’s Paris-Roubaix also illustrates why edition dates matter when quoting a distance. Cyclingnews reports 116 km for the 2021 women’s edition and nearly 150 km for the 2025 edition. Those are figures for those specific editions, not a single standard distance for the event.
How is Liège-Bastogne-Liège different from the cobbled races?
Liège-Bastogne-Liège, known as La Doyenne, is a long, hilly race through eastern Belgium’s Ardennes. Cyclingnews dates its first edition to 1892, making it the oldest first edition among the five in the cited guide. Rather than being identified by the rough pavé challenge of the northern classics, it is known for repeated climbing on smoother roads.

Compared with the shorter, punchier climbs associated with Flanders, Liège’s hilly character is more suited to riders who can climb repeatedly over a long race.

That contrast is useful, but it should not be turned into a rigid rule about winners. The climbs on a given route, how they are placed and the way the race develops all affect the contest. Use the current edition’s route for exact distances and climb details.
Why is Il Lombardia the autumn Monument?
Il Lombardia stands apart on the calendar: it is the autumn Monument, while the other four are spring races. It is known as a climber’s classic and features longer ascents than the short power climbs associated with Flanders. That makes climbing ability central to its broad identity, while its late-season position gives it a distinct place in the annual calendar.
Il Lombardia’s course and distance vary with the edition. No fixed route specification should be inferred from its general reputation; check the current organiser information before relying on a particular climb list or distance. The seasonal distinction is more stable as an identity than any one year’s course details.

No. The current overview cited by Cyclingnews reports women’s editions of four of the five races, with no women’s Il Lombardia listed. The history differs by event: the women’s Tour of Flanders began in 2004, the women’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2017, women’s Paris-Roubaix in 2021 and the revived women’s Milan-San Remo in 2024. The women’s calendar should be described separately rather than assumed to mirror the men’s. Event status can change as organisers add or alter races, so confirm the current calendar close to the season being discussed. The women’s Paris-Roubaix distance examples above also show why it is important to attribute a figure to an edition rather than present it as permanent.
How should you compare the Monuments?
There is no single useful answer to which Monument is “hardest.” The races test different combinations of endurance, climbing, positioning and technical skill, and a particular year’s route can change the balance. A more useful comparison is to ask what kind of challenge defines each race and then consider the actual course.
- For an endurance-first test: look to Milan-San Remo, whose exceptional length precedes a late-race selection opportunity.
- For repeated short, steep efforts: the Tour of Flanders combines cobbles and climbs, making positioning before key ascents important.
- For rough pavé sectors: Paris-Roubaix has a technical challenge centered on its sectors and a distinctive velodrome finish.
- For repeated hilly climbing: Liège-Bastogne-Liège is the Ardennes option, with a succession of ascents rather than a cobbled-race identity.
- For a late-season climbing classic: Il Lombardia occupies the autumn slot and is known for longer ascents than Flanders’ short power climbs.
For a current edition, check the organiser’s route and compare its distance, climb profile, road surfaces and start and finish locations. That gives a more precise account than relying on broad labels alone. The Monument name tells you why the race matters historically; the edition’s route tells you what the riders actually face.
