Short answer: the original DJI Neo can be flown without a conventional controller using palm gestures or the DJI Fly app over Wi‑Fi, but a dedicated remote is better for precise, repeatable flying. DJI lists the RC‑N3, RC‑N2 and RC 2 as compatible remotes. FPV-style control requires the right goggles and controller combination. DJI rates the battery for approximately 18 minutes in controlled conditions (about 17 minutes with propeller guards), so the Fly More Combo is mainly a convenience package for buyers who need an RC‑N3, three total batteries and a charging hub.
This guide covers the original DJI Neo, not newer products with similar names. Confirm that every controller, battery, hub and replacement part explicitly says it supports the original Neo before ordering.

Which ways can you control DJI Neo?
Neo has three practical control modes: hands-free palm control, smartphone control through DJI Fly, and dedicated DJI controllers. They are not interchangeable in capability. Palm control is aimed at quick automated shots, the app is useful for casual short-range flying, and a remote gives you physical sticks, more predictable input and a better view of flight information.

Palm control lets you launch, guide and land the aircraft with the supported hand gestures. It is the least equipment-intensive option and suits short clips where you want to get moving quickly. Because you are relying on gesture recognition and automated flight behavior rather than two-stick input, it is not the best choice for tight positioning, practice, or flying in a busy area. Keep the aircraft in an open space and within visual line of sight.

DJI Fly on a phone
The original Neo can connect to a smartphone over Wi‑Fi and be flown through DJI Fly. DJI’s beginner guide gives an effective operating range of up to 50 m, but that is not a universal guarantee: distance and image quality depend on the phone’s Wi‑Fi performance and the surrounding radio environment. Treat the figure as a manufacturer guideline, not a promise that every phone will maintain a usable link at 50 m.
Phone control is convenient when you do not want to purchase a remote. It is also the control path most sensitive to your handset’s compatibility, battery level, screen visibility and wireless interference. Download the current DJI Fly app and check DJI’s supported-device and operating-system list before buying; those lists can change.
Dedicated remote control
A compatible DJI remote gives you physical control sticks and a purpose-built control link. DJI’s compatibility information lists the following standard remotes for the Neo series:

DJI’s compatibility article lists DJI Goggles N3 and DJI Goggles 3 in the motion/FPV ecosystem. It also states that when Neo is used with DJI RC Motion 3 or DJI FPV Remote Controller 3, DJI Goggles 3 is required. Because compatibility is combination-specific, do not assume that owning one controller or one set of goggles makes every other pairing work; check DJI’s current compatibility page and firmware notes for the exact setup.
Which controller should you buy?
Choose no remote if convenience is the priority
If your flights are short, nearby and mostly automated, palm control or DJI Fly may be enough. This avoids the cost and storage of a dedicated transmitter. You still need a supported phone for app setup and control, and you must accept the shorter, phone-dependent operating experience.

Choose RC-N3 for conventional flying
RC-N3 is the straightforward choice when you want physical sticks without moving into an FPV goggles setup. It works with a phone connected by the supplied cable, so your handset remains part of the system for the live view and app interface. For many first-time buyers, this is the most understandable upgrade from palm or app control.
Consider RC-N2 or RC 2 only after checking ownership and support
If you already own an RC-N2 or RC 2, DJI lists those models as usable with Neo through O4 video transmission. Verify original-Neo support, current firmware and the required cable or account setup before relying on an existing remote. A similar model name does not prove cross-generation compatibility.

Use motion or FPV gear only for a deliberate FPV setup
Motion control and FPV remotes add goggles, pairing steps and stricter compatibility requirements. They make sense if you already use DJI’s FPV ecosystem and specifically want that control style. Buying a motion controller by itself is not a complete Neo control solution; the required goggles and the exact DJI pairing rules still apply.
How long does the DJI Neo battery last?
DJI specifies the Neo Intelligent Flight Battery at 1,435 mAh, approximately 45 g, 7.3 V nominal voltage and 10.5 Wh. The aircraft’s approximate takeoff weight is 135 g.
DJI’s maximum-flight-time figure is approximately 18 minutes. With propeller guards fitted, DJI lists approximately 17 minutes. These are manufacturer results under controlled conditions: windless-equivalent testing, forward flight at 2 m/s, the camera in Photo mode and a run to forced landing after battery depletion. DJI says actual experience varies with the environment, use and firmware. The figures are therefore best treated as upper-bound test results, not a typical promise for every flight.

There is no independent runtime test established for this guide. Cold weather, wind, repeated acceleration, high-speed flight, propeller guards and the battery reserve used for landing can all reduce the usable time before you choose to land. Plan each session around a landing margin rather than trying to consume the entire displayed percentage.
How quickly can you recharge Neo batteries?
Charging one battery through Neo
DJI’s beginner guide says one battery takes approximately one hour to charge through the aircraft when using a recommended USB Power Delivery charger rated at least 30 W. A lower-power adapter can increase the wait or fail to provide the expected charging behavior.
Charging three batteries with the Two-Way Charging Hub
With DJI’s 65 W portable charger, the Two-Way Charging Hub can fully charge three batteries in approximately 60 minutes, according to DJI. The hub manages the batteries rather than necessarily charging every cell at the same rate throughout the cycle.
Why charger wattage matters
DJI’s specification FAQ cautions that the number of batteries charged simultaneously depends on charger power and supported charging protocols. With less than 45 W, only two batteries can be charged simultaneously. If you plan to use a third-party USB-C charger, check both its output profile and its sustained wattage; a high headline wattage that does not support the required protocol may not deliver the expected result.

Is the DJI Neo Fly More Combo worth it?
The Fly More Combo is a bundle decision, not a performance upgrade. DJI’s beginner guide says it adds two flight batteries, a Two-Way Charging Hub and an RC-N3 controller with cable compared with the single-product option. The DJI Store listing observed on October 13, 2026 showed three batteries total, one RC-N3, one USB-C RC cable and one Two-Way Charging Hub.

That listing showed a price of US$374 and was marked out of stock at the time. It was a regional, time-sensitive snapshot, not a permanent global price or availability statement. Check the DJI Store or authorized local listings immediately before purchase, and compare like-for-like contents in your currency.

Do not assume the bundle saves money until you compare the current local prices of the exact individual items. Prices, stock and package contents can change by region. The practical value is clear when you need both a dedicated controller and more ready-to-use batteries; it is less compelling when you already own a compatible remote or fly only occasional short sessions.
What do you need before the first flight?
- Confirm the model. Make sure the listing, battery and accessories explicitly identify the original DJI Neo. Do not infer compatibility from a product name that merely includes “Neo.”
- Check your phone. DJI Fly requires a supported operating system and device. DJI’s current Fly page contains the minimum OS versions and recommended models; review it with the exact phone you intend to use.
- Install DJI Fly and activate Neo. DJI requires first-use activation in DJI Fly and recommends keeping the mobile device connected to the internet during activation.
- Update before leaving home. Complete firmware prompts while you have a stable internet connection and sufficient battery charge. If a controller or goggles set is involved, update and pair each component according to DJI’s current instructions.
- Charge and inspect. Charge the flight battery, controller and phone. Check that propellers, guards and the battery latch are secure, and remove transport packaging before powering up.
- Choose a suitable launch area. DJI recommends an open area and visual line of sight. Keep people, trees, wires, buildings and water hazards out of the planned flight path.
- Perform a short test hover. Use the first battery to verify control response, live-view stability, return or landing behavior and the position of the controls before attempting longer automated shots.
DJI’s Neo downloads page lists User Manual version 1.2 dated November 6, 2024, and Safety Guidelines version 1.2 dated February 19, 2025. Manuals and software can be revised, so use the newest version DJI provides for your region rather than relying only on an older printed guide.

No obstacle avoidance
DJI’s official FAQ answers the question “Does DJI Neo support obstacle avoidance?” with “No.” Propeller guards, a small airframe or subject-tracking features do not turn into obstacle sensors. Neo will not reliably detect and brake for a tree, wall, cable or person. You remain responsible for the flight path.
Visual line of sight remains important
Keep Neo where you can see its attitude and surroundings directly. App range, controller range and a stable video feed do not remove the need to monitor the aircraft. A connection can remain active while the aircraft is moving toward an unseen hazard.

Propeller guards are not a safety system
Guards can protect propellers during suitable low-risk flying, but DJI’s own maximum-time figure drops from approximately 18 to approximately 17 minutes with guards. They also add bulk and can change how the aircraft responds to wind. Fit them when the situation calls for them, and plan the shorter endurance accordingly.
Common buying and setup mistakes
Assuming every DJI remote works
Only the models and combinations DJI lists should be treated as supported. A remote that works with another O4 aircraft may still need a firmware update, a particular goggles pairing or may not support the Neo at all.
Confusing battery capacity with flight time
The 1,435 mAh figure describes stored charge, not a guaranteed number of minutes in the air. The 18-minute result comes from DJI’s controlled test procedure. Use the stated conditions and the 17-minute guarded figure when planning, rather than converting capacity directly into a personal runtime promise.

The Two-Way Charging Hub cannot overcome an underpowered or incompatible adapter. Under 45 W, DJI says only two batteries can be charged simultaneously. Check the charger’s USB PD support before assuming a three-battery, one-hour cycle.
Ordering a part for the wrong Neo generation
Newer products in the Neo family can have different batteries, hubs, firmware and accessories. Confirm “original DJI Neo” compatibility on the seller’s page and on DJI’s documentation. This is especially important for spare batteries and replacement propellers.
Skipping activation until the flight site
Activation requires DJI Fly, and DJI recommends an internet-connected mobile device. Complete activation and updates at home. Doing so avoids a first-flight delay caused by weak cellular service, an unsupported phone or an account sign-in problem.
How to decide in one minute
- Want the simplest occasional flights? Start with palm control or DJI Fly, provided your phone is supported.
- Want reliable stick control? Choose RC-N3, or use an RC-N2 or RC 2 you already own after verifying compatibility.
- Need several flights before a wall outlet? Prioritize spare Intelligent Flight Batteries; add the Two-Way Charging Hub when you need to recharge several at once.
- Want FPV goggles and motion control? Budget for the complete DJI-approved controller-and-goggles combination, with special attention to DJI’s Goggles 3 requirement for the specified RC Motion 3 and FPV Remote Controller 3 use cases.
- Expect autonomous collision protection? Do not buy Neo for that purpose; DJI explicitly says it has no obstacle avoidance.
Care and replacement planning
Use only batteries and charging accessories identified for the original Neo. Store batteries in a cool, dry place, inspect them for swelling or damage, and stop using a battery that has been dropped or physically compromised. When a propeller is damaged, replace it with a model-specific DJI Neo replacement propeller and check that the motor turns freely before flight. A replacement part is a maintenance purchase, not a substitute for preflight inspection.

Keep the aircraft, controller and phone firmware aligned where DJI requires it. If a previously working controller stops connecting after an update, check the current compatibility table, update every relevant component, restart the pairing process and verify that the phone is running a supported DJI Fly version. If the live view becomes unreliable, shorten the distance, move away from radio interference and test with another supported phone before assuming the aircraft is defective.
