David Martinez dies during the assault on Arasaka Tower. He uses the cyber-skeleton and his remaining strength to keep Adam Smasher occupied while Falco gets Lucy to safety. Rebecca is killed during the escape, while Lucy survives and later reaches the Moon alone—the destination she and David once imagined together. The finale is tragic closure, not a hidden-survival reveal.
What happens at the end of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?
The final operation sends David’s crew into Arasaka Tower to rescue Lucy and stop the corporation’s pursuit. David is already physically and mentally damaged by repeated chrome upgrades, but he activates the cyber-skeleton for one last stand. The machine gives him overwhelming force while accelerating the breakdown that has been building throughout the series.

Adam Smasher arrives as Arasaka’s decisive weapon. David cannot defeat him. Instead, he uses the cyber-skeleton and his last reserves to delay Smasher long enough for Falco to extract Lucy. That decision defines the ending: David spends his final moments creating a chance for Lucy to live rather than trying to escape with her or preserve himself.
Rebecca is killed by Smasher during the retreat. Her death closes the crew’s collapse and shows how completely the assault has turned against the edgerunners. Falco succeeds in getting Lucy away, but he cannot return for David.

Afterward, Lucy reaches the Moon alone. The scene fulfills the dream she and David shared, but its meaning has changed. What was once a promise of a future together becomes Lucy’s memorial to him.
Is David really dead?
Yes. Adam Smasher kills David after David has made it possible for Lucy to escape. The anime does not show David surviving, being reconstructed or continuing as a digital personality.
Some viewers interpret the series’ technology as leaving room for an engram or another copy of David. That possibility is not established by the official story material associated with the anime. No cited official source confirms that his consciousness was preserved, that he returns in Cyberpunk 2077, or that the final Moon sequence hides a survival reveal.
What happened to Rebecca?
Rebecca is crushed by Adam Smasher during the Arasaka Tower escape. Her death occurs while the remaining crew is trying to get Lucy out, making it part of the same failed assault that ends David’s life.
Rebecca’s fate also matters thematically. She remains fiercely loyal to David even as his implants and decisions pull him away from the person he was. Smasher’s casual destruction of her emphasizes the enormous power gap between disposable mercenaries and the corporation’s military hardware.

Why does Lucy go to the Moon?
Lucy’s Moon dream appears early as both a personal goal and a private bond with David. She wants to leave Night City and experience a place untouched by the city’s violence. David eventually adopts that dream as something they could share.
When Lucy reaches the Moon after the assault, the destination is real but the imagined future is not. She experiences the achievement without David beside her. The sequence therefore works as an emotional epilogue rather than a clue that he survived. Its silence and isolation turn a romantic fantasy into remembrance.

What the ending says about David’s choices
Chrome as protection
David’s upgrades begin as a way to survive and protect people around him. Each new implant lets him take on work, defend the crew and move closer to the status that Night City rewards. Chrome appears to solve immediate problems, so escalating feels practical rather than irrational.
Chrome as a trap
The same escalation steadily damages David’s body and mind. His vulnerability to cyberpsychosis grows, and the corporation can treat him as an increasingly powerful but expendable asset. His strength makes him useful to Arasaka’s interests even while he believes he is acting independently.

His final act
CD PROJEKT RED’s official story description frames the series around how far a person can push physical and emotional limits, and what the pursuit of fame in a city ruled by greed and contempt for human life produces. David’s last decision answers that question. He cannot win or preserve the life he wanted, but he can choose whose life his remaining strength protects. Buying Lucy’s freedom is the one act in the finale that is not motivated by status.
How Cyberpunk: Edgerunners connects to Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an official, standalone 10-episode story set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED announced it as a story about a street kid trying to survive in a future city obsessed with technology and body modification; Netflix uses the same standalone framing.
That relationship means the anime and game share Night City, its social order, corporate power structures and cybernetic technology. The anime is not a retelling of the game’s campaign, and David is not a version of the player character. David’s story is linear and fixed, while the game follows V through an interactive role-playing campaign with player-controlled choices.
The Edgerunners Update
The connection became playable through the Edgerunners Update. The official PlayStation and CD PROJEKT RED material documents four deliberate links:
- David’s bright yellow jacket, inherited from his mother Gloria, was added as a legendary wardrobe item.
- Rebecca’s shotgun, named “Guts,” became a discoverable weapon.
- A new quest leads players to David’s jacket and uses a braindance clip from the anime.
- Item descriptions, dialogue and quest placement were written to connect the game material with the series.
These are canon-facing references inside the game, not merely cosmetic easter eggs. Franchise and Lore Designer Patrick Mills described the jacket as a tactile way for players to feel connected to the anime’s story.

Adam Smasher is the clearest character bridge
Adam Smasher appears in both stories as an Arasaka enforcer. In the anime, he is the force that ends David’s assault. In Cyberpunk 2077, he is a major antagonist in V’s campaign. His presence makes the shared timeline and corporate hierarchy immediately recognizable, although the player’s confrontation with him belongs to V’s separate story.
Anime versus game: what is shared and what is different?
| Aspect | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | Cyberpunk 2077 |
|---|---|---|
| Protagonist | David Martinez, a fixed character whose decisions drive the tragedy | V, a player-created protagonist whose choices shape the campaign |
| Format | Standalone, linear 10-episode anime | Interactive role-playing game with branching decisions and exploration |
| Setting | Night City and its technology- and body-modification-obsessed culture | The same Night City, explored through V’s missions and open-world activities |
| Cyberpsychosis and corporate power | Shown through David’s chrome escalation, mental deterioration and exploitation | Explored through V’s missions, characters, lore and gameplay systems |
| Direct crossover | Introduces David, Lucy, Rebecca and their crew | Includes the Edgerunners Update, anime references, David’s jacket, Rebecca’s Guts shotgun and a connecting quest |
The shared setting does not make the two narratives interchangeable. You can understand David’s ending without playing the game, and you can complete V’s campaign without watching the anime. The update rewards fans who do both by placing physical reminders of the series in the game world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where do you find David’s jacket in Cyberpunk 2077?
David’s jacket is obtained through the dedicated Edgerunners Update quest content documented by CD PROJEKT RED and PlayStation. The quest leads to the legendary wardrobe item and incorporates a braindance clip from the anime.
- Install the game update that contains the Edgerunners content.
- Start the dedicated quest added by that update.
- Follow its objectives to the location associated with David’s story.
- Collect the yellow jacket when the quest makes it available and equip it from the wardrobe menu.
The official documentation establishes the quest, the jacket and the anime braindance material. It does not establish a different ending for David or a playable version of his consciousness.

Canon, chronology and theories
When does the anime take place?
The anime is best treated as an official tie-in set before the player’s 2077-era story. It uses the same city and institutions while following a different group of characters. The update’s references are designed to fit that shared continuity.

Is David in the game?
David is not the protagonist of Cyberpunk 2077, and the cited official material does not confirm that he appears as a surviving person or engram. The game connection is expressed through the update’s quest, jacket, shotgun, braindance and related dialogue.
Does the final shot hide a sequel setup?
No official source cited for the ending confirms a hidden message, secret resurrection or preserved consciousness. Lucy’s Moon scene functions as the conclusion to David’s story and the emotional consequence of the promise they made.
Why the ending is tragic closure rather than a twist
Night City repeatedly presents survival as a transaction: more chrome brings more capability, but also more risk and dependence on the systems that sell power. David rejects that logic only at the end. He cannot buy a future with another upgrade, so he uses what remains of him to give Lucy an exit.
Lucy’s arrival on the Moon completes the journey in physical terms while denying the fantasy that motivated it. The city’s most personal promise is fulfilled in the loneliest possible way. That contrast is why the ending lands as closure: David’s arc ends with a deliberate sacrifice, Rebecca’s death confirms the cost of the assault, and Lucy carries the memory forward without a canonized return for David.
