The Outer Worlds
Obsidian Entertainment calls The Outer Worlds a single-player, first-person science-fiction RPG. Your character is a colonist who wakes after decades in transit and becomes involved in a conspiracy threatening the Halcyon colony. The original release date listed by Obsidian is October 25, 2019.
Halcyon is organized as a collection of settlements, stations, and other colony locations. You travel between these places, meet competing factions, recruit companions, and decide what sort of colonist to become. First-person shooting is present, but conversations, faction decisions, companion missions, character builds, and the optional flaw system are equally important to the role-playing experience.

Is The Outer Worlds open world like Cyberpunk 2077?
No. Both games let you explore science-fiction environments and make choices, but their geography works differently.
Night City is the continuous playground
Cyberpunk 2077 treats Night City as the primary open-world space. Streets, districts, vehicles, gigs, side activities, and story missions occupy the same urban environment. You can move from one objective to another through the city, encounter activities while travelling, and return to familiar neighborhoods as your relationships and quests develop.
Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown, a walled-off district within the broader Night City setting. The expansion also adds repeatable open-world activities, so its content extends the same street-level exploration model rather than replacing the main world with an unrelated menu of missions.
Halcyon is a connected set of locations
The Outer Worlds asks you to explore the furthest reaches of the Halcyon colony, but those reaches are presented as separate locations connected by travel. A settlement, space station, or other destination can contain substantial quests and choices, yet the game is not best described as one seamless city map.

This structure makes the two games feel different even when both offer exploration. In Night City, the act of travelling through the environment is part of the fantasy. In Halcyon, the important decision is often which location, faction, or companion thread to pursue next. Neither approach is inherently superior; choose the one that matches how you like an RPG to pace its world.
Combat and moment-to-moment play
Cyberpunk 2077 favors action variety
Combat in Cyberpunk 2077 is real time. You can use firearms or melee weapons, approach encounters stealthily, or combine hacking with other tools. Cyberware and skill choices let you build V around different approaches instead of locking the character into a single class.
Vehicles are part of the everyday loop. Driving gives the city a practical scale and lets you move between missions without treating the environment as a series of disconnected stages. The result is an action-RPG rhythm: travel, notice an activity, decide whether to stop, fight or infiltrate, then continue toward the next objective.
The Outer Worlds balances shooting with conversation
The Outer Worlds also uses a first-person perspective and shooting, but its most consequential interactions often happen in dialogue and faction negotiations. A combat encounter can be only one way to resolve a problem, depending on your build and the choices you make in conversation.
Companions accompany you through the colony and have their own stories. Their goals can affect how a mission feels and what you consider a successful outcome. The optional flaw system adds another role-playing decision: accepting a permanent drawback in exchange for a character-development benefit. Because flaws are optional, you can decide whether that extra risk suits the kind of run you want.

- Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want frequent real-time combat, vehicle travel, stealth, hacking, and the freedom to redesign a cybernetic build around different weapons or skills.
- Choose The Outer Worlds if you want shooting to sit alongside dialogue checks, faction consequences, companion missions, and decisions about whether a flaw is worth taking.

CD PROJEKT RED presents V’s decisions as choices that shape the story and the people around the player. Relationships are woven through the main narrative and side quests, so the consequences are often personal: whom V trusts, which jobs are accepted, and how key situations are handled.

The game lets you express a role through play as well as dialogue. A stealth hacker, a heavily armed fighter, and a melee-focused character can approach the same broad world with different tools. That build freedom is part of the choice system, even when a decision does not immediately produce a different cutscene.
The Outer Worlds: choices as the organizing principle
Obsidian emphasizes that your choices affect story development, your character build, companion stories, and end-game scenarios. Factions are not just background decoration: supporting one group can change how another group treats you, what opportunities appear, and which conclusion fits your actions.
Companion missions provide a second layer of consequence. Bringing a companion to a location can expose personal goals or reactions that you would not see while travelling alone. If your priority is a role-playing game where conversation and alignment repeatedly reshape the journey, The Outer Worlds puts those decisions closer to the center of every chapter.

Cyberpunk 2077 is dark and tragic
Night City is built around identity, technology, power, and survival. The story’s implant premise gives those themes a personal urgency, while the city presents a society where wealth, violence, and corporate influence are constantly visible. Its adult tone and cinematic presentation suit players who want a dramatic science-fiction story with high emotional stakes.
The Outer Worlds is satirical and colorful
Halcyon uses a brighter, more exaggerated style to satirize corporate control and colonial life. The conspiracy that begins with your character’s awakening expands into questions about who owns the colony, whose interests its institutions serve, and what kind of society your decisions will support.
The tonal difference matters when deciding between them. Cyberpunk 2077 asks you to inhabit a dangerous city and its tragedies. The Outer Worlds invites you to question the absurdity of its corporate systems, often through sharp dialogue and faction conflicts.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
Phantom Liberty launched on September 26, 2023. It is a spy-thriller expansion set in Dogtown, a walled-off district inside Night City’s broader setting. The expansion adds a new skill tree, gigs, side quests, weapons, items, and repeatable activities.

The expansion is not merely a separate story screen. Dogtown gives you another district to explore and another set of missions that use the game’s driving, combat, stealth, and build systems. If you want the fullest current version of Cyberpunk 2077, verify that the edition you buy includes it.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition

The Outer Worlds expansions
Murder on Eridanos is described by Obsidian as the second narrative expansion. It takes place across floating islands and centers on a murder mystery. It adds companion play, a clue-finding gadget, and three new science weapons. Obsidian announced its release for March 17, 2021.
Peril on Gorgon was announced as the first of the two narrative expansions, including in Obsidian’s coverage of the Switch version. Because editions and bundles can differ, inspect the current product description to see whether a listing contains the base game only or includes additional content.

The Ultimate Edition announcement specifically covers PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. CD PROJEKT RED also states that the GOG and Steam releases of Cyberpunk 2077 support streaming through NVIDIA GeForce NOW.

The Outer Worlds availability
Obsidian lists Windows, Steam, Epic Games, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch availability for The Outer Worlds. The physical Switch release uses a cartridge and may require a day-one patch of up to 6 GB, according to Obsidian’s Switch announcement.
