For most people discovering Night City after watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, buy Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on a supported current platform. It combines the complete base game with Phantom Liberty, the only full expansion made for the game. The free Edgerunners Update is already included in the modern base-game experience, so you do not need Phantom Liberty merely to get anime-inspired content. Choose the base game alone only when it is substantially cheaper, you want to try the main campaign first, or you already own the expansion; buy Phantom Liberty separately when you already own the base game on the same platform or storefront.
The short answer: which Cyberpunk 2077 edition should you buy?
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is the simplest complete purchase for a first-time player. It contains the base game, the paid Phantom Liberty expansion, Update 2.0, and all free downloadable content released for the game. You get the original Night City campaign and the Dogtown expansion without having to match separate licenses later.

The base game remains a sensible lower-cost entry point. It includes the main campaign, the free Edgerunners Update, and free post-launch updates available on your platform. Update 2.3 is free to every base-game owner and does not require Phantom Liberty or Ultimate Edition. What the base game does not include is the paid expansion’s story, district, missions and related systems.
Phantom Liberty is an expansion, not a standalone game. It requires the base game and is normally the right purchase only for somebody who already owns Cyberpunk 2077 on the same storefront or console platform. A new buyer should compare the live combined price with Ultimate Edition before purchasing the two products separately.

What Ultimate Edition actually contains
CD PROJEKT RED describes Ultimate Edition as a package containing the base game and its spy-thriller expansion. The bundle also includes Update 2.0 and all free downloadable content released for the game. “Includes” does not mean the updates are exclusive to the bundle: free updates are distributed to owners of the base game as well.
- Base game: V’s complete Night City campaign, side jobs and the systems available in the current version for your platform.
- Phantom Liberty: the paid expansion, set largely in the new Dogtown district and built around a separate spy-thriller storyline that intersects with the main game.
- Update 2.0: the major free systems update included in the modern game package.
- Free downloadable content: free additions released for the game, including the Edgerunners-inspired content described below.
There is only one full expansion planned for Cyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED’s technical-support statement identifies Phantom Liberty as the only planned expansion developed for the game, so there is no second paid story expansion you need to budget for when choosing an edition.
What Edgerunners fans get for free
The anime connection is not locked behind Ultimate Edition. The free Edgerunners Update added a full wardrobe-transmog system, new weapons and equipment, new gigs, and items inspired by the anime. Those additions are part of the updated base game and do not require Phantom Liberty.
The Edgerunners Update
Buy the base game and you can use the anime-inspired content that arrived in the free update, subject to the platform’s supported version. This is the correct answer if your only reason for buying is to use recognizable Edgerunners-style gear or see the crossover gigs.
Phantom Liberty
The expansion is thematically compatible with the anime’s audience, but it is not a continuation of David Martinez’s story and should not be described as “the Edgerunners DLC.” It delivers a new paid spy-thriller narrative and the Dogtown district within the wider Cyberpunk 2077 setting.
Ultimate Edition
Ultimate Edition packages both experiences: the free Edgerunners material that belongs to the base game and the separate paid expansion. You are paying for Phantom Liberty and the convenience of one complete license, not for access to routine patches that base-game owners also receive.

Do not assume that a cheap base-game copy becomes Ultimate Edition automatically. If you later decide to enter Dogtown, you must buy Phantom Liberty separately unless your platform offers a bundle or upgrade at that time.

PlayStation 5
PS5 is the recommended PlayStation version for a new buyer. The PlayStation store description states that Ultimate Edition contains content unavailable on PS4. CD PROJEKT RED requires a PS5 for patches released after November 8, 2022 and for Phantom Liberty.
If you still have a PS4 copy, the base game can run on PS4, but that does not turn the console into a current-generation version. To get the complete post-launch experience, move to PS5 and make sure the edition or expansion entitlement is for the same PlayStation account.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X and Series S are the supported Xbox platforms for Phantom Liberty and later new-content updates. Choose the Xbox Series edition of Ultimate Edition when buying fresh. An Xbox One boxed copy is not equivalent to the current Ultimate Edition for expansion purposes.
PC
On PC, the key decision is ownership continuity rather than a different game build. If you already own the base game on Steam, GOG or Epic Games Store, check the price of Phantom Liberty on that same storefront. A bundle purchased on another storefront may not combine with your existing license.
For a new PC player, compare the current price of Ultimate Edition with the base game plus expansion in the same store. Regional pricing and sales change, so a permanent price recommendation would be unreliable.

Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 received Ultimate Edition on June 5, 2025. The release is available as a physical 64 GB game card and as a digital Nintendo eShop version. It supports motion controls, gyro aiming, touch controls and mouse controls.
This is not a release for the original Nintendo Switch. Check that the listing explicitly says “Nintendo Switch 2” before ordering, particularly when shopping for a physical copy. Packaging, region and the way expansion data is delivered can vary; verify the box or store description rather than assuming every physical package contains identical on-card content.
Apple silicon Mac
The Mac release launched on July 17, 2025 as Ultimate Edition. It requires an Apple silicon Mac with at least 16 GB of unified memory running macOS 15.5 or later. It is sold through the Mac App Store, GOG.com, Steam and Epic Games Store.

Existing owners on GOG, Steam or Epic can download the compatible Mac version without buying a second copy, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s announcement. This convenience applies to those supported storefront entitlements; it does not merge licenses purchased from unrelated stores.
Battle.net
On September 13, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED announced that Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty and Ultimate Edition would come to Battle.net later in 2026, with separate and bundled purchasing options. Because that announcement describes a future release rather than a confirmed launch on October 19, 2026, check the live Battle.net listing before making a storefront-specific recommendation or purchase.
Why PS4 and Xbox One are poor choices for this purchase
After Patch 1.6, CD PROJEKT RED moved further new-content updates and improvements exclusively to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The company also says Phantom Liberty was not developed for previous-generation consoles because of its technical scope.

- The base game may still run on those consoles, but it will not receive the same stream of new-content updates as supported platforms.
If your hardware is limited to PS4 or Xbox One, the financially safer decision is to upgrade before buying for the expansion. Buying the old-generation base game first and then purchasing a new console can create extra cost and entitlement complications.
How to choose when you already own Cyberpunk 2077
You own the base game digitally
- Open the store tied to the account that owns the base game.
- Search for Phantom Liberty and confirm that the listing identifies your exact platform generation.
- Compare the expansion price with any same-store Ultimate Edition or complete-edition upgrade offer.
- Buy the expansion only after checking that the base game and add-on use the same account and region.
- Install the base-game update and the expansion, then launch from that account; an expansion entitlement cannot replace a missing base-game license.
You own a physical console copy
Check the disc’s platform generation and the account that will receive the add-on. A PS4 or Xbox One disc does not make Phantom Liberty playable on that console. If you move from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series, confirm the platform’s upgrade and backward-compatibility rules before buying a digital expansion.
You own the game on PC
Stay on the storefront where your base-game license lives. Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store purchases are separate ecosystems, so buying the expansion elsewhere can leave it unrecognized by your installed game. For Mac, eligible owners on those three stores can download the compatible version without a second purchase.
How to choose as a first-time buyer
- Identify your hardware first. Select PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 or a qualifying Apple silicon Mac. Eliminate PS4 and Xbox One if Phantom Liberty is part of your plan.
- Decide whether you want Dogtown now. If you want the complete story package or expect to play the expansion eventually, start with Ultimate Edition.
- Compare like-for-like prices. Compare Ultimate Edition against the base game plus Phantom Liberty on the same platform and storefront. Use the price shown at checkout because sales and regional pricing change.
- Check physical details. For console boxes and the Switch 2 game card, verify platform, region and whether any expansion entitlement is supplied on the card or by a download code.
- Keep the receipt and account consistent. Expansion access is tied to the purchasing account and compatible platform, not simply to having any Cyberpunk 2077 disc nearby.
When buying the base game alone is the smarter move
Choose the base game by itself when the discount is substantially deeper than the complete bundle, you want to sample the main campaign before paying for an expansion, or you already have Phantom Liberty through a compatible entitlement. You still receive the free Edgerunners Update and Update 2.3, so this is not an unfinished or trial-only version.
The trade-off is future spending and an extra license decision. If you later want Dogtown, you will need to buy the expansion and should verify that the store still offers a compatible add-on or bundle.

It does not replace the main campaign, does not contain the entire Edgerunners anime story, and is not required for free updates such as Update 2.3. Describing it as optional is accurate only in the purchasing sense: you can complete the base game without it, but it is the main paid addition for players seeking the fullest current Cyberpunk 2077 package.

Update 2.3 is free to all base-game owners and does not require Phantom Liberty or Ultimate Edition. This is why an Ultimate Edition listing that mentions updates should be read as a convenience bundle description, not as a claim that base-game owners are excluded from free patches.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: assuming Edgerunners fans must buy the expansion
Fix: The free Edgerunners Update supplies the anime-inspired wardrobe, gear and gigs. Buy Phantom Liberty for its Dogtown story and expansion content, not merely for crossover items.
Mistake: treating Phantom Liberty as a standalone game

Fix: Battle.net was announced for later in 2026. Confirm that the store page is live and that your region is supported before buying on that platform.
Final buying decision
For a new Edgerunners fan, choose Ultimate Edition on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 or a qualifying Apple silicon Mac. It is the least complicated route to the base campaign plus Phantom Liberty, while the free Edgerunners Update is already part of the base-game experience. Choose the base game alone for a lower-commitment start or a much better sale price, and add Phantom Liberty later through the same compatible storefront. Do not buy a PS4 or Xbox One version expecting the complete expansion-era game.
