If you cannot purchase Shanghai STAR-listed CXMT shares directly, the practical alternatives are exchange-traded funds and publicly listed memory companies. The choices differ substantially: one fund reported a 10.56% CXMT position, another held CXMT directly through a QFII quota, while other funds spread exposure across China’s memory supply chain, Asian semiconductor firms or the global DRAM, NAND and HBM industries.

The right route depends on four decisions: whether you need actual CXMT shares, how much China concentration you can accept, whether you want DRAM/NAND/HBM breadth, and which exchanges and investor-eligibility rules apply to you. Holdings, weights, fees, spreads and eligibility change, so confirm the latest prospectus and portfolio file before trading.

What “CXMT exposure” can mean

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is a Chinese memory-chip producer whose shares trade on Shanghai’s STAR Market. For many overseas investors, direct purchase of the STAR-listed stock is unavailable because of market-access, account, settlement or eligibility restrictions. An alternative therefore may provide one of four different types of exposure:

  • Direct ownership: a fund actually holds CXMT shares.
  • CXMT-weighted fund exposure: an exchange-traded fund owns CXMT or obtains economic exposure, but you own units of the fund rather than the stock.
  • China memory value-chain exposure: a basket of Chinese companies involved in memory design, manufacturing, packaging, equipment, materials or intellectual property.
  • Asian or global memory exposure: a diversified basket of companies making or supplying DRAM, NAND, HBM and related equipment.

These are not interchangeable. A China-only fund can move with domestic policy and local-market sentiment even when global memory prices are weak. A global fund can benefit from a worldwide memory upcycle but may give CXMT only a small weight. A direct-holding fund can track CXMT more closely while still adding fund-level fees, trading spreads and structural risks.

Quick comparison of the main routes

Route Exposure type Geographic scope Published details Best suited to
Tema DISK Reported CXMT position inside an ETF Global semiconductor portfolio with a specific CXMT allocation Tema reported a 10.56% CXMT position bought on the morning of CXMT’s July 27, 2026 IPO; it described this as the highest CXMT exposure among U.S.-listed ETFs at that time Investors seeking an unusually large, clearly reported CXMT weight through a U.S.-listed ETF
Roundhill DRAM Global memory-industry basket; issuer says it uses total-return swaps for diversification compliance Global Launched April 2, 2026; 0.65% gross expense ratio; issuer listed Micron, Samsung, SK hynix, CXMT and Seagate among top exposures on September 30, 2026 Investors wanting DRAM, NAND and HBM exposure rather than a China-only position
KraneShares KSTR Direct CXMT share ownership through a QFII quota China-focused KraneShares reported an initial 2.12% CXMT weight after the STAR Market listing; UCITS eligibility and local distribution rules apply Eligible UCITS investors who specifically require a fund reporting physical CXMT ownership
Defiance CRAM China memory value-chain ETF China Index covers eleven activities, including DRAM, NAND, modules, controllers, packaging, testing, equipment, materials and IP Investors seeking broad Chinese memory-industry exposure instead of one issuer
Amplify AHBM Concentrated Asian memory and enabling-technology ETF Asia-focused Holds ten companies spanning memory chips, equipment, materials, packaging and testing; stated expense ratio 0.59% Investors wanting Asian diversification with a concentrated portfolio
Individual listed memory companies Single-company equity exposure Depends on the company and listing Examples appearing in the global memory universe include Micron, Samsung, SK hynix and Seagate Investors comfortable researching company-specific earnings, valuation and geopolitical risk

“Not stated” values such as current assets, bid-ask spreads, turnover and today’s holdings should be obtained from each issuer’s latest documents; they can change materially after launch or rebalancing.

Tema DISK: the largest reported CXMT position among U.S.-listed ETFs

Tema said DISK bought CXMT on the morning of the company’s July 27, 2026 IPO and reported a 10.56% position. The issuer described that allocation as the highest CXMT exposure among U.S.-listed ETFs at that time. This makes DISK the most direct U.S.-listed fund route in the published comparison for an investor whose priority is a substantial CXMT weight.

What the 10.56% figure does—and does not—tell you

  • It is a reported portfolio weight at a particular point in time, not a permanent allocation.
  • The percentage can change when CXMT’s price moves differently from the rest of the fund, when the fund rebalances, or when the manager changes positions.
  • Buying DISK units does not give you voting rights or a separate CXMT brokerage position.
  • The remaining portfolio still determines much of the fund’s volatility and return.

Tema’s CIO Yuri Khodjamirian said AI demand was driving a global memory undersupply and that CXMT was positioned to serve China’s growing AI ecosystem. That is an investment thesis, not a guarantee: memory supply can expand quickly, and policy or technology shifts can undermine any single producer’s advantage.

When DISK is a reasonable fit

DISK is most relevant when you want a U.S.-listed vehicle and prefer a meaningful CXMT allocation over a broad but tiny one. Check the latest holdings file, fund objective, spread and assets before trading because the 10.56% figure is historical to the issuer’s announcement.

Roundhill DRAM: global exposure to DRAM, NAND and HBM

Roundhill DRAM is designed around the global memory industry rather than China alone. Its mandate covers companies that produce or supply high-bandwidth memory (HBM), NAND and DRAM. The issuer listed Micron, Samsung, SK hynix, CXMT and Seagate among its top exposures as of September 30, 2026.

Fund facts

  • Launch date: April 2, 2026.
  • Gross expense ratio: 0.65%.
  • Scope: memory manufacturers and suppliers across HBM, NAND and DRAM.
  • Structure note: Roundhill states that it uses total-return swaps for diversification compliance.

A total-return swap can provide economic exposure to an asset without the fund holding every underlying share directly. It also introduces counterparty, collateral and documentation risks that differ from a straightforward physical portfolio. Read the fund’s prospectus for the exact swap arrangements, limits and collateral terms.

Why choose a global memory fund

Global diversification can reduce dependence on one country’s regulation, exchange controls or industrial policy. It also gives exposure to HBM demand from AI servers, NAND used in enterprise and consumer solid-state storage, and conventional DRAM used in computers and other devices. The trade-off is that CXMT may represent only part of the portfolio, and large non-Chinese holdings can dominate performance.

KSTR: direct CXMT ownership for eligible UCITS investors

KraneShares said its KSTR fund held CXMT shares directly through a qualified foreign institutional investor (QFII) quota. The issuer reported an initial CXMT weight of 2.12% after the STAR Market listing.

Why the structure matters

Physical ownership means the fund’s portfolio contains the shares rather than relying solely on a derivative contract. That is the clearest route for an eligible investor who specifically wants a fund to own CXMT stock. It does not remove market risk, currency risk, custody risk or fund-level expenses.

Eligibility and practical checks

  1. Confirm that your country, broker and account type can purchase the relevant UCITS share class.
  2. Check whether the share class is listed on an exchange accessible to you and trades in your preferred currency.
  3. Read the latest holdings report to see whether the 2.12% initial weight has changed.
  4. Review the fund’s China-market, QFII, custody and settlement disclosures.

KSTR is therefore a specialist solution, not a universal substitute for direct CXMT ownership. If you are not an eligible UCITS investor, another fund or a listed company may be operationally simpler.

CRAM: China’s entire memory value chain

Defiance’s CRAM targets Chinese memory companies across eleven activities. The stated scope includes DRAM, NAND, memory modules, controllers, packaging, testing, equipment, materials and intellectual property.

What value-chain breadth adds

A memory-chip cycle does not reward only wafer manufacturers. Equipment vendors, materials suppliers, packaging houses, testers and controller designers can earn revenue at different points in the cycle. A value-chain fund can therefore capture domestic industry development even when one chip producer underperforms.

The concentration trade-off

CRAM remains China-focused. Its holdings can be affected by domestic policy, export controls, tariffs, access to foreign equipment, local demand and renminbi movements. It may also contain companies with limited trading history or different disclosure standards from large global semiconductor firms. Use the latest index methodology and holdings file to understand position limits and turnover.

AHBM: concentrated Asian diversification

Amplify’s AHBM holds ten companies spanning memory chips and supporting equipment, materials, packaging and testing. The issuer states an expense ratio of 0.59%.

AHBM sits between a China-only strategy and a broad global fund. Asian exposure can include companies benefiting from regional manufacturing capacity and supply-chain specialization while reducing dependence on one country. However, ten holdings is concentrated: a single earnings miss, production problem or regulatory event can have a noticeable effect on the fund.

Before buying, compare the current country weights, company weights, trading volume and spread with your tolerance for concentration. The stated 0.59% expense ratio is a fund charge, not the total cost of ownership; brokerage commissions, bid-ask spread and taxes may also apply.

Buying individual listed memory companies instead of an ETF

If no fund offers the combination of CXMT weight, geography and liquidity you need, listed memory companies provide another route. The global memory universe cited by Roundhill includes Micron, Samsung, SK hynix, CXMT and Seagate.

Advantages

  • You can select a company’s specific exposure to DRAM, NAND, HBM, storage or equipment.
  • There is no ETF portfolio turnover or fund-level tracking difference.
  • You can size the position precisely and combine it with other holdings.

Risks

  • A single company can suffer from a manufacturing yield problem, product delay, debt burden or customer concentration.
  • Listings may trade in different currencies and time zones, with different settlement and investor-protection rules.
  • Direct shares can create more pronounced exposure to export controls, tariffs, sanctions and local-market regulation.
  • Valuation risk is higher when investors price in a full memory upcycle before earnings arrive.

Individual shares are appropriate only if you are prepared to read company filings and monitor quarterly capacity, pricing and capital-expenditure trends.

How the memory cycle affects every alternative

Memory is cyclical because manufacturers can add capacity faster than end-market demand grows. When inventories are low and AI-server demand is strong, prices and margins can rise sharply. When several suppliers expand simultaneously, prices can fall and profits can contract.

An HKEX filing citing CFM Flash reported 2025 global memory-chip revenue of US$221.6 billion, up 32.7% year over year. It linked demand to AI-server HBM, DDR4 and DDR5, and enterprise SSDs. That growth statistic describes the 2025 market, not a forecast for 2026 or later.

Technology segments to distinguish

  • DRAM: volatile memory used in servers, PCs and many electronic devices; DDR4 and DDR5 are common generations.
  • HBM: high-bandwidth memory stacked and integrated for demanding workloads such as AI accelerators.
  • NAND: non-volatile flash memory used in SSDs, phones and other storage products.

A fund that benefits from HBM demand may not behave like a NAND-heavy fund. Review the actual segment exposure rather than relying on the word “memory” in a product name.

Risk checklist before choosing a fund

Competition and oversupply

Micron’s SEC filing warns that government assistance to competitors and new entrants can create the threat of increasing competition and DRAM and NAND oversupply, specifically naming CXMT and YMTC. New capacity can be positive for long-term supply but negative for near-term prices and margins.

Government intervention and trade restrictions

Memory companies face export controls, tariffs, subsidies, sanctions and changing qualification rules. These policies can affect access to advanced equipment, customers and financing. China-focused products add domestic regulatory and market-access risk.

Technology and execution

Roundhill identifies business-cycle, technology, regulatory, supply-chain, manufacturing-yield, pricing and market-acceptance risks. A company can lose share even when total memory demand is rising if its process technology, yield or product qualification lags competitors.

Fund and trading risk

ETF investors also face tracking difference, rebalancing turnover, bid-ask spread, market-hours mismatch and possible creation or redemption disruption. A fund’s net asset value can differ from its exchange price during stressed markets.

Capital loss

Amplify states that investment return and principal value fluctuate and may be worth less when sold. No fund in this comparison guarantees recovery of your original investment.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the target: choose direct CXMT, a large CXMT weight, China’s value chain, Asia or the global memory sector.
  2. Set a concentration limit: decide the maximum percentage of your portfolio you can place in one country, one company or one cyclical industry.
  3. Check eligibility: verify exchange access, UCITS status where relevant, account permissions, currency and settlement.
  4. Read the current holdings: record CXMT’s weight, country allocation, top ten positions and exposure to DRAM, NAND and HBM.
  5. Confirm structure: determine whether the fund holds physical shares, uses swaps or combines both.
  6. Compare costs: include expense ratio, spread, commissions, taxes, currency conversion and any securities-lending or swap-related disclosures.
  7. Assess liquidity: use limit orders when spreads are wide and avoid assuming a recently launched ETF has deep trading volume.
  8. Plan rebalancing: decide in advance how you will respond to a large price rise, a memory downcycle or a change in the fund’s mandate.

Which route fits which investor?

Investor priority Most relevant route Main compromise
Largest reported CXMT weight through a U.S.-listed ETF Tema DISK 10.56% was a reported July 2026 position and can change; the rest of the portfolio still matters
Physical CXMT shares inside a fund and eligible UCITS access KraneShares KSTR Initial CXMT weight was 2.12%; eligibility and distribution rules limit availability
Global DRAM, NAND and HBM diversification Roundhill DRAM CXMT is only one exposure; swap structure adds additional complexity
Broad China memory-industry participation Defiance CRAM China and policy concentration remain high
Asian basket with ten memory and enabling companies Amplify AHBM Concentrated portfolio and regional risk
Maximum control over one company or segment Individual listed memory companies Single-company volatility and greater research burden

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating an old weight as a promise: the 10.56% DISK and 2.12% KSTR figures are time-specific reports.
  • Assuming “memory” means HBM: inspect whether the product actually owns HBM producers, NAND companies, DRAM suppliers or enabling firms.
  • Ignoring fund structure: physical holdings and total-return swaps have different counterparty and tracking considerations.
  • Comparing expense ratios alone: spreads, turnover, taxes, currency and liquidity can outweigh a small fee difference.
  • Overlooking the cycle: strong recent revenue growth can attract capacity additions that later create oversupply.
  • Using market orders in thin trading: a wide spread can immediately reduce the value of a small investment.
  • Confusing access with ownership: an ETF unit gives you a claim on the fund, not direct voting or custody of CXMT shares.

Bottom line: choose the exposure, not just the ticker

For a large reported CXMT allocation in a U.S.-listed ETF, DISK is the clearest published alternative, with Tema’s 10.56% position reported after the July 27, 2026 IPO. For eligible UCITS investors who want a fund reporting physical CXMT ownership, KSTR is the more specific structure, although its initial weight was 2.12%. DRAM is the broadest global option for combined DRAM, NAND and HBM exposure; CRAM is the China-only value-chain choice; AHBM offers a concentrated Asian basket. Individual listed companies provide the most control but also the most company-specific risk.
