CuteFTP is a Windows client for connecting to a remote file server, browsing local and remote folders, and moving files between them. It does not provide storage or operate as an FTP server. You supply connection details from your hosting provider or server administrator, choose the protocol that server accepts, save the site, transfer files, and verify the result in the queue or connection log.
The safest choice is an encrypted protocol—FTPS or SFTP—when the server supports it. Plain FTP does not encrypt credentials or file traffic. CuteFTP 9.4.0, released April 6, 2026, adds TLS 1.3 and updated SSH/TLS components, but compatibility still depends on the remote server.

What CuteFTP does—and what it does not do
Globalscape describes CuteFTP as an entry-level FTP client for basic transfers. In practical terms, the application is the control panel on your Windows computer: it opens a session to a remote server, displays folders on both sides, and sends commands to upload, download, rename, or otherwise maintain files for which your account has permission.
The remote system remains responsible for storage, accounts, permissions, quotas, and protocol support. CuteFTP cannot connect to a server that does not offer the selected protocol or that requires an authentication method the client and account do not have. It also does not replace a managed file-transfer platform when an organization needs central policy enforcement, audit workflows, or large-scale partner onboarding.

The basic workflow is:
- Obtain the server address, protocol, port, username, password or key requirements, and starting folder from the administrator or hosting provider.
- Create a site entry with the connection wizard or site manager.
- Connect and confirm that the local and remote folder panes show the expected locations.
- Select files or folders, choose upload or download, and watch the transfer queue.
- Confirm completion and investigate any failed item in the queue or connection log.
Globalscape summarizes the purpose as giving users control over files transferred across multiple locations. That description is accurate for individual and small-team file movement; it should not be read as a promise of storage, hosting, or enterprise workflow management.
Gather the connection details before opening CuteFTP
A connection fails most often because one required value is missing or mismatched. Ask for all of the following in writing:
- Server address: the hostname or IP address supplied for the service.
- Protocol: FTP, FTPS, HTTPS, or SFTP. These are not interchangeable settings.
- Port: use the value supplied by the administrator rather than assuming a default.
- Authentication: username and password, SSH private key, certificate, or another method required by the server.
- Remote starting directory: some accounts open at the correct folder automatically; others require a path.
- Certificate or host-key policy: determine how your organization wants unknown or changed keys and certificates handled.
- Permission scope: confirm which folders you may read, write, rename, or delete.
Keep these details separate from the site nickname you create in CuteFTP. A friendly name such as “production website” helps you identify the entry, but it does not change the server, account, or security policy behind it.

CuteFTP lists FTP, FTPS using SSL/TLS, HTTPS using SSL/TLS, SFTP using SSH2, and OpenPGP encryption among its security capabilities. The server must support the option you select; a client-side menu cannot make an unsupported service available.
| Option | What it represents | What to confirm with the server owner |
|---|---|---|
| FTP | Traditional file-transfer protocol without encryption by itself. | Whether unencrypted credentials and traffic are acceptable; many services prohibit this. |
| FTPS (SSL/TLS) | FTP protected with SSL/TLS. | Whether the service uses explicit or implicit TLS, the required port, and certificate-validation rules. |
| HTTPS (SSL) | HTTP-based transfer protected with SSL/TLS. | Whether the endpoint is an HTTPS file service and which authentication method it expects. |
| SFTP (SSH2) | File transfer over the SSH2 protocol. | SSH username, port, password or private-key method, and host-key requirements. |
| OpenPGP | Encryption applied to files or transfer workflows; it is not a replacement for choosing the transport protocol. | Whether the recipient has supplied the correct public key and defined when encryption and decryption occur. |
Do not describe ordinary FTP as secure merely because the account has a password. Unless another encryption layer is applied, the password and file contents can be exposed in transit. If the administrator offers both FTP and an encrypted alternative, use the encrypted alternative and record the exact setting in the site entry.

- Open the connection wizard. Start a new site entry rather than editing a known-good site until you have the new values ready.
- Name the site. Use a descriptive label that identifies the environment and purpose, such as a staging site or a client-delivery endpoint.
- Enter the host and port. Copy the server name exactly. A typo can look like a password or firewall problem later.
- Select the protocol. Match the administrator’s instructions. Choose FTPS or SFTP when that is the approved service, and do not switch between them experimentally unless the owner confirms both are enabled.
- Set authentication. Enter the supplied username and password, or select the required SSH key and certificate settings. Protect private keys and avoid placing credentials in shared documents.
- Set the initial folder if required. Leave the default when the service intentionally assigns the account’s home directory; otherwise enter the exact remote path provided.
- Save the site entry. Saving prevents retyping and allows the transfer engine or scripts to reuse the approved configuration.
- Connect and review prompts carefully. A certificate or SSH host-key prompt should be accepted only after the administrator confirms that the identity is expected.
- Check the connection log if the session does not open. Globalscape’s troubleshooting guidance points to this log because it records communications and commands and often exposes the precise server response.
Once connected, pause before transferring anything. Verify the remote account name, current folder, and available permissions. A successful login proves only that authentication worked; it does not prove that the account can write to the destination you intended.
Understand the CuteFTP workspace
CuteFTP presents local and remote file locations so that you can navigate both sides before starting a transfer. The local side represents folders on your Windows computer. The remote side represents the server session you opened. Selecting a folder on one side changes the working location for operations initiated from that side.
Navigate without losing the destination
Open the local folder that contains the source files, then navigate the remote pane to the exact destination. If the server account starts in a restricted home directory, do not assume that a similarly named folder elsewhere on the server is reachable. Use the path shown by the remote pane and the permissions granted to your account.
Use file names and encoding deliberately
The v9 documentation covers Unicode filenames. When a site uses accented characters, non-Latin scripts, or symbols, confirm that the server and operating system use compatible filename handling before moving a large set. A file that appears with altered characters can be difficult to find or overwrite later. SFTP session options and filename behavior should be checked against the current help for your release because the older v9 guide predates 9.4.0.
Maintain remote files cautiously
For files you are authorized to manage, use the available file-management commands to rename, move, or remove items after checking the selected path. Deletion and renaming affect the server immediately and may affect a live website or application. Keep a local backup or export when the files are difficult to recreate, and make one change at a time when diagnosing a problem.

- Open the local source folder and the remote destination folder.
- Select one or more files, or a folder if the server account permits directory transfers.
- Start the upload using the transfer command or the supported drag-and-drop action in your build.
- Watch the transfer queue for progress, completion, and failures.
- Refresh or revisit the remote folder and confirm that the expected names and sizes are present.
- Open the log for any item marked failed before retrying; the server response may identify a permission, path, authentication, or protocol issue.
For a production change, transfer to a staging or temporary name when the application’s deployment procedure allows it. Only replace the live file after checking the uploaded copy. CuteFTP moves bytes; it does not know whether a file is safe for your application, whether a configuration change is complete, or whether another person is editing the same document.
Download files from a remote site
Downloading copies data from the server to your computer. The process is the reverse, but destination mistakes are still common:
- Navigate to the remote folder containing the required files.
- Open the local folder where the copies should be stored and verify available disk space.
- Select the remote files or folder and start the download.
- Monitor the queue until each item reports completion.
- Open the local destination and check representative files, filenames, and modification dates.
- Keep the downloaded copy protected if it contains credentials, personal information, or proprietary data.
Do not treat a completed queue entry as a backup policy. A download is one copy made at one point in time. If you need recurring backups, use the transfer engine or a documented backup system and test restoration separately.
Confirm transfers and preserve useful evidence
The transfer queue is the first place to check whether an operation completed. Review each item rather than relying on a single overall status when moving a batch. A queue can contain successful and failed files at the same time.
The connection log is more valuable when a transfer or login fails. It records the communications and commands exchanged during the session, allowing you or an administrator to distinguish a wrong path from a rejected credential, a TLS or SSH negotiation problem, or a server-side permission refusal. Save the relevant log lines when requesting help, but remove passwords, private keys, and other secrets before sharing them.
Edit HTML documents without leaving the client
Globalscape describes an integrated, color-coded HTML editor for opening and editing local or remote HTML documents. Use it for small, controlled changes when you understand the consequences of editing a file in place. For larger projects, edit a local working copy, review the change, and upload the approved result so that you retain a rollback copy.

Automate recurring transfers
CuteFTP includes a Transfer Engine and COM-enabled scripting and programming interfaces. Globalscape says these components can schedule scripted transfers, back up or synchronize sites, and monitor local folders for changes. They are useful when the same approved operation must run repeatedly, but automation magnifies configuration mistakes.
Plan the automation
- Define the source, destination, protocol, account, and file-selection rule.
- Decide whether the job uploads, downloads, synchronizes, or creates a backup copy.
- Specify how successes, failures, duplicate names, and partial transfers are reported.
- Use an account with only the permissions required for the job.
- Choose a schedule that does not collide with maintenance windows or another process writing the same files.
Build and test a job
- Create or select the site entry with the approved security settings.
- Write the script or COM-based routine using the documented CuteFTP interfaces.
- Run it against a test folder and a small file set.
- Check the queue, log, destination filenames, and file contents.
- Introduce the production path only after the test succeeds.
- Record where logs are stored and who receives failure notifications.
Globalscape advertises support for up to 100 concurrent transfers. That is a vendor-stated capability, not an independently measured speed result. Actual throughput and reliability depend on the server, network, account limits, file sizes, encryption overhead, and the job design. More simultaneous transfers can also increase load or trigger server-side limits, so start conservatively and raise concurrency only with the administrator’s approval.

The client times out or cannot reach the host
Recheck the hostname, port, protocol, and network path against the administrator’s instructions. A service that expects SFTP will not respond correctly to an FTP or FTPS profile. If other users can connect, compare their non-secret settings. Use the CuteFTP connection log to identify whether the failure occurred before authentication or after the server responded.
The server rejects the username or password
Confirm the account name, spelling, capitalization, and whether the account is enabled for the selected protocol. Do not assume that a web-login password also grants FTP, FTPS, HTTPS, or SFTP access. If the server uses a key or certificate, verify that the correct private key and passphrase are selected and that the corresponding public credential is installed on the server.

Ask which TLS version, certificate policy, SSH host key, and cipher requirements the server enforces. CuteFTP 9.4.0 adds TLS 1.3 support, updates OpenSSL to 3.6.1 and its FIPS module to 3.1.2, and updates OpenSSH to 9.8.1. These are release-note claims, not a guarantee that every server will negotiate successfully. The release also lists SFTP fixes for connections to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or later and acceptance of SSH keys generated by Globalscape EFT Server; updating may therefore matter when an older build fails against those environments.

Login works but the expected folder is missing
Check the remote starting path and the account’s permissions. Many services expose a virtual home directory rather than the server’s physical root. Ask the administrator for the exact path and whether the account is allowed to list, read, write, rename, or delete in it.
A transfer fails after starting
Read the queue entry and connection log before retrying. Look for a rejected destination, insufficient permission, interrupted session, invalid filename, or server-side policy. Test one small file to the same destination. If the small test succeeds but a batch fails, isolate the filename or folder that triggers the problem instead of repeatedly resubmitting the entire batch.
Security practices for everyday use
- Prefer FTPS or SFTP when the server supports them and your administrator requires them.
- Verify certificates and SSH host keys through a trusted administrator before accepting a first-time or changed identity.
- Store credentials and private keys using the protections available on your Windows account; do not paste them into scripts or shared notes.
- Limit saved site entries and automation accounts to the permissions they actually need.
- Review logs for secrets before sending them to support.
- Keep CuteFTP updated within the version and support policy approved by your organization.
- Separate test, staging, and production site entries so that a mistaken click cannot silently target the wrong environment.
CuteFTP 9.4.0: release and support context
The current release identified in Globalscape’s April 6, 2026 notes is CuteFTP 9.4.0. The installer was upgraded to 64-bit. The same release notes list TLS 1.3 support, OpenSSL 3.6.1, FIPS module 3.1.2, OpenSSH 9.8.1, SFTP fixes for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or later, and support for SSH keys generated by Globalscape EFT Server.
The vendor support table marks CuteFTP v9.4’s end-of-life and support-end dates as not yet scheduled, so check the live lifecycle table before committing a long-lived deployment. Version 9.3 entered wind-down on April 6, 2026; its full-support wind-down ends April 6, 2027, and partial support ends October 6, 2027. Those dates can change, and they should not be treated as a substitute for the current vendor notice.
Purchase and trial options shown by the vendor
Globalscape’s CuteFTP page displayed the following Windows prices when checked October 7, 2026. They are vendor-displayed figures, not independently verified checkout totals, and may change.
| Offering | Displayed price | Included context |
|---|---|---|
| CuteFTP 9 for Windows | US$59.99 | Direct Windows license shown on the vendor page. |
| CuteFTP 9 with one year of maintenance and support | US$89.99 | License package including one year of maintenance and support. |
| Trial | Free trial option | Availability shown by the vendor; confirm current terms before downloading. |
The vendor states that upgrades require an existing CuteFTP registration serial number. Keep that serial number with your software records, especially if you expect to move from an earlier release.
When a managed-transfer product is a better fit
Globalscape positions CuteFTP for basic transfers and positions Globalscape EFT for complex, mission-critical, Windows-based, on-premises managed file transfer. It positions EFT Arcus as a cloud managed file-transfer service. These are vendor-defined use-case distinctions, not a requirement that every CuteFTP user upgrade.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consider a managed-transfer platform when several teams need centralized administration, policy enforcement, audit trails, partner-specific workflows, approvals, high-availability planning, or cloud delivery. Compare the options on:
- Individual workstation use versus organization-wide service management.
- Required protocols, authentication methods, certificates, and key rotation.
- Scheduling, monitoring, retry, notification, and audit requirements.
- Local or on-premises deployment versus a cloud service.
- Support lifecycle and upgrade responsibility.
- Total license, maintenance, infrastructure, and administration cost.
If your requirement is simply to connect to a supported server, browse folders, and move files securely, CuteFTP’s client workflow is the narrower and more direct tool.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-transfer checklist
- Confirm the server address, port, protocol, and authentication method.
- Verify that the site entry uses FTPS or SFTP when required.
- Check the local source or destination folder before selecting files.
- Confirm the remote path and write or read permission.
- Test with one small file when the destination or account is new.
- Watch every queue item until it reports completion or failure.
- Open the connection log for failures and remove secrets before sharing it.
- Keep a rollback copy before changing important remote files.
- For automation, test the script, schedule, notifications, and permissions separately.
