Switch to screenshots when the task depends on visual layout or the needed interface is missing from the accessibility tree, such as a canvas, map, chart, or image editor. There is no established universal savings percentage; token use depends on the page, image handling, model, tool framing, and retained history.

Playwright’s Vision Mode documentation says that “for most web applications, the default snapshot-based approach is more reliable and token-efficient.” Its snapshot comparison labels text-only snapshot cost “Low” and image-token screenshot cost “High.” Those are qualitative descriptions, not a promise of a fixed multiplier.

Why there is no universal token-savings number
A screenshot is not a fixed number of tokens across every browser-agent workflow. Image resolution and handling, the model, how the tool frames an observation, how often the agent captures it, and how much prior context remains in the conversation can all change usage. A text snapshot also varies: a short form and a long page do not contribute the same amount of text.
The available Playwright comparisons do not give a matched-task result such as “snapshots use 10 times fewer tokens.” Nor does a screenshot-based web-agent study establish a general head-to-head cost ratio. Its evaluation scope and methodology address particular research tasks, not a controlled comparison of equivalent snapshot and screenshot workflows. Treat any broad percentage without matched conditions as unsupported.

When to choose a snapshot
Use it for semantic web interfaces
Start with a snapshot for ordinary pages where buttons, links, fields, and other controls are exposed accessibly. The agent can inspect the structure and interact through references tied to observed elements, rather than inferring every target from pixels.
Keep the observation focused and current
- On a large page, search or extract the relevant part instead of repeatedly sending the entire snapshot.
- After navigation or a meaningful state change, take a fresh snapshot and use the current references. References describe the observed page state and may no longer be valid after it changes.
- Where available, use snapshot bounding boxes when the task needs spatial information but the semantic structure is still useful.
Playwright documents snapshot behavior for both Playwright MCP and the Playwright CLI; the exact interaction mechanics depend on the tool you use.

When to switch to screenshots
Use vision when meaning is carried mainly by visual content or spatial relationships that the accessibility tree does not expose. Common cases include canvas and WebGL applications, maps, image editors, charts, and custom widgets. It is also appropriate when the question is explicitly about appearance or visual arrangement, even if the page’s controls are otherwise accessible.
In these cases, repeatedly retrying semantic actions against controls that are absent from the tree is unlikely to help. Capture a screenshot and ground the task in what is visible. Playwright’s screenshot documentation covers screenshot capture; visual targeting still depends on the current viewport and layout, so a changed page can make earlier coordinates inaccurate.

How to combine the methods without wasting observations
- Inspect structure first. Take an accessibility snapshot and identify the relevant controls or content.
- Act on current references. Use references from the latest observation, refreshing the snapshot after navigation or state changes.
- Add a screenshot only for a visual need. Use it to resolve layout, appearance, or a control absent from the tree rather than capturing by default after every step.
- Continue from the updated state. After a visual action or page transition, observe the new page state before relying on earlier coordinates or element references.
This is a task-dependent hybrid approach, not a claim that one representation is always superior. Anthropic’s browser-use documentation describes combining page structure, including accessibility information, with screenshots and viewport coordinates. It also notes limitations associated with computer use, including latency, vision accuracy, and prompt injection.
How to measure token cost for your own agent
If a percentage matters for a product decision, measure it on your own workflow rather than extrapolating from a qualitative tool description. Compare equivalent tasks and account for the observation itself separately from other context.

- Choose representative pages and tasks, and run each under both observation methods from equivalent page states.
- Hold the model, prompts, action sequence, screenshot resolution and handling, observation frequency, and retained history constant where possible.
- Log usage attributable to page observations, separating snapshot text tokens, image tokens, tool or schema overhead, and retained history.
- Report the conditions alongside the result. A figure applies to those tasks and settings, not automatically to other sites or models.
This measurement design is a practical recommendation; the cited documentation does not report a universal benchmark or prescribe this experiment.
What screenshot-based agent studies can—and cannot—tell you
Research on screenshot-based agents can demonstrate a visual-agent methodology, but it should not be treated as a token-cost comparison unless it directly measures matched snapshot and screenshot runs. For example, the 2024 ACL paper describes a screenshot-based web-agent approach and a study scope that excludes some sites requiring login or CAPTCHA. Those access conditions affect which tasks are represented; they do not show that screenshots are more or less token-efficient than accessibility snapshots.
