For most GeForce RTX owners, software tuning is the safer first choice. MSI Afterburner lets you adjust clocks, memory, voltage, power and temperature limits, save profiles, and return to defaults without rewriting the card’s firmware. A custom VBIOS can expose different power or voltage policies, but flashing is persistent, model-specific and capable of leaving a card unbootable if the image, tool or procedure is wrong.
There is no universal FPS advantage for a modified VBIOS. Any gain depends on the exact GPU, silicon quality, cooling, workload, driver and whether the original firmware is actually limiting performance. The practical path is to establish a stock baseline, tune in small reversible steps, and consider firmware work only for an official update or a clearly understood, card-specific limitation.

What changes when you overclock in software or replace the VBIOS?
Software overclocking changes operating targets at runtime. A utility such as MSI Afterburner writes settings that the graphics driver and firmware accept while the operating system is running. You can normally apply, save, switch and reset those settings without altering the ROM on the card.

The VBIOS (video BIOS) is the card’s low-level firmware. It contains initialization data and performance policy, including tables and limits used for clocks, voltage, power, boost behavior, fan control and protection. Replacing it can therefore change what the driver sliders are allowed to request. It does not automatically create better silicon: it mainly changes the boundaries and rules around the same GPU.

The important distinction is not “low risk versus high risk” in the abstract. It is whether the change is reversible, whether the limits match the board’s design, and whether you have a verified recovery plan.
Which option is safer?
Why software tuning is easier to undo
MSI documents controls for GPU and memory clocks, voltage, power and temperature limits, along with Apply, Reset and profile-saving functions. If a setting causes a crash, you can reboot, load a stock profile or press Reset. A driver timeout can be inconvenient, but it normally does not erase the firmware that initializes the card.
That reversibility does not make every setting safe. Excessive voltage, heat or sustained power can degrade components, destabilize the system or damage the board. MSI’s guidance states: “While overclocking is generally safe, any damage caused during this process is not covered by warranty, so exercise caution.” Keep changes within the card’s electrical and cooling capability rather than treating a slider’s maximum as a recommended target.
Why a VBIOS flash carries a different failure mode
A firmware flash writes the code the card needs before the operating system and driver load. MSI’s update procedure requires the package for the exact product, connected and stable power, no shutdown or restart during the operation, and version verification afterward. An interruption at the wrong moment can leave the card unable to initialize.
Using an image for a similar-looking model is also unsafe. Board layouts, memory types, voltage controllers, display outputs and power stages can differ even within one GPU family. An NVIDIA staff response advises obtaining firmware through the GPU vendor or system integrator and warns that third-party downloads can brick a GPU. “Higher power” is not a substitute for compatibility.
Electrical and thermal limits still govern both methods
A modified firmware can request more power, but the connector, VRM, memory, cooler, fan curve and PCB were not automatically upgraded when the ROM changed. If the workload cannot convert additional power into stable clock speed, the result is simply more heat and noise. If protection mechanisms are defeated, the margin for a fault becomes smaller.

NVIDIA specifically warns that FurMark is designed to maximize power draw “well beyond any real world application or game.” It also warns that using FurMark or other applications to disable protection mechanisms can permanently damage the graphics card and void the manufacturer’s warranty. Treat extreme stress tools as an electrical-risk scenario, not as a routine score-chasing step.
What performance can you realistically expect?
Why there is no honest universal FPS number
Official guidance describes adjustable controls and testing methods, not a controlled, cross-model comparison of custom VBIOS files against software overclocks. A claim such as “a VBIOS mod gives 15% more FPS” is incomplete without the exact RTX model, original and modified VBIOS identifiers, driver, power limit, cooler, game, resolution and stability result.
A higher limit helps only when all of the following are true:
- The stock firmware is the active power or voltage bottleneck.
- The GPU and memory can run faster at the available voltage.
- The cooler can remove the additional heat without triggering thermal throttling.
- The workload scales with GPU frequency rather than being CPU-, memory-capacity- or engine-limited.
- The card remains stable for the complete session, not just a short benchmark run.
If the card already reaches its thermal, voltage or silicon limit under the stock BIOS, replacing the ROM may add no performance. It can instead reduce performance by causing higher temperatures, louder fans or clock oscillation. In some games, a carefully tuned undervolt can deliver better sustained clocks per watt than an aggressive power-limit increase.
Performance per watt matters as much as peak FPS
Compare average frame rate with board power, temperature, fan speed and frame-time consistency. A setting that raises average FPS by a small amount but causes substantially higher power draw or worse 1% lows may be a poor gaming result. Record the same scene, resolution, quality preset and frame-rate cap for every run so that a firmware change is not confused with normal benchmark variation.

Use this sequence before considering a custom ROM. It preserves a known-good path and gives you evidence about what is actually limiting the card.

1. Record a stock baseline
- Reboot and load default GPU settings.
- Open your monitoring overlay and record GPU core clock, memory clock, voltage, temperature, board power, fan speed, average FPS and 1% lows.
- Run a repeatable benchmark or a saved section of the game at the resolution and quality settings you actually use.
- Save a screenshot or log with the driver version and current VBIOS identifier.
MSI explicitly recommends baseline comparison. Without it, a later score cannot show whether a change helped or merely coincided with a different driver, temperature or scene.
2. Apply small clock changes
- In Afterburner, move the GPU core clock in a small increment and click Apply.
- Increase memory clock in incremental steps rather than jumping to a headline number. Memory errors can appear as corruption or silently reduce performance.
- Adjust the power or temperature limit only within the range the card exposes and only after checking temperatures and fan behavior.
- Save a profile after each known-good step. Keep one profile at absolute stock settings.
MSI’s guide describes profile saving, Apply and Reset controls and recommends incremental memory-clock testing. The exact stable value is unique to the card; two cards with the same model number can have different silicon headroom.
3. Use OC Scanner as a starting point, not a guarantee
MSI states that its OC Scanner process takes about 30 minutes or less. An automated curve can provide a conservative starting point, but it does not prove stability in every game, API or temperature condition. Save the resulting profile, then test it manually in the applications you care about.

- Run a benchmark for at least 10 minutes. MSI’s stability guidance uses a 10-minute benchmark as a minimum before game testing.
- Watch for driver resets, visual artifacts, flickering, unusual stutter, lower 1% lows, lockups, black screens or an automatic shutdown.
- Play a demanding section of your normal game for a longer session. Different engines exercise shader, memory and ray-tracing paths differently.
- If instability appears, reduce the last changed clock or voltage setting, press Reset, and retest from the previous stable profile.
A benchmark pass is a checkpoint, not a certificate. Stability means the settings survive the workloads and duration you actually need.
5. Keep a recovery path
- Leave a stock profile saved and know where Afterburner’s Reset control is.
- Do not set the utility to apply an untested profile automatically at Windows startup.
- Keep monitoring visible while testing so a rising temperature or power reading is noticed before a crash.
- If the driver becomes unstable, reboot and remove the overclock before troubleshooting the game or operating system.
When a VBIOS update is defensible
Use the vendor’s official update for the exact product
A firmware update is reasonable when the card manufacturer publishes one for your exact model to fix a documented bug or enable a supported feature. Confirm the full product name, revision, memory configuration and regional variant against the package. “Same GPU” is not enough.
- Download the package from the card vendor or system integrator that supplied the card.
- Read the release notes and confirm that the update applies to your exact board.
- Close games, monitoring tools and other programs that could interfere.
- Connect the system to reliable power; avoid a laptop battery near empty or a desktop power interruption.
- Start the vendor’s updater and do not shut down, restart or interrupt it.
- Reboot only when the updater says it is complete.
- Verify the new VBIOS version in the vendor utility or GPU information tool and test at stock settings first.
MSI’s procedure emphasizes the product-specific package, uninterrupted power and post-flash version verification. These are operational requirements, not optional cautions.

Choose the correct tool by card type
NVIDIA’s guidance says Founders Edition owners should use NVIDIA’s own tool, while partner-board owners should use the partner’s tool. NVIDIA also states that add-in-card manufacturers are responsible for testing, functionality and support of VBIOS updates for their products. A utility intended for one board family should not be treated as a universal flasher.

Third-party ROM collections and “unlocked” images may omit board-specific fan, memory or voltage data. Even if the file boots on another card with the same GPU, it may not match your PCB or memory chips. If the vendor has not published the image for your exact product, the potential gain is speculative while the recovery risk is real.

Yes. A wrong or interrupted flash can prevent the card from initializing, producing no display output even before the operating system loads. Recovery may require an integrated graphics output, a second working GPU, a hardware programmer or professional service; the available method depends on the board and the failure.
Before any nonstandard flash, identify whether the card has a dual-BIOS switch and learn which position is the backup. A dual-BIOS switch is not universal, and it is not permission to flash casually: both positions can be damaged by an incorrect procedure. Save the original ROM if the tool permits it, record the exact device identifiers, and ensure you can boot the system without relying solely on the card being flashed.
If a flash fails, stop repeated power cycling. Disconnect power, return any dual-BIOS switch to the known-good position if the manufacturer’s instructions support that action, and use the vendor’s recovery procedure. Do not write a second unverified image merely because the first attempt failed.
Warranty, support and legal exposure
NVIDIA lists a three-year warranty period for GeForce products, subject to the terms for the region and product. Its exclusions include misuse, negligence, software and other causes that are not manufacturing defects. A firmware modification can make it harder for a service center to establish that a failure was unrelated to the modification.
Software overclocking also has exposure. MSI’s warning says damage caused during overclocking is not covered by warranty. Whether a particular claim is accepted depends on the manufacturer’s written terms, the country, the seller and the evidence of failure; do not assume that a setting being available in a utility means the resulting damage is covered.
Keep the original VBIOS, purchase documentation and a record of the card’s stock configuration. If support is needed, restore the manufacturer-approved firmware only when the vendor’s procedure allows it and never misrepresent a modified card’s history.

How to report a credible VBIOS-versus-software result
If you publish or share your own comparison, make it reproducible. Include:

- Original and modified VBIOS version identifiers.
- Driver version and operating-system version.
- Afterburner core, memory, voltage, power and temperature settings.
- Cooler type, fan profile, room temperature and whether the case was closed.
- Game or benchmark, API, resolution, quality preset and frame-rate cap.
- Average FPS, 1% lows, temperature, board power and fan speed.
- Test duration and whether artifacts, crashes, driver resets or shutdowns occurred.
Report several runs and keep the scene identical. A single high score cannot establish that a VBIOS is faster, and a short pass cannot establish that it is safe for daily use.
Common failure symptoms and corrective actions
Artifacts or flickering
Memory or core clocks are too high, or the voltage-frequency curve is unstable. Press Reset, return to the last stable profile and lower the most recently changed setting. Check whether the artifact appears at stock settings before blaming the firmware.
Driver timeout or black screen during software tuning
Reboot, start with stock settings and remove automatic profile loading. If the problem persists at stock, troubleshoot the driver, cable, display and power delivery separately.
Temperature spikes and loud fans
Reduce power or clock targets, improve case airflow and verify that the cooler and fan curve are working. More voltage is not a fix for a thermal limit.

No display after flashing
Power down and follow the card vendor’s recovery instructions. If a dual-BIOS backup exists, use only the documented switch procedure. A second GPU or integrated graphics may be needed to reflash the affected card; if no supported recovery path exists, professional repair may be safer than further experimentation.
Bottom line
Start with software. A stock baseline, incremental Afterburner adjustments, a 10-minute benchmark, real-game testing and a saved reset profile answer most owners’ performance questions without rewriting firmware. Consider a VBIOS update only when it is official and specific to your exact card. A custom performance ROM can change low-level limits, but it cannot guarantee higher FPS and it adds interruption, compatibility, thermal, recovery and warranty risks that software tuning avoids.
