Custom RTMP Streaming: How to Stream to YouTube

Connect an encoder to YouTube using the correct Stream URL and key, configure video and audio settings, check upload capacity, test the preview, and go live.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream to YouTube with a custom RTMP encoder, open YouTube Studio > Create > Go Live, copy the stream’s Stream URL and stream key into the matching encoder fields, configure a compatible video and audio signal, then send a test feed. Prefer the RTMPS URL shown by the lock control in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview and click Go live there.

What you need before connecting

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; these platform limits can change. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and limits.
  • An encoder that can send RTMP or, preferably, RTMPS, with a codec and output format supported by YouTube.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen video and audio bitrate, plus bandwidth headroom for network variation and other users.

A webcam is optional: it is useful for a camera-facing broadcast, but screen or gameplay streams can use software encoding without one. YouTube describes hardware encoders as an option for higher-production events; the right setup depends on the production, not on RTMP itself. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and streaming tips.

Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
  2. On the Stream tab, create a stream or select one you already set up. To prepare an event for a future time, schedule it from the Manage tab.
  3. Review the stream title, description, visibility, and other details before broadcasting. YouTube can reuse previous settings, including a stream key, so confirm they are correct for this event. The live stream settings guide explains key management and other settings.

Copy the Stream URL and stream key

  1. In the selected stream’s settings in Live Control Room, locate Stream URL and Stream key.
  2. For encrypted ingest, use the lock control beside Stream URL to reveal the RTMPS address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over TLS/SSL; the ordinary RTMP address may be displayed by default. Use the address shown for your stream rather than copying an example URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  3. In your encoder, paste the URL into its server, destination, or ingest URL field, and paste the key into its stream-key field. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream and functions as a credential.

Do not show or publish the key. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder; only a channel owner or manager can reset it. Avoid sharing screenshots that reveal it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure video, audio, and bitrate

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Encoder options vary, so use the closest supported settings and check YouTube’s current encoder settings table before an important broadcast.

Choose an ingest bitrate for the codec and format

The following are YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended encoder-ingest bitrates. These are input settings, not a guarantee that viewers receive the same playback bitrate: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.

Video format AV1 or H.265 minimum / recommended H.264 minimum / recommended
1080p at 60 fps 4 / 12 Mbps 6 / 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 4 / 10 Mbps 5 / 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 2 / 6 Mbps 3 / 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 2 / 6 Mbps 3 / 8 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 8 / 30 Mbps 11 / 42 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 10 / 35 Mbps 14 / 50 Mbps

These figures are YouTube Help’s current listed guidance, checked on 2026-10-03; the page does not state a publication year, and the table can change. Choose the row for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec instead of transferring a recommendation from another format. YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 2160p streams, which are set to normal latency.

Set keyframes and audio

  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps.
  • 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS: AAC is required; YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
  • Advanced video options: YouTube’s recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR it recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit; its HDR guidance calls for 10-bit H.265 over RTMP(S), and does not support AV1 for HDR.

Use these as YouTube’s guidance, not as settings every encoder exposes. Match the chosen codec and output format to both your encoder and the current YouTube table.

Leave upload bandwidth headroom

Measure upload speed rather than relying on a download result. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate. Include audio and any additional feeds in the total; if you send primary and backup feeds, budget for both. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the encoder. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth planning and testing.

Test the feed, then start the broadcast

  1. Set the encoder to the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio format. Start sending the feed to YouTube.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check that picture and sound are present. Test with movement and audio similar to the real show, not only a static screen.
  3. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. For a stream started immediately, starting the encoder sends the feed and creates the watch page.
  4. Check stream health and error messages while live. Verify the result on the channel or watch page, including on a phone if viewers are likely to use one.

Latency is a trade-off: YouTube notes that lower latency can increase viewer buffering. Choose a latency setting appropriate to how much real-time interaction matters, and consider DVR if viewers need to pause or rewind. Set visibility to public, unlisted, or private according to the intended audience. These options are covered in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

End the stream and check its archive

When the broadcast is finished, stop sending content from the encoder and use the relevant end control in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived. Before reusing a previous stream, check its key, metadata, and privacy setting again. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Troubleshoot common RTMP setup problems

Symptom What to check and do
Encoder cannot connect or reaches the wrong endpoint Copy the URL from the current stream in Live Control Room. For secure ingest, confirm you selected the RTMPS address, which begins with rtmps, rather than assuming the default RTMP URL is secure.
SSL error Verify the RTMPS server address from Live Control Room. YouTube says trying port 443 may help if the URL otherwise appears correct; use the actual address for your stream, not a Help-page example.
Connection timeout Check the endpoint and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers connection errors.
No preview appears Confirm the key and URL match the selected stream, verify the encoder is actually sending a signal, and allow time for the preview to appear. For a scheduled stream, wait for that preview before selecting Go live.
Dropped frames or an unstable feed Compare total stream bitrate with measured upload capacity, account for other network use, and restore YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings.
YouTube detects an unexpected resolution YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need manual resolution selection, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in encoder settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Copyright, visibility, and stream content

Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other material in the feed. A technically successful RTMP connection does not establish that content is cleared for streaming. Review YouTube’s policies and your rights before going live; the copyright safety checklist can also help you check common issues. Visibility is a separate choice from connection settings: use public, unlisted, or private to control who can find or view the event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing an encoder approach

Compare approaches by whether they support RTMPS, the codec and resolution you need, whether your production calls for software or dedicated hardware, the complexity of the workflow, and your available upload bandwidth. Software encoding can suit a straightforward screen or gameplay stream; YouTube’s tips name Wirecast as an example. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. These are examples of categories, not a product ranking or hands-on comparison.

For an ordinary live camera, screen, or gameplay feed, use an encoder that sends that live signal to YouTube. For a different use case—keeping uploaded prerecorded videos looping as a YouTube live stream—StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to loop uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream rather than encode a live camera or screen, StreamNeo keeps the stream running in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.

Start your free StreamNeo day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a custom RTMP stream key in more than one encoder?

YouTube’s current Help limits are 3 active streams per stream key. If you need concurrent feeds, check the applicable channel and key limits in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
