Choose Streamlabs Desktop for a guided start and bundled tools
Streamlabs’ onboarding guide lays out a new-user path: grant camera and microphone permissions, choose live streaming or recording, sign in, optionally import OBS Studio settings, choose a theme, add sources such as a camera, microphone, or screen, and add alerts before recording or going live. That can suit creators who would rather start from a guided workflow and Streamlabs’ creator tools than assemble a setup from a more configurable production environment. The guide describes a setup path; it does not prove that every user will find one application easier. Read Streamlabs’ onboarding guide.
Streamlabs says standard alerts, widgets, tipping, themes, and overlays are free, while Ultra is optional. Its feature information identifies multistreaming and premium overlays as Ultra benefits. The reviewed official page does not establish a current Ultra subscription price, so check Streamlabs’ current terms rather than relying on an old price or feature list. What changes if you need multistreaming?
If broadcasting to more than one destination at once is central to your setup, Streamlabs explicitly identifies Multistream as an Ultra feature. Check Streamlabs’ current Ultra information.

Do not treat multistreaming as a reason to assume the rest of your production software is interchangeable. Compare your required scene controls, source handling, alerts, and platform support separately. The official OBS sources reviewed here do not establish a bundled multistream feature, so this comparison cannot make a current feature or price claim for a particular OBS plugin or external service.

Check operating-system support and your actual workload
The OBS Project requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11; macOS 11 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. The page cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its CPU guidance also notes that needs vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Because the requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, verify the current release’s requirements before installing. OBS Project system requirements.
The Streamlabs requirements page lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and later, with 8 GB RAM as a minimum. It recommends 16 GB or more RAM and an SSD, and lists CPU and GPU families in its recommendations. The same page gives “3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms” as an upload-speed guideline. These are figures stated on the page when reviewed, not a guarantee for every workload or destination; its date and metadata are inconsistent, so check the current requirements page before using them to plan a setup. Neither set of minimum requirements establishes which app will run better on your particular computer. Actual load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, content, other software running at the same time, and hardware. Before committing to a setup, test the intended output and scene load on the computer and connection you will use to stream.

Can you move OBS settings into Streamlabs Desktop?
Yes, Streamlabs’ onboarding guide describes an option to import existing OBS Studio settings. Treat it as an available starting point, not a promise that every setting, plugin, or integration will transfer. After importing, review your scenes, sources, audio devices, hotkeys, and any plugin-dependent elements, then make a short test recording or private test stream before a scheduled broadcast. See the Streamlabs setup guide.
A practical decision checklist
- Pick OBS Studio if open-source software, Linux support, extensive customization, plugins, or scripting is a priority.
- Pick Streamlabs Desktop if its guided onboarding and built-in alerts, widgets, themes, and overlays match the way you want to work.
- Check Ultra carefully if multistreaming or premium overlays matter: Streamlabs identifies those as Ultra benefits, and the reviewed source does not establish a current price.
- Check your operating system against the current requirements pages, especially if you use Linux or an older macOS version.
- Test your real production setup at the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity you intend to use; a compatible system is not a performance guarantee.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with uploaded videos, rather than produce a live camera-and-microphone show in desktop software, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud keeps the video looping, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
