Current sensing measures how much electrical current flows through a circuit. It can help a project monitor a battery, detect motor load, log power use or flag an unusual draw. The right project starts with the circuit—not with a generic “current sensor”: AC or DC, current range, bus voltage, accuracy, isolation and controller support all affect the choice.

What can a current-sensing project do?

A current measurement adds information that a voltage reading alone cannot provide: it shows how much current a load is drawing at the point being measured. That can make a project more useful for monitoring, logging or responding to changes in a system.

  • Battery monitor: track current flowing into or out of a battery as part of a monitoring system.
  • Motor-load indicator: observe changes in motor current that may reflect changing load. In motor-control projects, the sensing method must also work with the chosen controller and control platform.
  • Power or energy logger: combine current with voltage measurements to monitor power-related information.
  • Abnormal-draw alert: detect current that differs from the expected operating pattern.
  • Non-invasive AC monitor: measure AC current without inserting a shunt into the conductor, using suitable sensor hardware.

These are project directions rather than guaranteed outcomes: useful readings depend on sensor suitability, placement, wiring and the system being monitored. SparkFun outlines current-sensing uses and categories in its current-sensor overview; ST also describes current-sensing applications and shunt arrangements in its electrical-sensing application overview.

How to measure current with Arduino

For a first low-voltage DC project, a documented sensor breakout is a more approachable starting point than designing an amplifier circuit from scratch. Adafruit’s beginner-level INA260 breakout guide describes high- or low-side DC current, bus-voltage and power measurement over I2C, with Arduino- and CircuitPython-compatible microcontrollers and Raspberry Pi computers.

Ferwooh ACS712 5A Range Current Sensor Module chip ACS712ELC-05B Hall Current Sensor Current Measuring Module with Power Indicator for Arduino (Pack of 3PCS)
  • Name: ACS712 current sensor module, current sensor chip: ACS712ELC-05B.
  • Pin 5V power supply, built-in power indicator.
  • Accuracy range:The module can measure 5A positive and negative current, which corresponds to 185mV/A analog output; IP = 0 A, that is, when no detection current flows, the output voltage is VCC/2.
  • Applications: Laster detection and management in the area of electric motors and over -current error protection in the area of switching power supplies and various electronic products.
  • Reminder:ACS712 is based on the principle of Hall detection, try to avoid the influence of magnetic fields when using it.

A simple project can use that kind of board to observe a known low-voltage DC load. Before connecting anything, check the breakout’s actual voltage and current ratings, the load’s expected draw, the board’s wiring instructions and whether the measurement arrangement suits your circuit. The guide’s stated capabilities do not make the board suitable for every voltage, current or system.

  1. Define the measurement: identify the supply voltage, whether the load uses AC or DC, and the expected current range. Decide whether the measurement needs to be high-side or low-side and whether isolation is required.
  2. Choose a documented board: confirm that its measurement range, bus-voltage rating, interface and supported library fit the microcontroller and circuit. Follow the board maker’s connection instructions rather than inferring pin placement.
  3. Connect a known, low-voltage load: keep the initial demonstration within every component’s ratings. Do not use a mains circuit as a beginner wiring exercise.
  4. Read the sensor over its supported interface: for the INA260 example, the guide describes I2C measurement and compatible platforms. Use the guide’s current instructions for the selected board and software environment.
  5. Check whether the result is plausible: compare readings across a known change in load and verify that the displayed current, voltage and power behave sensibly. Do not treat an unverified reading as a calibration result.

This is a project plan, not a tested wiring diagram or code listing; no particular load, board revision, program or expected numeric reading is established here. The Adafruit guide provides the board-specific setup details.

Which current sensor should I use?

There is no universally best sensing method. A shunt measures current through a small resistance; magnetic approaches sense the field associated with current and may provide a different isolation or wiring arrangement. The right trade-off depends on what is being measured and how the sensor connects to the rest of the system. AKM groups approaches as shunt resistor with isolation amplifier or isolated ADC, cored current sensor and coreless current sensor. SparkFun’s overview also discusses Hall-effect, high-side shunt, coulomb-counter and non-invasive categories.

Approach What it offers Questions to resolve before choosing
Shunt resistor with amplifier or isolated ADC Measures current through a shunt; the measurement chain can include an amplifier or isolated ADC. AKM describes these as a method category in its current-sensor tutorial. What current and bus voltage are involved? Is isolation needed? What accuracy is required, and can the design manage the shunt’s resistance and resulting heat?
Cored or coreless magnetic sensor AKM identifies both cored and coreless current sensors as method categories; magnetic sensing avoids treating every application as a simple inline shunt choice. Does the specific device support AC, DC or both for this use? What are its range, accuracy, isolation characteristics and interface?
Hall-effect sensor A magnetic sensing category included in SparkFun’s current-sensor overview. Check the particular sensor’s current range, AC/DC behavior, voltage and isolation requirements, and output interface.
Non-invasive AC sensor A category in SparkFun’s overview for monitoring AC without inserting a shunt into the measured conductor. Confirm that the sensor is intended for the conductor and AC measurement task, and that its output can be read by the chosen system.
Current-and-voltage breakout such as INA260 Adafruit documents high- or low-side DC current, bus voltage and power measurement over I2C for supported platforms. Verify the board’s actual ratings, the circuit’s DC bus voltage and current, required measurement placement, and software compatibility.

Use the table as a screening tool, not a ranking. AKM’s method tutorial and SparkFun’s category overview frame selection around the measurement and implementation requirements. For circuit examples, Analog Devices’ AN-105 current-sense circuit collection is an application-note reference; Analog Devices cautions that a catalog circuit may not exactly meet a particular design’s needs.

What to check before starting a project

  • AC or DC: establish the current waveform and confirm that the selected sensor is specified for it.
  • Current range: estimate normal and relevant peak current, then check the device’s ratings rather than relying on a generic sensor label.
  • Bus voltage and placement: determine where the measurement sits in the circuit and whether a high-side or low-side arrangement is appropriate.
  • Isolation: identify whether the measurement must be electrically isolated from the controller and verify the isolation characteristics of the complete arrangement.
  • Accuracy and heat: for shunt methods, account for the effect of shunt resistance and heat as well as the desired measurement accuracy.
  • Interface and software: check the controller interface, library availability and supported hardware for the exact platform.
  • Whole-system ratings: check wiring, connectors, power source and load alongside the sensor board. A board’s advertised measurement range is not a safety approval for the assembled system.

Current sensing in motor-control projects

Motor control adds a platform-specific constraint: a sensing method that is suitable electrically may not be supported in the desired configuration by a particular MCU or control library. SimpleFOC documents different inline and low-side current-sensing support across MCU families and notes that support can change with releases.

Before choosing a board for a field-oriented-control project, consult the current SimpleFOC current-sensing documentation for the exact MCU, sensing mode and release, then check that against the hardware design. Do not assume that support on one MCU implies support on another.

How to move from a breakout to circuit design

Once the basic measurement concepts are clear, designing around a current-sense amplifier is a natural next step. Texas Instruments’ Precision Labs current-sense-amplifier series covers fundamentals, design considerations, datasheets, applications and debugging. It is useful for readers who want to understand how amplifier selection and circuit details affect a measurement, rather than only connect a prebuilt sensor board.

Safety: keep beginner projects low voltage

Start with a low-voltage hobby circuit whose supply, load, sensor and wiring are all within their documented ratings. The component and educational references here do not constitute a safety standard, and they do not establish a safe mains-wiring procedure. Mains and other high-energy systems require appropriate equipment, isolation, protection and qualified design; do not adapt a low-voltage breakout tutorial to them by assumption.
