Use Flexbox when items need to flow and align along one axis; use CSS Grid when rows and columns need to work together. The practical distinction is also about control: Flexbox is generally content-out, while Grid lets you define a track structure and place items within it. Most interfaces benefit from using both where each fits.
How do Grid and Flexbox differ?
MDN puts the central distinction plainly: “flexbox was designed for layout in one dimension – either a row or a column. Grid was designed for two-dimensional layout – rows, and columns at the same time.” MDN’s explanation of how Grid relates to other layout methods also describes their different sizing approaches.

| Question | Flexbox | CSS Grid |
|---|---|---|
| How many dimensions does it control? | One axis at a time: a row or a column. | Rows and columns together. |
| What drives sizing? | Content influences the space items take; the layout distributes available space along the axis. | You define tracks for items to occupy, or let automatic placement fill the grid. |
| What happens when items wrap? | Each flex line distributes space independently; items on different lines do not share column alignment. | Items can align within shared row and column tracks. |
| What is the natural layout unit? | A group of items arranged and distributed along one axis. | A structure in which relationships between rows and columns matter. |
These are different layout models, not competing ways to achieve every layout. Flexbox’s content-out behavior is useful when item sizes and content should influence distribution. Grid’s layout-in approach is useful when the track structure should determine where items fit.
When should you choose Flexbox?
Start with Flexbox when the items in a container primarily need to line up along a single axis. It is a natural fit for navigation links, toolbars, and groups of controls, where the main job is to arrange items in a row or column and distribute available space. It can also center content or let children share available width or height.

- Choose a row when items belong side by side, such as controls in a toolbar.
- Choose a column when items should stack and align vertically.
- Use wrapping when items may need to continue onto another line, but do not expect those lines to behave like shared Grid columns.
Flexbox wrapping can look grid-like at first, but it does not create a single two-dimensional track structure. Each line lays out and distributes its items independently. If the second line’s items need to line up under the same columns as the first line, Grid is a better fit.
When should you choose CSS Grid?
Choose Grid when both row and column relationships matter. It is well suited to card collections or page structures where items should align to shared tracks, rather than being distributed independently within each row.

With Grid, define the rows and columns that form the layout and place items in those tracks, or let auto-placement fill the available grid. This makes the two-dimensional structure explicit. It is especially helpful when alignment across rows is part of the design rather than an incidental result of item widths.

Ask whether you are still arranging one group along one axis, or trying to impose relationships across rows and columns. If you find yourself disabling Flexbox’s flexibility to force a shared structure, that is a signal to reconsider Grid. MDN summarizes the warning this way: “If you are using flexbox and find yourself disabling some of the flexibility, you probably need to use CSS grid layout.” MDN’s Grid layout guidance gives the broader context.

- If each item can take space according to its content and the group should flow along one axis, Flexbox remains a sensible choice.
- If items need to line up across multiple rows and columns, use Grid’s shared tracks.
- If only one part of a larger layout has those two-dimensional needs, use Grid there rather than forcing the whole interface into one model.
Can a page use both layout methods?
Yes. Use Grid for the larger structure when rows and columns need shared relationships, then use Flexbox inside a component such as a navigation area or a row of card controls. The reverse is equally possible: a Flexbox arrangement can contain a component whose internal layout is better expressed with Grid. Both methods also support box-alignment features, so the choice can be based on the layout relationship rather than a requirement to use only one system per page. See MDN’s guide to how Flexbox relates to other layout methods.

Compatibility depends on the specific features and the browser versions your project supports. The documentation cited here does not establish current support percentages or a feature-by-feature compatibility table. Check the exact features you plan to use—particularly advanced capabilities such as subgrid—against your project’s browser targets rather than assuming every Grid feature is available everywhere.

A quick decision rule
- Identify the items that share a container.
- If their relationship is mainly along one axis, start with Flexbox.
- If the alignment of rows and columns must be coordinated, start with Grid.
- If different parts of the interface have different needs, combine the methods at those boundaries.
