Then test changes from the main menu or between matches, one setting at a time.
This is not one universal bug with one universal fix. A ValveSoftware report describes crashes triggered while applying settings during a live match, while Intel documented a separate CS:GO DirectX 9 crash involving shadow-quality changes on a specific driver release. The sequence below separates configuration problems from driver-dependent failures without discarding every setting unnecessarily.

What is known about the CS:GO video-settings crash
The most useful distinction is where the crash occurs. A ValveSoftware issue opened on April 25, 2023 (issue #3169, recording CS:GO Build ID 11081546) reports that the game crashed when the player edited and applied video settings during a match. In that report, increasing Model/Texture Detail crashed every time for the reporter, while other changes sometimes crashed the machine. The same setup did not reproduce the problem from the main menu.
That report does not prove that every CS:GO settings crash has the same cause. It does show why changing options during a live round is a poor test: the in-match transition itself may be part of the trigger. Test from a menu or between matches after the game is stable.

There is also driver-specific evidence. Intel’s Graphics Driver 31.0.101.3413 release notes, dated September 1, 2022, list this known issue: “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive* (DX9) may experience a game crash when changing shadow quality settings in game.” If your failure is tied specifically to shadow quality and you use Intel graphics, the driver branch deserves priority in the diagnosis.
Steam Support’s D3D troubleshooting guidance identifies outdated drivers and unsupported video settings as possible causes of D3D failures. It recommends returning to a previously working resolution, updating the driver, and using launch options that rebuild or minimize the game’s video configuration. These actions are recovery tools, not evidence that one setting is unsafe on every computer.
No authoritative source establishes how common this crash is. The April 25, 2023 date, Build ID 11081546, and September 1, 2022 driver date are identifiers and dates, not prevalence measurements.
First, identify the failure pattern
Before resetting anything, write down the exact action that precedes the crash. This takes a minute and prevents you from changing several variables at once.
- Setting: record whether you changed resolution, shadow quality, Model/Texture Detail, or another option.
- Location: note whether you were in the main menu, between rounds, or inside an active match.
- Result: distinguish a game-only crash, a frozen display, or a system-level failure that required a restart.
- Repeatability: note whether the same setting fails every time or only intermittently.
- Graphics path: record whether the game is using Intel graphics or another GPU, and whether the problem began after a driver change.
A repeatable failure with one option points toward a setting or driver interaction. A crash only while applying changes in a match points toward the in-match transition described in the Valve report. A game that will not launch after a bad change needs configuration recovery first; do not keep applying random settings from a broken state.

Recovery sequence: reset the video configuration safely
1. Close CS:GO and remove conflicting launch options
Exit the game completely. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, and select Launch Options. Remove obsolete, experimental, or conflicting entries before trying a recovery option. Steam’s video/display troubleshooting instructions specifically tell users to remove other launch options before using recovery options, because an old flag can override the setting you are trying to test.
Do not combine several recovery flags on the first attempt. A single controlled launch tells you whether the configuration reset worked. Keep a copy of any option you genuinely need, but leave the field empty while isolating this crash unless Steam’s instructions call for a particular flag.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Run -autoconfig for one launch
With the Launch Options field open, enter exactly:
-autoconfig
Start CS:GO once. Steam describes this option as allowing Steam to configure a Valve/Source game with settings suited to the machine. In practical terms, it is the broad reset in this sequence: it can replace a damaged or unsupported video configuration rather than changing only the setting that last failed.
If the game opens, confirm that you can reach the main menu and remain there without a crash. Close the game, return to Properties → Launch Options, and remove -autoconfig. It is a configuration/reset aid, not a permanent tuning switch. Leaving it in place can make later troubleshooting confusing because the game may continue rebuilding settings instead of preserving deliberate changes.
After removing the option, launch normally. Do not immediately restore every preferred quality setting. First establish that the default or conservative configuration survives a normal launch.

3. Use -safe if the game still will not start
If CS:GO continues to fail before you can reach usable video settings, remove any other launch entries and try:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
-safe
Steam’s video/display guidance says this starts a Valve/Source game with minimal video settings in a 640×480 window. Expect an unattractive, small window; that is intentional. The goal is to regain a working display configuration, not to play at that resolution.
Once the menu appears, set a conservative resolution and display mode that previously worked on your system. Apply the change from the menu, close the game normally, remove -safe, and launch again. If the normal launch is stable, increase quality gradually rather than restoring several demanding options together.
4. Consider the DirectX 9 fallback when D3D errors persist
Steam’s D3D troubleshooting guidance says CS:GO users can try:
-dxlevel 90
Use this only after removing unrelated launch options and attempting the configuration recovery above. It is a diagnostic path for a persistent D3D failure, not a guarantee that every crash is fixed. Test whether the game can launch and apply a conservative setting, then continue isolating the specific trigger. Keep your launch-options field tidy so you know which change produced the result.

Restore a known-good resolution and update the graphics driver
Steam recommends reverting to the last resolution that worked. If you remember the previous width, height, and display mode, select those values before testing quality settings. A known-good resolution gives you a stable baseline; changing resolution and quality together makes it impossible to tell which transition caused the failure.
Update the graphics driver through the appropriate GPU vendor’s supported channel, then restart the computer before retesting. Steam specifically lists outdated drivers as a possible source of D3D failures. Record the driver version before and after the update so a later bug report can identify the environment accurately.
Intel graphics: pay attention to shadow quality
If the system uses Intel graphics and the crash occurs when changing shadow quality, compare your installed driver with Intel’s documented issue. The release notes for Graphics Driver 31.0.101.3413, published September 1, 2022, say that CS:GO running through DX9 may crash when shadow quality is changed in game.
This does not establish that every Intel driver has the defect, nor does it show that shadow quality is the cause when another option fails. It does establish a concrete driver-dependent lead: test after moving to a current supported driver branch, and avoid using shadow-quality changes as your first in-match experiment. If the crash disappears after the driver change, preserve the old and new driver numbers in your notes rather than attributing the result to a different setting.
Change settings without recreating the crash
Use the main menu or a safe pause point
The Valve report reproduced the crash during a match but not from the main menu on that setup. Make the main menu your default test location. If you must test while connected to a server, wait between matches or rounds rather than applying changes during an active round. This does not guarantee safety, but it removes the exact condition described in the report.

Change one control at a time
- Start from the known-good resolution and stable launch configuration.
- Change one video control.
- Apply it and wait to see whether the menu remains responsive.
- Close and relaunch if the game behaves normally, then test the next control.
- Write down the first option that reproduces the crash.
For example, test resolution by itself, restore it, then test Model/Texture Detail by itself. If Model/Texture Detail fails repeatedly while resolution does not, you have a much stronger report than “video settings crash.” If only shadow quality fails on Intel graphics, include that exact sequence and the driver version.
Do not treat an intermittent crash as a clean pass
The Valve report says some settings crashed only sometimes. A single successful apply does not clear an option. Repeat a suspect change from the menu after a normal restart, and stop testing that control if it causes another crash. The objective is to identify a stable configuration, not to force a particular quality level.

| Remedy | Recovery scope | Effect on preferred settings | Driver dependence | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
-autoconfig |
Broadly rebuilds Valve/Source video configuration | May replace custom video and performance choices | Can reveal whether the saved configuration is the problem, but does not replace a driver update | First recovery when the game launches poorly or settings appear corrupted |
-safe |
Starts with minimal video settings in a 640×480 window | Requires you to choose a usable resolution again | Reduces the video configuration enough to separate launch problems from normal settings | Game will not start or the display is unusable after a change |
| Known-good resolution | Changes one display variable | Preserves other settings | Still requires a driver check when D3D failures continue | You know which resolution worked before the crash |
| Driver update | Changes the graphics software layer rather than resetting all settings | Usually leaves the game’s choices intact, although a driver change can alter behavior | Directly addresses outdated or vendor-specific driver faults | Crashes persist after configuration recovery, or the failure matches a documented driver issue |
-dxlevel 90 |
Tests the DirectX 9 path identified in Steam’s CS:GO D3D guidance | May alter the rendering path and resulting behavior | Useful when the failure appears to be a D3D compatibility problem | Persistent D3D failure after simpler recovery steps |
The table reflects different scopes, not a ranking. A broad reset has a greater chance of discarding preferred settings; a one-setting test preserves more but may miss a damaged configuration. Use the least destructive step that still answers your question, then move broader only if the failure remains.

What to do when the crash continues
Separate configuration failure from a reproducible bug
After -autoconfig, -safe, a known-good resolution, and a driver check, test the suspected control once from the main menu. If the same setting still crashes, write a compact reproduction: starting configuration, exact control changed, old and new values, menu or match location, GPU, driver version, launch options, and whether the entire machine or only the game failed.
A crash that survives a clean configuration and driver update is less likely to be explained solely by a stale saved setting. That does not identify a new cause, but it gives support or maintainers a useful boundary: the failure remains after the standard reset path.
Preserve crash information
Keep any crash dumps and system information generated by the failure. The Valve issue notes that some attempted reproductions produced empty or failed dumps. Therefore, the absence of a usable dump does not disprove the crash. Report what happened even if the dump is missing, and state whether the failure was repeatable, intermittent, or limited to an in-match apply operation.
Know when to stop testing
Do not continue applying the same setting during a live round after it has caused a crash. Use the main menu, keep one variable under test, and retain the last known-good configuration. If a system-level failure occurs, return to the stable setup before collecting more evidence. The purpose of troubleshooting is a reliable game session and a clear reproduction, not exhaustive experimentation with a configuration that is already unstable.

A practical decision path
- Can you reach the menu? If no, remove launch options and try
-autoconfig. If that fails, use-safe, select a conservative resolution, remove the recovery flag, and retry normally. - Does the game launch but fail on a D3D error? Revert to the last working resolution, update the graphics driver, and consider Steam’s
-dxlevel 90guidance. - Does one setting fail only during a match? Stop changing it in-match. Test from the main menu or between matches, one control at a time.
- Is shadow quality the trigger on Intel graphics? Check the driver branch against Intel’s documented DX9 shadow-quality crash and retest after updating.
- Does the same controlled test still fail? Preserve the reproduction details, dumps if available, and system information for a bug report.
This path avoids two common mistakes: wiping settings when a single control is the problem, and repeatedly changing settings in a live match when the match transition may be part of the failure.
