Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Before investing in a new cryptocurrency, find out what the project does, what the token lets you do, how demand might support its value, who controls the project, and what could stop you from accessing your money. Then check the trading platform and custody arrangement separately from the asset. No checklist can predict a token’s price or certify it as safe; the aim is to identify unsupported claims, practical risks, and reasons to walk away before committing money.
What should you find out first?
Start with the project’s own business plan, white paper, or development plan. Read it to identify claims you can verify—not as proof that the project will deliver. Before you look at price charts or promotional material, write down the answers to these questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- What product, service, or network is being built, and who is meant to use it?
- What does owning this particular token let you do? Does it provide access, voting rights, a claim on something, or no defined right beyond being transferable?
- How will money raised through the offering be used?
- Can a holder redeem or return the token, or only try to resell it? What restrictions apply?
- What would have to happen for the project to work, and which of those conditions are already true?
Separate what the documents promise from what you can independently observe. If basic rights, use of proceeds, or resale conditions are unclear, do not fill the gaps with assumptions.
Is there a real use case and a credible path to token demand?
Ask who needs the product or network, whether it exists yet, and why using it would require this token. A project can have an appealing product concept without creating lasting demand for its token. Look for a specific connection between the product and token use, and test whether that connection depends on future adoption, planned features, or decisions by the project’s promoters.

Consider what could weaken the case: users may not adopt the product, competitors may offer a better option, technology may change, or a competing currency may attract activity. Demand and liquidity can also change. The CFTC identifies these and other factors as relevant to possible cryptocurrency value; it also cautions that buying solely in the hope of reselling at a higher price is speculation. A persuasive forecast is not evidence that the forecast will come true.
How do token economics and project control affect your assessment?
Identify how tokens are issued or distributed, what rights attach to them, and who may benefit from the offering. Find out whether the project’s claims depend on future work by a promoter or affiliated group. The SEC and CFTC materials support investigating these questions, but they do not provide current supply data for a particular token or a universal formula for deciding what it is worth.
Build a simple account of what you can verify: the stated issuance or distribution design, any disclosed holder rights, the parties involved, and the milestones that still depend on future work. Treat missing or difficult-to-check details as unknowns, not favorable assumptions. A token’s price, scarcity language, or promotional description does not by itself establish a source of demand or a claim on the project’s success.

Can you verify the team, disclosures, and technical claims?
Check who is behind the project and which people or entities are affiliated with the offering. Look for information about their roles, interests, and involvement that can be checked beyond promotional posts. Compare public claims with the project documents and with evidence of what has actually been delivered. When important claims come only from anonymous accounts or the project’s own marketing, you have less to verify.
For an ICO or token offering, ask whether the blockchain is open and public, whether relevant code is published, and whether an independent cybersecurity audit exists. If an audit is available, examine its date and scope: which code or systems did it cover, and what was outside its review? An audit’s existence is not proof a project is secure or that its code has not changed since review. The SEC has warned that blockchain can make it relatively easy to create an impressive-looking ICO that may still be a scam.
What does U.S. regulatory information tell you—and what doesn’t it tell you?
In the United States, do not assume that every cryptocurrency is a security, or that a token is “SEC approved.” An SEC educational page dated April 2026 describes how some crypto assets may be offered subject to an investment contract. It outlines the Howey elements as an investment of money in a common enterprise with a reasonable expectation of profits derived from the essential managerial efforts of others. Whether those elements apply depends on the facts and circumstances; a general investor checklist cannot classify a specific token.

The SEC’s older ICO bulletin advises investors to check whether an offering is registered or relies on an exemption, and to use EDGAR where applicable. That is a prompt to investigate, not a conclusion about any particular offering. Legal treatment and agency guidance can change, and the discussion here is limited to the U.S. context; investors elsewhere should consult the relevant official sources for their jurisdiction.
Is the exchange or custodian suitable for this asset?
Assess the platform separately from the cryptocurrency. A token’s project may be distinct from the company or service through which you buy, hold, or transfer it. Check the provider’s background, applicable registration, whether it supports the asset, and its current terms for custody, withdrawals, fees, insurance, lending, and any commingling of customer assets. Verify current status with official records and provider documents; an app-store listing or popularity does not establish that a platform is safe.
The SEC warns that a custodian’s hack, closure, or bankruptcy can prevent customers from accessing assets. CFTC guidance also warns that many spot-market platforms may lack government supervision or important safeguards. Do not assume ordinary crypto exchange balances receive bank deposit insurance or brokerage protections: SEC guidance says those protections do not generally extend to accounts held with crypto asset entities and warns about withdrawal halts, insolvency, and uncertain recovery. If a provider describes a product or balance as “insured,” read the actual terms to understand what is covered, by whom, and under what conditions.

Which custody arrangement matches your ability to manage keys?
A wallet manages private keys that authorize transactions; it does not hold coins in the way a physical wallet holds cash. Your choice affects who controls those keys and what can go wrong:
| Arrangement | Who controls the keys? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custody with a hot wallet | You do | Internet-connected access is convenient, but the keys are more exposed to online threats. |
| Self-custody with a cold wallet | You do | Generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but less convenient; a physical device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. |
| Third-party custody | The provider controls them | You avoid managing the keys directly, but depend on the provider and its custody, withdrawal, and asset-use terms. |
Self-custody makes you responsible for protecting the keys and recovery phrase. Never disclose either. For online accounts, use strong passwords and multifactor authentication. A physical hardware wallet is an optional way to manage keys for self-custody, not an investment assessment: it does not preserve market value or eliminate risk. It may add device cost and physical-loss risks while reducing internet exposure.
Which warning signs mean you should stop?
Pause or walk away if an offer relies on any of these signals:

- Guaranteed high returns or claims that risk is negligible. The CFTC advisory states: “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy.”
- Pressure to act quickly, unsolicited investment offers, confusing jargon in place of clear explanations, or claims promoted only through social media.
- Fake testimonials, impersonation, or account screens that show profits without independent evidence those funds can be withdrawn.
- A demand for extra fees or taxes to release a withdrawal, or an offer to recover money for an upfront payment. Do not send more money to recover or unlock supposed funds.
SEC alerts describe fake sites that display apparent profits or allow a small withdrawal before asking for larger deposits, as well as pump-and-dump promotion, impersonation, and recovery scams. In a historical 2021 alert, the SEC said defendants in the BitConnect scheme allegedly collected approximately 325,000 bitcoin, worth approximately $2 billion at the time. That alleged incident is an example of a past scheme, not a measure of typical losses or current market conditions.
How should you make the final decision?
Before committing money, put your findings in writing. Separate verified facts from project claims and unanswered questions. A practical review can follow this order:
- Define the asset. Record the project’s purpose, the token’s actual rights, use of proceeds, and any redemption or resale limits.
- Test the value thesis. Explain who would use the product, why the token is needed, what could sustain demand, and what competing products or technical changes could weaken that case.
- Check delivery and control. Identify what exists now, what remains promised, who benefits, how tokens are issued or distributed, and whether the key people and technical claims are independently checkable.
- Review the offering and platform. For a U.S. offering, check applicable registration or exemption information where relevant. Separately verify the platform’s current status, asset support, custody, withdrawal conditions, and fees.
- Choose custody deliberately. Decide whether you can safely manage private keys yourself or are willing to rely on a provider, and understand the consequences of either choice.
- Set a loss limit before buying. Crypto assets can be highly volatile or illiquid, and investors may lose access through technical problems or platform failure. The SEC advises that only money an investor can afford to lose entirely should be exposed to speculative crypto asset securities. Avoid leverage unless you understand that it amplifies losses; CFTC materials warn that a customer trading futures on margin may lose more than the initial investment.
If you cannot explain the token’s role, verify the important claims, or accept the possibility of losing the entire amount, do not treat a persuasive pitch or rising price as a substitute for due diligence.
