There is no established way to guarantee profits from bitcoin trading. A more useful goal is to make decisions with a clear view of volatility, total costs, custody responsibilities and tax consequences—and to avoid risking money you cannot afford to lose.
Start with the risk: Bitcoin prices can move sharply
Bitcoin is highly volatile and speculative. A price move can create a loss, and no trading plan can remove that risk. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) also cautions that many cash-market platforms are not regulated or supervised by a government agency. Before trading, understand the product, venue, custody arrangement and what you could lose. The CFTC’s virtual-currency trading advisory explains these risks.

Leverage can magnify losses as well as gains
With a margined futures contract, leverage lets a trader control exposure larger than the funds committed. That magnifies the effect of price changes in either direction; an adverse move can lead to rapid losses. The CFTC’s leverage discussion concerns margined futures—it is not a claim that every spot bitcoin trade is leveraged. If you do not fully understand margin, liquidation conditions and your maximum exposure, avoid using it.

Buying bitcoin directly and buying a spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) are not the same. Direct ownership involves handling or arranging custody of bitcoin; an ETP is a security that seeks to track bitcoin’s price. Neither removes the underlying price risk.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Consideration | Direct bitcoin | Spot bitcoin ETP |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Bitcoin itself | Shares of a product that seeks exposure to bitcoin’s price |
| Custody | You may need to manage private keys yourself or rely on a custodian. | The product handles the underlying bitcoin custody; you hold ETP shares through a securities account. |
| Costs and price behavior | Trading, transfer and network costs may apply. | Sponsor fees may apply, and the share price may differ from bitcoin’s price. |
| Product structure | Bitcoin is held directly, subject to the custody arrangement. | The SEC says spot bitcoin ETPs are exchange-traded commodity trusts, not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940—even if a product is called an “ETF.” |
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) notes that a spot bitcoin ETP can avoid some risks of personally transacting on a crypto platform or handling keys, but it still has risks, including volatility, possible tracking differences, risks involving underlying trading platforms and sponsor fees. Read the product’s disclosures and assess its fees and protections before investing. See the SEC Investor Bulletin on spot bitcoin ETPs, dated September 9, 2024.
Work out the full cost before placing a trade
“Fees” can mean several different charges. Check each cost separately; a low advertised trading fee does not tell you what a deposit, withdrawal or transfer will cost.

- Trading costs: A platform may charge a commission or other transaction cost. Check the current fee schedule and how the platform calculates the charge.
- ETP costs: A spot bitcoin ETP may charge sponsor fees. Review its current disclosures rather than assuming its cost is the same as buying bitcoin directly.
- Bitcoin network fees: An on-chain transfer may require a network fee. Bitcoin.org explains that fees vary with demand for blockchain space and relate to transaction size in bytes, not simply the amount of bitcoin sent. Wallets commonly estimate the fee and may let you review it before broadcasting a transaction. See the Bitcoin.org FAQ.
Transaction costs can also matter for tax calculations. The IRS identifies potential digital-asset costs such as transaction and “gas” fees, transfer taxes and commissions. See its digital-asset FAQs.
Match custody to your ability to protect access
Direct bitcoin ownership can mean responsibility for private keys: whoever controls the necessary keys can control access to the associated bitcoin. Losing access or exposing key material can put funds at risk. Decide whether you understand the wallet and recovery process before moving bitcoin into self-custody.

A hardware wallet is one physical option for people who choose self-custody, but it is not necessary for every trading approach and does not reduce bitcoin’s price volatility or improve returns. An ETP can avoid some personal key-handling responsibilities, but shifts the arrangement to a product with its own fees, disclosures and risks.
Keep records and check the tax rules where you live
Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction. For U.S. federal income tax, the IRS treats digital assets as property, so general property transaction principles apply. A sale for U.S. dollars generally requires recognition of capital gain or loss based on adjusted basis and amount realized, with relevant transaction costs addressed in IRS guidance. The FAQs added December 15, 2025 generally address transactions completed on or after January 1, 2025.

Keep records sufficient to support your tax position, including receipts, sales, exchanges, dispositions or transfers and fair market values. Save transaction statements and cost information as activity occurs, rather than trying to reconstruct them later. The IRS’s digital-asset FAQs describe U.S. federal treatment; they are not a substitute for advice about your circumstances. If you live elsewhere, check the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.

Promises of high returns with little or no risk are a warning sign, not evidence of a dependable trading strategy. Be cautious of guaranteed-profit claims, unsolicited investment pitches and pressure to act immediately. The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert identifies promises of high returns with little or no risk as a classic fraud warning sign.
