There is no universally best place to keep crypto. The key question is who controls the private keys that authorize transactions: with a self-custody wallet, you do; with an exchange or other custodian, the provider does. Self-custody gives you direct control but makes you responsible for protecting and backing up your keys. Custody can make trading and account access easier, but your ability to use the assets depends on the provider and its withdrawal terms.
What is the difference between a crypto wallet and an exchange?
A crypto wallet does not hold coins like a physical wallet holds cash. It stores or manages the private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets on a blockchain. A private key authorizes transactions; a public key can be shared to receive assets but does not authorize spending. Many wallets use a seed phrase as a recovery method. Anyone who obtains that phrase may gain access, while losing it or the key can leave you unable to recover assets.

An exchange may provide a custodial wallet service. If you leave crypto in an exchange account, the exchange—not you—controls access to the private keys. “Hot” and “cold” describe internet connection, not key ownership: either self-custody or third-party custody can use hot or cold storage. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 investor bulletin explains these distinctions.
Wallet vs. exchange: the practical trade-offs
| Decision | Self-custody wallet | Exchange or other custodian |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access? | You control the private keys and must manage them. | The custodian controls access to the private keys. |
| Your main responsibility | Secure your device, keys, and seed phrase, and maintain a workable recovery plan. | Choose and monitor the provider, secure your account, and understand custody and withdrawal terms. |
| What can go wrong? | Lost, stolen, damaged, exposed, or compromised keys or devices can cause permanent loss. | A hack, shutdown, bankruptcy, suspended withdrawals, or misuse of deposited assets can disrupt or prevent access. |
| Convenience | Hot wallets can be convenient for transactions; cold wallets are generally less convenient. Setup and maintenance may require technical ability. | Account-based access may be simpler for trading and may allow password resets, but access depends on the provider. |
| Online and physical risks | Hot wallets connect to the internet and face cyberthreats. Cold wallets are generally less exposed online but can be lost or damaged. | The custodian may use hot, cold, or combined storage. Ask how it safeguards assets and keys. |
| Costs | Physical cold-wallet devices typically cost money; wallet transactions may also involve fees. | Check account, transaction, transfer, setup, and closure fees. |
| Recovery and recourse | Lost keys or seed phrases may be impossible to recover. | Recovery and legal treatment depend on the provider, customer terms, jurisdiction, asset, and circumstances. Do not assume withdrawal or reimbursement is guaranteed. |
These are custody trade-offs, not a guarantee against crypto price volatility, scams, malware, mistakes, or loss. Connecticut Department of Banking consumer guidance also describes the convenience and security trade-offs between digital wallets and physical devices.

Should you keep crypto on an exchange or in a wallet?
An exchange may suit frequent trading
If you trade often or value straightforward account access, keeping a working balance with a custodian may be convenient. That choice accepts provider risk; it does not guarantee access or recovery. Before depositing, review the provider, withdrawal rules, security practices, supported assets, and fees.
Self-custody may suit people prepared to manage keys
If direct control matters to you and you can reliably secure and back up keys, self-custody is an option. Be prepared to set up the wallet, protect the seed phrase, plan for device loss, and avoid irreversible errors. Moving assets out of an exchange does not automatically make them safer if you cannot preserve the recovery information.

Choose hot or cold storage based on how you use it
A hot wallet is connected to the internet and is generally convenient for transactions, with greater online exposure. A cold wallet is typically offline and generally less convenient, while adding physical-loss or damage risks. The SEC describes a cold wallet as typically a physical device not connected to the internet; that does not make it risk-free.

A mixed approach is possible
Some people may choose to keep a balance for everyday activity with a custodian or hot wallet and hold other assets in cold self-custody. This is one possible way to balance convenience and control, not a regulator-endorsed allocation or a universal recommendation.

What to check before choosing an exchange or custodian
The SEC recommends researching a provider’s background and regulatory status, supported assets, storage methods, and who can access keys. Ask whether it uses hot, cold, or outsourced storage and whether it lends or commingles customer assets. Review privacy practices and all account, transaction, transfer, setup, and closure fees. Find out what happens if the custodian fails, and read the conditions and limits of any claimed insurance.
- Secure the account with a strong password and multi-factor authentication.
- Be alert to phishing attempts that seek account credentials or recovery information.
- Read the withdrawal terms, including any limits or conditions that could affect access.
The CFTC’s virtual-currency trading advisory cautions that many internet-based virtual-currency cash markets may not be regulated or supervised and can involve gaps in safeguards, cyber risks, scams, and limited recourse after theft. This does not mean every exchange has the same status or protections.

Do crypto accounts have bank or investment protections?
Do not assume that assets in a crypto account receive bank deposit insurance or SIPC protection. The SEC’s discussion of protections for certain registered securities intermediaries applies to specific securities-law contexts and entities; it is not a blanket legal conclusion about every crypto asset, custodian, account, or jurisdiction. SEC guidance on holding securities also notes that a crypto intermediary may control the keys and that withdrawals can be suspended or recovery in insolvency uncertain. The SEC alert on crypto-asset securities describes protections and risks in its particular securities context.
